Omg this is exactly what I wanted. I watched historia civilis and know about infantry and cavalry. But recently I watch king and general Russian war in Ukraine. And I have no idea what this symbol means.
nice video please make one on Transportation❤🎉
There are more motion of equations on other platforms like stanag4355, but all of them are confusing and old so can I model a modified point mass trajectory model with matlab by entering these equations on the video ?
Was it changed recently that Battle Drill 1 was switched to "React to Contact" and not "Platoon Attack"?
Excellent summary and visual aids. I've always been curious about the hierarchy of unit echelons. Thank you for taking the time to make this.
Can you do one that goes into more complicated symbols and combinations? Thanks.
Cool to see Jav teams. Didn’t have those in our Weapons Squad. Just 240s and 249s
Former navy here, thanks for educational vid! Found it it interesting and added to my vast sea of useless military knowledge!
all this is nice if you have a full compliment of people. My first platoon had 8 people in it counting myself.
Sounds like some Vietnam era bullshit. Companies with 60-70 dudes, etc, less than a modern plussed up Ranger reinforced platoon/strike force with all its attachments.
So, my understanding is that: 1) SMGs, shotguns, and handguns issued to the platoon, if they are ever depicted, are simply depicted like rifle counterparts (i.e. an M590 is the same symbol as the M24). 2) Combination guns (i.e. underbarrel grenade launchers/shotguns) are depicted differently from standalone systems (i.e. the M79). 3) The MK48 is still classed as a medium and not light machine gun and the symbol does not change even if the doctrinal role changes. I hope I have those correct, but if anyone could confirm that, it would be much appreciated.
As someone that likes to play tactical wargames, this is really useful! 😊
This was very helpful. Thank you! You explained this in a way that made it very easy to understand.
nice video ! as far as my understanding, OAKOC is usually used to evaluate positions where my force is going to be, like Observation Post. Can OAKOC be used to analyze and report about the enemy location?
@@KoreanArcherNoh Yes you can analyze terrain anywhere and should analyze the aspects of terrain (OAKOC) from both the friendly and enemy perspectives. You should use you terrain analysis to help determine where to locate things like an OP rather than select the location first and then analyze the terrain around it.
@@militaryartandscience thx for the reply. let s say im at the OP and there is a target building. Analyzing features around&surrounding that building is also called OAKOC?
Thank you
You have very good lectures and presentations. We the viewers request that you allow other colleges to access and use your presentations to extract some relevant knowledge. Thank you Dr. Cook.
Planning for withdraw under fire ????
how do i get my corpsman to heal casualties?
Thank you Doctor.
I’m a brand new pv2 at my unit and I’m gonna be an FO for a 2 week training mission in Macedonia this video really helped me thanks
If you're a 13F I think your AIT probably had better training than this. But I'm guessing maybe you're not. Keep learning. You'll be E-3 and E-4 before you know it!
@@militaryartandscience I am a 13F, but to say AIT didn’t prepare me at all is an understatement. Stuff like this isn’t taught at all. Even though it’s 10 weeks the amount of stuff they teach you is very basic. I’m actually in the process of getting waivers to e3 and then e4 because I made a deal with my battery commander that if I got my esb they’ll try their best to waiver me and I got it. Thanks for the motivation sir.
I needed this right now
Interesting
There anyway that the battlebook can be shared to a .mil address? Thanks in advance
Are you able to pause the simulation and give commands while it’s paused? When it’s unpaused they then carry out orders?
Yes. In real-time one player mode you can pause and update/change your commands to units. In real-time two player, both players have to agree to the pause. In turn-based modes, well, there is a pause every turn by definition. (It executes for 1 minute and you cannot change anything, then you can make any changes you want between turns, and then the next turn executes.)
Thank you 👀
Glad you found it helpful
Best explanation of MLCOA and MDCOA I've managed to find. Now that ISW have started using these terms in its daily reports on the Russian offensive in Ukraine, I think there are going to be a few people scrambling around for a clear explanation. 🙂
Thanks. Glad you found it useful.
Im not complaining, tbis is a very useful channel it seems but, is this straight up a channel teaching us about war? I just found this channel today and im a little confused even though u seem to teach well I would recommend giving some examples instead of just listening things off
"is this straight up a channel teaching us about war?" Yes. These lectures are part of a course at West Point so the focus is on modern warfare. Examples come up in class, but good comment. (I'd also note that this particular video is a bit a small side excursion, so it's not very in depth. The main focus of the course is on situation analysis and tactics for execution.)
