World's Lightest Solar Bike Camper (14.5 kg)
The ZolarCoffin (yes, it looks like a coffin...) is - as far as I know - the world's lightest bike camper (or sleeping pod) weighing just 14.5 kg with the 160 Wp semi-flexibel solar panel and approx. 12.5 kg without it.
It is only 67cm wide but fits a comfortable mattress of 180x60x7cm. There is also a bit more headroom in front of the mattress.
Having only one wheel helps to keep the weight down and to avoid pot holes (as the camper wheel follows the bike wheels). It also reduces rolling resistance - especially if riding on narrow country lanes where a normal two-wheeled trailer might have both trailer wheels driving through the grass.

    I like the structure you created. It seems very functional. I also used the MPT-7210A charge controller (as you did in one of your earlier videos) and tried the Elejoy controller twice, but neither worked. Then I switched to Genasun. It's a bit pricey and has its limitations, but boy... it’s incredibly light and works like a charm. My trips tend to be rough (wading through bushes, narrow paths, deep mud, etc.), so unfortunately, this camper wouldn't work for me, no matter how much I’d like it. I’ve subscribed, and I’m really curious to see how your camper performs in real-life conditions. Keep it up!

    • @ZolarEnergynet
      @ZolarEnergynet 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, thanks for the comment. Yes, I know of the Genasun. It's probably the best out there if price does not matter. I would not recommend the MPT-7210A. Two unit died on me. Possibly because the vibrations destroyed the fan and then it overheated. Strange that the Elejoy did not work for you. Have you double checked that it is the correct variety? I think there is both a boost and and a buck version available. For the first one the panel mppt voltage should be lower compared to the battery min voltage (fully discharged). For the latter the mppt panel voltage should be higher than the max voltage of the battery (fully charged). They look identical and just have different labels.

    • @SolarTrails
      @SolarTrails 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ZolarEnergynet I definitely needed the boost version Elejoy since my battery is 52V and my panel is 24V. It simply didn't work, so I returned it and requested a replacement, but the new one didn't work either. Both might have been defective, but I'm not sure. Eventually, I decided to bite the bullet and buy a Genasun. I agree, the MPT-7210A is not a good choice. It has a bug: whenever the light intensity changes significantly, it resets itself and slowly ramps up the output from zero. This results in very inefficient charging when moving through changing lighting conditions.

      Both have pro and cons. Tent of course is lighter and more compact. But you need more time to put it up and disassemble it. Also legally the trailer is a bit of grey area in regions where wild camping is not officially allowed. Or at the very least its not as intrusive as pitching up a tent and you can also much more quickly move on in the rare case that somebody (e.g. forester) tells you to do so. Additionally, it gives me an extra boost through the solar panel and I don't have to handle a wet tent in case it is raining.

    the small bamboo frame is a good way to have a flat roof that supports solar. Can hang things up on it is cool too. coroplast builds use domed roofs for this reason. Coroplast tension floor is great idea. An angled design that allows sitting up would be much higher utility. Extremely well done on the weight.

      The 1l rice cooker takes approx. 100 Wh to cook a meal (sufficient for 2 persons or one eating a lot). The battery is 500 Wh so cooking takes 1/5th of the energy available. The other 4/5 can be used for the motor. When going on a day trip with the camper during sunny summer weather the solar can produce approx. 1000 Wh, so preparing cooking will just be 10% of the solar energy produced.

    Maybe for heavier panels, most of the weight is supported by the bottom, resting on the ground. And you could use a weathervane effect for rotation in the wind. The support frame is curved at the bottom so it can rotate in place. The top hangs from two points near the center, so it can rotate with the wind - but still return to the desired orientation later.

  • @IsaacKuo
    @IsaacKuo 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    What a nice design! Maybe you could add one or two more horizontal panels - one as a cover to the basket, and another one below eye level. These would sometimes be shaded, of course, but often they would receive sunlight. You can also purposefully lean to one side in order to reduce the amount of shading. The point of vertically stacked panels is that you can increase panel area without increasing overall dimensions.

    Why don't you use transparent plastic for your rain guard? Then you can see the road directly in front.

    • @ZolarEnergynet
      @ZolarEnergynet 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, in principle you can use transparent PVC for better visibility. I had still some brown one as leftover and therefore used it. One thing to consider is that black plastic will have longer durability under UV exposure compared to transparent ones (the added carbon in the plastic absorbs the UV and protects the plastic). The next ZolarBoda version will also have the front x (cross members) and therefore also the rain cover lowered slightly which should improve the visibility further.

  • @1337user
    @1337user 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This is a really cool setup! How much more range does the panel give? If it's parked outside how long does it take the panel to fully charge the battery? Tbh, i have some safety concerns with those crossmembers right in front of the handlebars. You may want to look into small boats that have a center console for a different suport structure setup. Sinilarly the phone front and center like that is concerning as it may distract the rider and also block tjeir view. Also, in the event of a suddent stop the rain protection looks like it will clothes line the rider right in the neck 😬

    • @ZolarEnergynet
      @ZolarEnergynet 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you. Solar range depends on where you are, where you have parked the bike, where you are riding it (e.g. in the open or under trees) and on the weather of course. You can find a graph with estimates on my website (zolarenergy.net/?p=3). In Berlin when parked in a sunny spot it will give you 5 (winter) to 45 km (summer) daily. In Mombasa 50 km throughout the year. In the sun it takes around 4 h to charge a 500 Wh battery. I don't think the front crossmembers are such a safety issue. Already had an accident with the previous ZolarBoda model (that you can also find on my channel) where I was basically thrown against those and through the front. But only got some bruises. If it is a concern those crossmember could also have additional foam cushion around them. For safety the most import thing is to have rounded corners where possible, my very first solar bikes (also on this channel) still had sharp corners as many other diy solar bikes have, and to make sure that the screws are pointed correctly and are as short as possible (if necessary with added plastic cover). Yeah, the clothlining around the neck could be a potential issue with the rain cover. Therefore, you want to include some predetermined breaking points, e.g. buttons or strings for the attachment that are weaker than your neck. The position of phone actually increases safety when you navigate with your phone. It is low enough to not block your view but higher than on your handlebars. So if you check where you have to go you only have to shift your view slightly downwards and you can better keep track of the traffic vs completely looking down to a phone mounted on the handlebar. Its very similar to heads-up displays of cars in this regard.
