Making A Fake Sh!tty Cash Grab Game in 12 Hours
Happy Holidays Everyone! Another year, another Christmas devlog (although I'm cutting it a little close). Recently I've been bombarded with ads for those dodgy mobile games, and I finally caved and got one. To no one's surprise, the game was nothing like the way it was advertised, and it left me in a sour mood - a mood that can only be fixed by making a new Unity game. I challenged myself to build one of those cheap cash grab games (without the ads) in under 12 hours, just to show how easy they are to actually make.

Should Elden Ring Be Nominated for GOTY Again?
มุมมอง 594หลายเดือนก่อน
The nominees for 2024's Game of the Year awards have finally been announced. But is it truly the game awards if there isn't some controversy? Arguably the biggest debate of the nominees is the inclusion of Shadow of the Erdtree; a DLC for Elden Ring. Being the first DLC in the history of the awards to be nominated for Game of the Year, everyone seems to have a different opinion on whether it sh...

2024 has been a crazy year! I started the year with about 30 subscribers, and I've grown to almost 600 in less than a year - something I never thought would happen. And it's this rapid growth which has got be thinking about the future. I want 2025 to be even better than this year, but for that to happen, I need to start planning what I want the next year to look like. I've done a lot of thinkin...
Quick And Easy Pickup & Drop System In Unity
มุมมอง 1652 หลายเดือนก่อน
Games will often task players with managing a variety of items, so it's important to have a smooth and reliable system when developing these features. One of the easiest ways of designing such a system, is a physics based pick up and drop system. Building off my previous tutorial, this video will go over how to expand on the interaction system to create a simple and versatile way to pickup and ...

But to make things more interesting, the two of us decided to turn this into a friendly competition. Even though we’re mates, I’m not going to be holding back. Can You Make A Game With Only ONE COLOUR?

That sounds awesome, I’m a computer science(software engineering) student. I plan to work as a web dev and then career shift to game dev. I’ve made simple games but nothing with unity yet. Just stuff with PyGame but my web dev skills is pretty good.
That's awesome! I started with PyGame too. Sounds like you've got a great plan, and I'm sure you'll have lots of fun with game dev!
fire vid brodie
Appreciate that, glad you enjoyed it!
this is actually really good, i thought you had like over 10k for half the video until i checked
I really appreciate that! Gonna aim for 1k to start, but hopefully 10k one day haha
A very entertaining video, thank you! A sub and like from me, hope to see more.
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the video!