@@militaryartandscience thank you keep your videos up there pretty good, soon sun zu would be proud
Sir. Does it possible to get these ppts? thank you four help
Awesome do you have a vedio on oders?
Great stuff! Extremely helpful
Glad it was helpful!
Hooah. Currently in ILE-AOC.
Are you a 35F in the Army?
Nope. I was a 12A back in the day. But IPB is a pretty important thing for Engineers too. So called "Engineer Prep of the Battlefield" is just a specific application of IPB, and Engineer Recon is a part of good IPB. (Oh, and BEAT NAVY!)
Thank you
You are welcome! Glad you found it helpful!

Would be good for Engine 5 of the Combat Mission Games.
Chuck?
I've been out of the Army since 2014. Thank you for my refresher course on the fundamentals of being an infantrymen. I shall continue to spread badassitry.
This game is awesome How can I download it
This Pro version can be licensed through Matrix Games. But there are commercial versions available from Battlefront's website or in Steam. Combat Mission: Shock Force 2 and Combat Mission: Black Sea are two of the modern titles, but there are many other historical settings ones also. (Not an official endorsement, just factual information about where it is available.)
@@militaryartandscience Did the Combat Mission: Cold War count it as well? and have you heard in before?
Is there anyway you would be willing to send me your slide decks for these classes? I will be deployed soon and would love to have these to teach off of for my Scout Platoon. Love your products, and I believe they are things enlisted should know as well as officers.
Send me an email from your .mil and let me know specifically what you're looking for or need help with. Gordon dot Cooke at West Point dot edu

Where do we get "further discussion" of topics presented in MS200?
It's more of an art...
Mr. Cooke do u know/have any others courses like yours avaible for everyone? Im really intrested in it and i want to expand my knowledge in this area. Greetings from Poland!
Moreover im doing engineering logistics degree so i really would like to see more of this stuff!
Good job 👍
would it be possible to make a video about How to Make a Graphical Terrain Overlay?
Whether you call it a Graphical Terrain Overlay (GTO), a Graphical Terrain Analysis Overlay (GTAO), or a Graphical Depiction of Terrain (GDOT) they are all essentially synonyms. The doctrine of occasionally updates to change the term and maybe the specific required elements listed in doctrine change slightly, but they are basically the same thing (and people aren't always up the very latest doctrine. A Modified Combined Obstacle Overlay (MCOO) is very similar and serves the same purpose, but I'd argue it is a different thing, in the the MCOO is typically more detailed and focuses on the obstacles and restrictions (existing and planned minefields, streams, a more detailed terrain/slope analysis, etc). MCOO is typically prepared by higher staffs by specialist Engineers or Intelligence staff. GTO/GTAO/GDOT are typically prepared at small unit level by the leaders making the plan.
@@militaryartandscience How to make Modified Combined Obstacle Overlay? Is there some videos or books available?
Excelente Mr cook
Sir Tnx for the video, can we use blue color to draw this overlay?
If you're using color, blue indicates friendly (units, tasks, etc). Black for generic things like the AO boundaries. Green for terrain and red for enemy (enemy isn't on the SoM overlay)
plastic overlays seem to be somewhat outdated, considering the digital abilities these days
Paper maps and hand drawn overlays don't stop working if the batteries run out. They are also faster to create and much lighter to carry around. 🤷♂️
beautiful
Thanks. Unfortunately the Louvre turned them down (jk)
I would wish to see combat and formal estimates at a company level. Thank you for your presentations.
Maybe someday I'll get to it. But it's not too different. Company level and below follows the Troop Leading Procedures as the process, so it's the same as platoon planning- except the size of units. Battalion and above, when there is a staff, is where things change significantly- following the Military Decision Making Process instead of TLP.
Will sharpie markers work for this as well?
Sure. Brand doesn't matter. Needs to be very fine or "sharp" tip though to be precise in your drawing. Standard Sharpies are very thick for this kind of work. Important thing is that they are permanent or water-proof markers so they don't wash off with water. Rubbing alcohol will take the permanent marker off overlays to reuse them. Back in the day we used to use grease pencils, aka china markers, for this kind of work. Doesn't wash off in the rain or from moisture but can be erased when you want to.
Question Seven in Combat Estimates.
