When you state 'mayonnaise" do you mean mayonnaise or Miracle Whip?..
I grew up in the '50's during a depression. Bacon wasn't always the "gourmet treat" it now is. Like corned beef, bacon was the fatty, very tough side & belly meat considered not good enough to serve to a more well-to-do table. Less "well-endowed" families would preserve these meats by brining & pickling or smoking... leading to what are now considered expensive & exotic tastes. Sausage was the same, and, I've made many sausage sandwiches. I still recall the supreme treat of canned cakes & loaves, and enjoyed cooked canned whole chicken. I make what I call a "trailer-trash" BBQ-day for my kids & grandkids. I get large weiners, slip open, stuff with peanut butter (crunchy) and wrap with bacon, tooth-pick together then BBQ. On the plate are Old Dutch potato chips or potato salad (kids prefer chips) and for desert... real deep-fried cake donuts dusted in sugar & cinnamon. Everyone used to say "OMG how gross Dad".. until they did the taste test, then couldn't get enough. Now 'trailer-trash' weekend is a looked-forward-to event. I also took my Mom's recipe from the '50's, and made "pizza" buns. Sounds gross, Klick/Spam, Miracle Whip, green relish, and fine chopped peppers & onion, plus Velveeta processed cheese (NO to any other brand of plastic cheese), all chopped up fine & mixed into a spread, then spread on whatever bun she could afford, freeze & bring out when we kids were 'starving'.. Broiled...and they actually were nirvana, demanding you eat not just one or two. One of our favored sandwiches was butter & brown sugar with cinnamon. Or "buttered" bread & corn syrup, although butter & real milk quickly became a distant memory. I was always tasked with mixing the "flavor-bud" into the margarine (effectively yellow dye into hardened vegetable oil), and mixing the milk powder into a semblance of milk, and put into milk jugs. Until I worked in a meat-processing plant, I like bologna, a lot. I never tasted good bread until I went out of town to visit a relative and was served mixed-grain "coarse" or "peasants'" bread, home-baked. My best buddy's Dad owned & operated a "commercial bakery" which we frequented often. My family bought 50 loaves per order, & froze them. Always white, and $0.10/loaf. It was always a purchase that strained the food budget. I cannot count the number of times I had tongue as dinner or in a sandwich. That and "Blood Sausage", often fried to replace bacon or ham for breakfast. Breakfast was most often Puffed Rice or Puffed Wheat, powdered milk & brown sugar, which was cheaper than white sugar. As a dinner "treat" we'd periodically have "sweetbreads", mashed potato n canned veggie , pork breakfast sausage cooked in a sort-of "dumpling" base. Turnips mashed with potato was delicious and cheaper that pure potato. RE: tongue... I truly enjoyed it...UNTIL my mom bought a whole tongue because it was cheaper. She boiled it up, but I had to peel it. A cow's tongue is pretty big, and the membrane on the tongue is actually very thick. Worse, every shape of every "sensor' on the tongue is exactly the same as on the internal meat of the tongue. It displays the exact immage of the tongue surface, which made it impossible for me to enjoy what I always had enjoyed. That's the same, once I learned the make-up of blood sausage, which I also loved, especially fried. I loved deviled ham. EGG? I loved every egg sandwich. Fried, boiled, blah blah... Egg salad?.. I insist on at least some chopped green olive with celery, onion, half mayo & half Miracle whip, and a touch of Dijon mustard, sprinkle with lots of paprika. And NO, nothing beats Eggs Benedict with a great Hollandaise-top-broiled butter browning & no less than 50% runny yolk on a great Muffin. I'll close by saying, I've worked as a fruit & veggie-picker, a meat-processing worker, as a flour & feed-mill worker (millwright), and a field-hand on a ranch. Believe me, you've eaten your fair share of insects, snakes & rodents. I guarantee that... Guaranteed, especially with "organic" foods. So, smile. A lot of those "old" styles of food are less "tainted". Cream cheese & olives was gourmet, as were sweet gherkins. I used