Did you know that North Dakota has a Pyramid? Ever since I first drove past this place for the first time years ago, I've been fascinated by it. The Stanley R. Mickelsen Safeguard Complex, built during the Cold War in 1975, cost $6 billion (about $34 billion today). The complex provided launch and control for 30 Spartan missiles and 16 short-range Sprint missiles. The site became fully operational on October 1, 1975, only for the House of Representatives to vote to decommission the project the very next day. The complex was deactivated just six months after reaching full operational capacity.
