My second Billy Strings show this Sunday at the Greek Theater. To say I’m impressed would be a wildly inaccurate understatement. I had heard almost none of his music prior to walking in and did my best to approach the shows with an open willing and present mind. By half way into set one first night I realized any expectations I could have held would all be being completely slayed this weekend a...

Thank you! I really enjoyed your comment, and that you recognize that Billy is a savant or something. I am so glad you went both nights! Last October he came to KC and I too was blown away by this young man just coming into his prime. I had gone solo, but just knew my wife would love it. I just had to share this with her so we flew to Baltimore and I walked her in blind. She absolutely loved it. I always waited for bands to come around to me and never chased a band around the country. However, Billy shows are so good and his catalogue is so vast. The more you learn about and listen to Billy the better it gets! So Berkeley made a dozen shows for me and ten for the wife. Next up is Indianapolis...

Is that Van MO’s “And it stoned me” from 7:00 to … a lot later … 14:30? I am forever fascinated by the compulsive happy chromatic runs while the nooodling of Jerry treads that fine line between losing the plot and inspiring melodies you have never ever conceived of in your entire life. Goof genius! And Brent’s supportive B3 keyboard accompaniment is so much brotherly teamwork. Listening at its highest level on stage.

Aw such a great recommendation. Several others have asked me to start doing this. It is a tremendous amount of work culling the selections from the GD vault and piecing together along with all the visuals, archival footage and original animation as it is. But I will seriously consider starting to do time stamps with song and show the selections are from. FYI so far volumes 1-30 with only a few exceptions throughout have all been culled from the 1995-1990 tours. I’m going to start working through the 80s, 70s and 60s backwards as the volumes continue on. It’s a profound and joyful labor of love for me and keeps me in a perpetual state of awe at the depth of the GD and Jerry Bands live catalog. Thank you so much for stopping in me sharing your feedback. I hope it did wonderful things for your head!

I once was hired by Jill Lesh to paint a mural on their two boys shower wall of tropical fish in an aquarium-esque setting. It was 1992, and the boys were very young. Phil spent a considerable time talking to me while I worked. I found him to be very intelligent and grounded in reality. Incredibly talented, I’d like to see him stretch out and play music that nobody’s ever heard before. His improvised soloing in the many shows I’ve experienced from the late ‘60’s until 1993, was the high point of their presentation imho. He’s a national treasure, and capable of so much more than rehashing old tunes over and over again. Alas, it’s the audience that steers the boat in situations such as these. I’m grateful to have been a part of the cultural phenomenon that these fellas helped to move forward, and will always respect Phil for the awesome human being he is. I’d cherish a chance to add my improvisational percussion to his incredibly diverse sonic offerings. I owe my fearless approach to playing music without easy categorization to players like PL. 👁️💕🎼☮️

Incredible story. Thank you for taking the time to share that with us man. What an excellent memory for you. I’ve interacted with Phil a handful of times over the years in much more limited timeframes and contexts than you. I only ever experienced a gentleman, a truly formidable intellectual and a very hip, generous, grounded easy going dude with a lightning quick wit who laughed easily and heartily. An inspiring father and husband by virtue of his open, proud dedication and love for his family. And then there is his creative genius and power. In my mind, Phil was every bit as musically innovative and essential as Garcia to the what made the GD the mythical legends they became. Together, chasing each other around blind corners and through wormholes and quasars, they grew wings and opened a portal to the transcendent Phil is a galactic wizard of the highest psychedelic order who looks like a soccer dad who worked for IBM in the 80s and drove a minivan to drop the kids at practice after school. Don’t let the looks fool you people. For just underneath the surface lurks the soul of a god of rock n roll thunder come to steal your mortal face! Long may he run!!