to slice it into sandwiches in place of bologna "roast" it with cinnamon & clove with brown sugar for dinner, or fry "Spam" our Canadian version "Klick", long since over-whelmed by the USA Spam. Today's people must understand the difference between being wealthy, and being in survival-mode. Wealthy people can afford a T-Bone steak in a fine dining establishment. I've been there. People needing to live on the edge of poverty, yet needing to stay healthy & whole must use every bit of every source of nutrition available. That includes sweetbreads, blood sausage, tongue, coarse breads, "poor veggies", made into cabbage rolls or pot pies containing kidneys, chopped heart or livers, or corned beef made from the absolute toughest meat available. It includes Shepherd's Pie, Stews, Soups & Chili's & yup, stir-fries with cat, dog, or whatever. Even canned sardines or mackerel, canned whole chicken, canned corned beef (I still like a lot), and well, too bad if you haven't had them... Canned loaf or cakes. I've lived poor, for 17 years, and dog-bone stew & peanut butter on bread kept me going to 21 years old. Things have changed and I'm now 71. But I promise you this... Many, many people are about to learn what pride vs staying whole & healthy honestly means. I strongly suggest that everyone, regardless their current need to do so, researches history's food evolution, & chooses to prepare...or not. For example... Why are so many European land-plots surrounded by stone walls/'fences'...honestly? Why did someone "invent" Pickled Herring.. or Sausages?.. or Cheese?.. or Wine?., Whisky?.. Beer?.. Corned Beef?.. Pickled veggies?.. or Jams?.. Why did people can or smoke foods?.. Do YOU know why?...
Wait, I still eat some of these sandwiches. Am I living in the past?
Many awful choices of photos.
This will be fascinating, except I don’t need 15 minutes of exposition on every sandwich.
I eat most of those sandwiches every month! Even the _"pimmy ento"_ cheese!
Actually it is Peanut butter, bacon and honey...
Probably because it's called Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter. Now it's just called a generic holiday.
Taylor ham sandwiches are the bomb.....ate them almost daily till i moved from n.j. found a product in Kentucky and still make them but the rolls suck down south
Sorry for the slightly long comment! 😊 But I felt it was important to mention. I want to give a little suggestion about this title if you don't mind! 😊 Hope this helps a bit and your video reaches more viewers. I loved your content so I just wanted to help! The title 'These 25 CHEAP Dinners Will Take You BACK to Grandma’s Kitchen' is good, but not SEO friendly. There are some good keywords here like 'cheap dinners', 'grandma’s kitchen', but you can get better results by recharging the keywords. Why is keyword recharging necessary? Because, on TH-cam and Google search, you need to notice that if someone searches for 'affordable dinner ideas' or 'budget-friendly meals', then your video should come in front of them. When you use more specific keywords, it becomes more relevant, and more viewers can see your video. For example, the title could be: "25 Budget-Friendly Dinner Ideas That Will Remind You of Grandma's Cooking"-here the keywords 'budget-friendly', 'dinner ideas', 'grandma's cooking' have been recharged, which will make your video more searchable. What do you think? Will keyword-recharged titles help your videos get more views? 😊
They all sound good to me, made many of them myself, I did take note on the crab casserole and the ham & pineapple casserole, both of those sound excellent.
plum /xmas pudding is not hard to prepair, you can buy it here in NZ at xmas time and you can tradionally boil it or just warm it in the microwave, it is usually served with custard or cream or brandy sauce, we learnt to make it from scratch at school, we never uses suet, you can just sue butter
Give me a liver wurst and onion sandwich all day
Interesting list of casseroles. Thanks for sharing.
don't for the decline of the peanut butter and bacon sandwich may be due to the TV show "Green Acres", after all, who could eat bacon and not think of Arnold Ziffel?
I love cucumber sandwiches .
