While out on the water for a charter with one our Whale University classes we found the T34s and T37s in Cattle Pass off San Juan Island. It was our first time meeting new calf T34A2! We followed them up San Juan Channel towards Friday Harbor in beautiful conditions (especially for November!).

มุมมอง 22K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
We’ve been lucky enough over the last few days to see Southern Resident killer whale L90 Ballena and her newborn calf L128 from the shores of San Juan Island. Mom has been actively foraging and calf has looked very spunky. Here are a few video clips of the duo 🥰
Killer Whales in the San Juan Islands: A Week with the T18s and T49As
มุมมอง 1K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
In early September, eight members of the T18 and T49A matrilines spent a lot of time traversing the San Juan Islands in Washington State. We were lucky enough to have a series of incredible encounters with them, both on shore and from the water. These two orca families always seem to have a great time when they're together. Here's a highlight compilation of some of our favorite moments with them.
Northern Resident Killer Whales ~ August 2024
มุมมอง 1.2K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
After two weeks off the north end of Vancouver Island we are back home in the Salish Sea but with lots of data and media to process from 17 total encounters with Northern Resident killer whales. We spent most of our time with members of A1 and A5 Pods, specifically the A23s, A25s, A34s, and A50s. Here's a "first take" video from Jason with some highlights from our time with them!
Belugas in Hudson Bay (June 2024)
มุมมอง 4045 หลายเดือนก่อน
And now for something completely different: we recently took a vacation up to meet the belugas of western Hudson Bay. The ice, the water, the whales - it was all too beautiful not to share here!

In what has felt a bit like a portal to the past, we have had visits from the entire Southern Resident community to the inland waters this spring. Here are Jason's video highlights from a series of memorable encounters in May and June!

Sea lion hunt with the T18s, T30Bs, and T117Bs (Feb 2024)
มุมมอง 2K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
We headed out to search for whales with our friends at Maya’s Legacy. Thanks to a tip from the ferries, we found the T18s in Swanson Channel. Soon, they made an abrupt direction change and led us straight to more whales: the T30Bs and T117Bs who were engaged with a Steller sea lion. It was an acrobatic and memorable hunt!
T99s Harbor Porpoise Hunt - February 7, 2024
มุมมอง 3.7K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
We caught up with the T99s in San Juan Channel on the afternoon of February 7th and saw a little bit of everything: resting, traveling, socializing, and a short but epic harbor porpoise hunt! Please note while the video does not contain blood and gore it does contain footage of the porpoise being rammed by the whales.

Feeding Eagles off Northern Vancouver Island
Most excellent. Everything I wanted to know in one video. I've read a lot, watched a ton of videos and had questions. This is such a great interview.
You all together make a really great Job, thank you for the wonderful Videos, 😊❤
IMO : We are close to see a remaking of all Social groups and social species. With the amount of data collected in the last 15 years from all that is available to read most conclusions is the following: Orcas are either at the same level of Cognition or close enough to make them the next species to evolve with this "socialisation" like us.
Fantastic video!!!
I apologize to everyone who responded to my comment. I've been experiencing some issues with my app, which caused my comment to be deleted. Thank you for your replies. From what I've read, Esperanza is believed to be around 69 years old, and as you mentioned, she could even be older since her year of birth is only an estimate. Orca lifespan remains a mystery since they haven't been observed enough time to draw definite conclusions. Researchers like you are still working to determine their longevity. The most researched orcas are the Resident and Bigg's orcas found in the Pacific Northwest, but studies on them only started in the 1970s. There are around ten distinct orca ecotypes worldwide, and some of these ecotypes may have longer or shorter lifespans.
That male orca's fin looks like a submarine tower resurfacing, such a tall and huge fin!
Strider is so dope!
The T123s are awesome. 💗 I hope you do T046B Raksha and her daughters!
By the look of his dorsan fin, I would assume Loki was a female. Good to know males can gave that curved dorsan fin too. The God os mischief "mischiefed" me. 🤣
The fin of the male is formed by the age of 18-22 years. Loki is only 12.
He's still young, so his fin will continue to grow! He's about to become what we call a "sprouter" male, where through their teenage years their fin "sprouts" and grows up to its final height of 4-5' tall and also gets its more triangular shape.
T123C- Why did they name her "Lucky?"
Because she was in utero when T123 live stranded! You can read about this situation (and what each of them are named after) on our new page about this matriline: www.orcabehaviorinstitute.org/meet-the-matrilines/t123s

So beautiful and graceful
Oh, so precious and beautiful! We must find a way to protect them and preserve their environment. ❤ Thank you for the lovely video. ❤
She us so sweet with her baby
Chills, just chills. Beautiful footage as usual
Wonderful news. Bless her that she lives a long happy life filled with salmon and births many healthy calf’s.
I was going to adopt an orca for my community with the whale museum, and I had given my community a shortlist to vote from during the month of september, and Ballena was one of the options (because she was on my museum ticket when I visited in July.) It's safe to say the vote may have swayed drastically in the last week :)
So fantastic! A newborn!
❤
I am so over the moon with this new birth...may God keep them safe
beautiful girl!!

Amazing footage. Who is the male orca near the end of the video? His dorsal fin is huge.
The one with the kelp? That's T19C Spouter - he is huge!
Jason, your art continuously evolves to a new level of work worthy of National Geographic. Your editing is flawless, as is lighting, scoring- and the subject matter sure doesn't hurt! Keep going!