Man Title is hillarious !
Nice video! This style of game is awesome as a starter project into game dev now that I think about it (despite the bad image I have of them for their predatory behavior).
Thanks so much! I didn't think of that either, but I definitely agree these games are great starter projects for new devs because of their simple premise!
Gahaha- god. Thanks for doing this! We need more people doing stuff like this out of spite.
Glad you enjoyed! Who knows, I might have to spite more games like this? Haha
So how much cash did you grab?
No cash, but I maintained my dignity - so an overall profit if you ask me!
TH-cam needs to push this video!!!
Thanks so much, I appreciate the support!
May the algorithm bless your channel 🙏 great video!
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
It's great that you're starting as a programmer. I am inherently a designer. I run a lot of homemade TTRPG campaigns and am constantly designing scenarios, dungeons, levels, monsters, items, and abilities. I generally get very positive feedback on my design. But, trying to make video games is very daunting as my coding experience is lacking so much more.
I feel a lot of people wish they started somewhere else. I would've enjoyed starting as an artist, so I could have a nice art style that I've already honed. There's no right or wrong starting point, and one isn't necessary easier than the other. Just keep chipping away each day and you'll be amazed how far you get. Best of luck with your game dev journey!
Nice !! I’m about to start my gamedev journey and I’m also a programmer. I’m a bit lost , excited and anxious haha. Right now I’m studying a bit of pixel art, since I guess design will be the hardest part
Best of luck with your future game dev journey! For me, it's just constant progress every day, even if it's small. It could be trying to design a new mechanic or just doodling some concept art. Take your time and enjoy the process, game dev is a lot of fun!
@ thank you !!!
2:32 one is a full game the other is DLC. Your argument is mute
That's fair, I see where you're coming from. From my perspective, they both deliver very rewarding gameplay for the players, both in their own ways, so it's not as much of an issue for me. I guess something I didn't touch on as much was player progression, which is definitely lacking in Shadow of the Erdtree. Out of curiosity, in your opinion, would it be a fair nomination if Shadow of the Erdtree was released as its own separate game with a better character progression?
I don't have a hill to die on in this, but the "full" game thing implies the dlc is not "full", even if it does have the amount of content a "full game". One thing I find a bit tricky is the comparison between sote and totk. Totk reused a lot of the same assets and even just used a lot of the same map as botw, but just expanded on it. Sote obviously still uses a lot of the same assets, but built a whole new map too. I could compare further but at the end of the day, Sote and botw featured about the same amount of "new" content, the only difference is the way they are packaged. So if sote was just packaged as a "full game" it would be qualified? Why?
That's totally fair, I'm just curious where people are drawing the line on games that can qualify - everyone seems to have a different opinion on it. My thought is that if SOTE has all the content for a typical game, then it should be able to compete. If big DLC like this aren't allowed, it's just going to force companies to stop making DLC and make exclusively new games, probably with higher prices, which could be good or bad. That's just my thought anyway. You bring up a good point on TOTK. I actually wanted to go in more depth about that game in the video too, but didn't want to make it too long. Another game that isn't "completely new" but almost took out GOTY. I don't think it's the Game Awards without some drama, but I'm curious to see who will win. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts!
I mean it was easily the best game I played all year.
Yeah, I know a lot of people who share the opinion too. Will be really interesting to see who wins this year!
Destiny 2 fans probably feel the same about The Final Shape expansion but its still a DLC. DLC will always be DLC, something added, not created from the ground up. Its easier to catter to people when the foundation is already there. DLC should have its own category. SotE is not a new game so it shouldnt had been nominated. Just my 2 cents
Definitely agree with you on that, there should be a separate DLC category at the awards. I think it's important to note that not all DLC are made equal - DLC like SOTE are quite different to the small little side quest you get from some other DLC. What SOTE delivered was quite astounding for a DLC and it could've been it's own game. That's why I'm leaning on the side of allowing it for GOTY. Something I didn't go into detail in the video is sequels. What about games like Spiderman 2 or TOTK? They aren't created from the ground up, they're built on their predecessors - reusing assets and gameplay. But they're both valid nominations. Yes, they did add new gameplay mechanics, and maybe that's where you draw the line, that SOTE didn't anything mechanically ground-breaking to the game. It's a difficult position we ended up in, but I can't wait to see who wins. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts!
yes, it should be allowed to compete.
should be a dlc category though
Yeah, I agree! I'm surprised they don't already have a separate category for DLC already
Fantastic to hear your plan for next year. I'll be subscribing to see this in action.
I really appreciate it! Can't wait to get started!
As someone who's just starting out as an indie developer, I was so happy to come across this video and see someone with plans so similar to mine for 2025. It feels like I’ve found a great way to stay motivated and keep track of my own goals. I can’t wait to watch a video next year where you look back and share how much you’ve achieved-I'll definitely be comparing it to my own journey
Thanks so much - definitely gonna be fun looking back in a year's time. Best of luck on your game dev journey too!

I’ve always found Interfaces to be so confusing - but I always use the IPointerClickHandler to do event system overrides, and it was actually from using that that i was like: hmm; implement universal method but can always control the output depending on the scriptand it finally started to make sense. great tutorial - super easy to follow, time to see how i can get this in my game next ;)
Good!
Love your video’s ❤ very informative and clear
Thanks so much, that means a lot!
I liked studying during covid, simply because the entire class ended up joining our Discord. Pre-covid, if you made a Discord for the class, you'd get maybe 4-5 people on it - but this time it was the entire class, since it was the only way for us to possibly communicate amongst ourselves and ask each other for the answers. As a result, instead of there being a bunch of different cliques, everybody knew everybody, and it was much easier to socialise. It was also easier to find people to play Minecraft with, and the closest thing we had to a clique was 4 people playing Minecraft while another 4 play Halo. It actually turned out to be the most social life anybody in that class ever had lol, from that standpoint it was amazing while it lasted.
That's totally fair, our Discord server didn't quite go the same way - although to be fair, ours was set up by our lecturer. Most people were just spending time with their own group, and didn't really branch out that much. I only really got to know people during the first half of my final year where it was more social and we could talk face to face. But I'm glad that worked out for you, sounds like a lot of fun!