@@novakaya Thanks for noticing my brother! I have more from my convo with him: I asked several questions; Firstly, how he felt about playing Uncle Jon’s Band 9,684 times as an example of the obvious monotony that can and does occur in situations such as this. He replied; we’ve lost the passion that once excited us, and now it’s just a business enterprise. I was surprised by this, but understood, as I dislike playing cover tunes that have been heard countless times. When I asked why don’t you just quit? He indicated there were too many families that depended on them for their existence. Then I asked him; will the Dead continue to play as a group once JG has transitioned, as this was when Jerry had lost a lot of weight and was quitting cigarettes, and I noticed he did not look well as he passed by me back stage at the Oakland Coliseum. Phil stated the Dead was Jerry’s band, and once he was gone, they all were going to take a break, but would eventually pursue their own projects, as is evidenced by Rat Dog, Billy and the Kids, Planet Drum, and Phil’s current projects. He then indicated he didn’t want to talk about music anymore, and when he said the family was headed to Grand Cayman, I was able to share my experience of traveling in the Caribbean, and what I enjoyed about that island in particular. I felt he was weary of being placed in the demigod category, and I just said; to me you are an incredibly talented man with a very important job, that has touched countless lives in ways that will always be well remembered. This made him smile and he thanked me for my work as well. That concluded our time together. In retrospect: I really feel fortunate to have been born mid 20th century, and conscious as all the incredibly intense and culturally significant events that shaped human history of that important era unfolded. I’m so grateful that I was gifted with a degree of self awareness and intellectual curiosity which sadly, seems for the most part, absent in many of the youth of today. May all your roads be easy, and well illuminated my friend! Your perspective, honesty and tenderness are nearly unrivalled these days in the echo chamber of deadheads. The rehashing of the re-re hashed of the re- re-re hashed songs has got to go. The greedy dead audiences eat it up like stale Doritos - but many of us know that the massive potential of where the sounds could have gone, should have gone but ultimately didn't is something only a few of us will regret. Stay fearless, stay unknown and never stop searching and reaching.

@@littermonks Your words like cool rain on a hot afternoon, fall softly on the sun drenched fields of my fond remembrance. Of a time when authenticity was more easily recognized and accessed. Your perceptions of the motivations that fuel my gratitude for the precious gifts I share gladly, are most welcomed. I’ve been informed by the “they of whom we do not speak”, that my mission on this tiny speck in the vastness of space, is to learn and to teach, but more importantly, to share the love bestowed so majestically by The One whose brilliance illuminates my / our every move. This One inhabits everything that ever was, is, and is to come, and doesn’t call attention to itself, but exists beyond any preconceived boundaries and differences mere human minds can entertain. In my younger days, I was called a great drummer by my peers, and as a result, I used to be one who’s guilty of the; Lookit me! See what I can do! mentality with regards to drumming. That is until I met a seven year old who effortlessly made my 37 years of playing and practice look absolutely amateurish. This event was the beginning of my ego death, and apprehension of truth beyond opinion. I learned very late in life that the secret to happiness isn’t in being the best, smartest, or most successful at any of the pursuits I’ve engaged in, but to treat others BETTER than I want to be treated. This takes the “do unto others” admonition beyond the somewhat limiting scope of the big black book, to a place that transcends the egoic motivations most people top out at. It pleases me that you recognize the dangers of musical mediocrity, and the also-ranism of the easily fallen into ruts of linear thinking. Today, my astonishment regarding the increasingly inhospitable climate of the mass psychosis pervading most levels of social interaction, has made me realize that there are some among us, whose willful refusal to benefit from the sharing of reason or common sense, are the ones who will be left behind during the great awakening that looms large on the horizon. Unable to recognize the failure of saviors both real and imagined, puts them in a perilous state that threatens the stability of any who accept and entertain their madness. Sorrow and regret for things I said and did in my selfish past have made me acutely aware of the power of mind and thought, and now nearing my seventh decade, I stay focused on being at peace, and most importantly, filled with compassion and acceptance. I used to complain I had no shoes, Until I met a man who had no feet, is a platitude of gratitude I often share when I witness someone upset about trivial inconveniences. Life here is a precious gift, and to whom much is given, much is required. May any who read these words become richly adorned with the realization that; Mita Kuye Oyasin or We Are All Related, as our indigenous elders have stated, Is in reality; We Are All The Same Person….