40 something years ago my brother smoked a brand named "Free". It was made of cocoa leafs. It actually smelled good. He bought them at the 98cent Store
I always thought dandelions were poisonous?
You mean familys on food stamps...I should know...as a kid I would come up with an idea with whatever was available and that usually meant anything slightly liquid and spreadable on white bread or if no bread what ever I could make with a paste of flour and water...and bacon...LMMFAO whats that
Kool is still being made and sells well.
When my father came home from the Pacific after WWII his first rule was "NO SPAM will enter this house!" As for Liverwurst (not worst) or Braunschwieger sandwich is still popular. I like a slice of Liverwurst on rye bread with mayo and a thin slice of onion. With a dill pickle spear or whole on the side and a cold beer I'm surprised that you don't have head cheese sandwiches listed. head cheese was made by boiling the head of a cow or pig and thn grinding the meat, adding it to gelatin and molding into a brick that could be sliced. As a kid it reminded me of floor tile but my grandfather loved it.
Spam and deviled ham are still favorites for me. Deviled ham and Miracle Whip on sourdough, with a bowl of soup and a cup of hot coffee on a cold day. 😋
By now, these brands, which everyone loved, have already cancelled out most of the generations who smoked them.
I don't know why you included most of these sandwiches, most you can still find at any restaurant or make yourself,, a completely silly video.
I miss the bologna Frito and mayo on white bread.
My grandmother was famous for being able to make divinity in south Florida before air conditioning was widely available.
Ok, PB & Bacon, PB & banana, and certainly PB, bacon & banana have been part of my diet for at least 75 years. Fried Spam sandwich with or without cheese, and there is the gooey comfort of a PB & fruit or berry preserve sandwich grilled hot and fast to crispy in lots of butter. For the wife it's still PB & Mayo. For liverwurst sandwich's I demand Miracle Whip & mustard.
???? These are all present forms of breakfast. Should’ve had someone check your bad research
Chick-lil-a os a great place to go for lunch on Sunday after going to morning services at your local church.
Like the occasional video of someone smoking a joint
My mom still makes amazing divinity
Most of these dishes are still around.
Jello salads were horrible!!!
Don't watch this stupid made up bullshit about commonly eaten foods!
I never smoked, but I remember seeing a lot of those brands. In the 60s, there were even cigarette vending machines. One of the brands in there was Pall Mall (or Pell Mell, whatever it was called). When I was in high school in the 70s, the number 1 cigarette among high school kids was Marlboro. I was considered weird for not smoking, but most of those Marlboro smokers are probably dead by now.
Chesterfield, Raleigh and Belair offered coupons to save for prizes. My last brand was Basic Menthol Lights 100's. Smoked Merit Menthols in the 80's and 90's.
We were served tongue sandwiches at school cafeteria that were anything but tender. There was never an option so most kids trashed the meat and ate the bun. I don’t think anyone ever tasted it.
Oh yes ambrosia salad. Grew up with it and we still make it yo this day
I've never heard of Egg Nog Pie! I need to find a recipe!!!
I thought it was contradictory for people to smoke but wearing masks during the pandemic. 😷
Could you use Raleigh coupon to get a lung cancer surgery? Probably not.
Chick Fil A open on Sundays??? Not ever!
I still make chiffon pies. My strawberry is worth the extra effort.
I don't know too many people who had/have sandwiches on Christmas day, but sliders are definitely popular for parties and/or perhaps a Christmas brunch.
Cuke sandwiches are surprisingly delicious
I was going to say I was sure Elvis was a fan of the PB&J/bacon sandwich … but she mentioned it! I always think of bacon as an expensive item these days.
I never heard of the celery dish, but the rest are excellent dishes that I still serve.
I make ambrosia. My secret it to add crushed pineapples and a little bit of its juice for a great flavor. I like to add coconut flakes too.
Peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches. My mother's pregnancy craving for my 55 yr old brother. He was the only one who liked it.