Amazing video Mr Blue Cap!
I am subbed!
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the video!
Wow I knew this guy in school
Hey! First of all, great video, you just got a new subscriber lol. I had a few questions for you because im a prospective game dev student and since you've already taken it I thought you'd maybe be able to give me some insight. I've been doing game development on my own as a hobby for about a year and a half and have released my own semi-succesful steam game and am working on my next one. Since I already have the majority of the game development basics down, do you think it'd be worth my time (and money, college is not cheap 😂) to do game dev in college? If not then I think i would probably just do regular computer science as an alternative to dive deeper into the coding side of it. Thanks in advance for the help and if you're curious you can see my game on my TH-cam channel! Edit: just realized it might be confusing since I also recently released a game jam game, the steam game is called Cryptis and the game jam one is Blood Shot 😅
Thanks so much, that means a lot! And Cryptis looks really good for your first release! As for advice, I think it really depends on where you want to take things. Whether you want to stay solo indie, or go work for someone else full time (and that's not to say you can't do both). If you're thinking about the full time route, University/College could be a good option. From my experience, uni was great at teaching methodologies and principles that you'd use day to day - things like agile development, scrums, user stories/points. It was also great to be able to get long chunks of time to make larger games with other people. That collaboration was quite valuable, and you quickly pick up how to deal with creative differences and stuff like that. And you say you've got the basics down which is great, but I will say that I thought I had all the basics covered too and I quickly found out I was wrong haha. It can also be a great starting point to build a network in the industry and meet potential employers. If you're thinking you want to stick with making your own projects, University/College might not be the best fit. You've already made a game which a lot of people struggle to complete, which is an awesome start. If you're viewing game dev as more of a hobby and just wanting to make your own projects, then you probably won't get as much out of a full time degree. I know there are quite a few places that offer shorter 1 year courses that focus purely on game development - that might be a better fit for you depending on your goals. But remember, this is just advice, so please don't base any decisions on my word alone haha. There are a lot more factors that play into it, but I hope that's shed some light on the different approaches you could take. If you have any other specific questions, feel free to ask. And no matter which path you choose, I wish you the best of luck with your game dev journey!
@@MrBluecapDev Thank you so much for the response! I do hopefully want to go full time in game dev someday because I really love it, and learning how to work on a team would definitely be helpful for me too. And again, great video and best of luck on your future games!
Very good video!

Hey, I commented at the last video. Thank you for uploading this video, I have been finding it difficult for me to explain how i will get a job after applying for a game development degree.

Thanks so much! Yeah, it would've been really cool to see Project Angel on App/Play Store - just gonna need to come up with another idea to publish instead!
G'Day Everyone! Based on the popularity of this video, I've just released part 2 of my GAME DEVELOPEMENT JOURNEY - going over life after graduating from university. You can check it out here: th-cam.com/video/pk8sUenCytE/w-d-xo.html
I honestly didn't mind online learning during COVID at all.
Yeah, there were definitely pros and cons. Being able to skip the 2 hour commute was a huge plus, but I really missed working face to face with people (since I find it much easier to learn that way), and I was starting to get sick of being trapped in my room haha
I also want to pursue this degree but i just nedd to know if it is worth the wait
I've got a new video coming out soon that goes over what happened after I graduated, including getting my first games job. Hopefully that will provide some clarity, and you can ask other questions in the comments if you have any!
@@MrBluecapDev I am aspiring to be a game devloper. I will be waiting for this video as it can also decide my whole career. :)
I honestly was surprised that someone newer to game dev could make such amazing games. Project Angel looked beautiful and honestly I found it to look really fun and enjoyable. Whenever I would play a single player game, I would something like this one. While Fury of the Pharaohs looked like a fun, yet silly game I would play with friends. I already know they were a blast to make. Also congrats getting through that first year, it must've really hurt not doing what you wanted.
Thanks so much! It was incredibly stressful making those games, but it was a lot of fun. The reward of watching people enjoy those games was definitely worth all the blood, sweat, and tears!
This channel is so underrated
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the video!
I humbly accept my defeat Mr. Bluecap, and yes… me being sick was definitely my downfall… imagine if i wasn’t… All seriousness, a banger video and was an absolute pleasure to face off. I can’t wait for part 2
Thanks Garnet, very happy to go up 1-0 early on against you. I'm sure this will be the first of many face offs!
So you go studying GAME DEV at University to waste a lot of time and you also have to pay for it. That's sound smart.
I can't believe you said "movement cannons" and then said "a bit like the bubbles in Celeste" instead of the barrel cannons in Donkey Kong Country 💀
This is a amazing video, I have been in school for 2 years now and I am going to start my final year and then my masters in game dev soon and man I needed this. My school is good, and ive learnt a lot but I feel in the back of my head that it might not be worth it and that all my time and effort was wasted when I should of done something practical like computer science. This made me feel good. makes me feel like I can get passed this burnout doom and gloom phase I am in. I would love to hear how after university has been because I feel thats were most people have the most worries for. But really thank you for making this video and helping me realize that maybe im not wasting my college years
Thanks so much for the kind praise! I'm actually working on a follow up video that focuses on what happened to me after university and what it was like getting my first job - so be sure to keep an eye out for that :)
Just don't evaporate, lol. I feel like I see new devs start making vids, then get burnt out and disappear.
I'll do my best! It's all about balance, and I'm working on finding a way to keep making videos without running myself into the ground. Gonna be a little up/down until I find my rhythm though, but hopefully I find a pace that suits me soon!
