The Selfish Codependent's Life Abroad
Netherlands
I started my TH-cam channel in 2021 to talk about mental health from my tiny studio in the Netherlands. Now, I create content about my life as an expat, sharing what has helped me stay sane and find my authentic path in a new country. Hoping to support others in their journeys abroad. 💙

What the Dutch REALLY think about expats in the Netherlands?
I just order everything ok flink so that i dont bave to worry about dressing up carry heavy or buy useless items such as cakes and choclates and other junk food like chips and dont have to worry about cold or rain
This is universal for all languages, not just for Dutch. In all countries, do these people exist.
Geweldige video

This is disappointing as my heritage is from the Netherlands, but videos like this turns me away from wanting to visit the country or meet the people.
If you believe such videos of foreigners that came here are a spot-on representation of what life is like, sure, better not go😂
The problem unfortunately is that allmost all foreigners totally exaggerate when they go to a Dutch GP. You are now promoting it as well as 'the solution' while that is precisely the problem. Do you think that Dutch GPs do not know that? But because of all the exaggeration it becomes completely unclear what the real problem is. If you are just honest and tell your complaints you will get much further than making a small Greek drama out of it. A Dutch GP does not see your illness because you hide it yourself with all the theatre and then you find it strange that you are not taken seriously. And there are enough private clinics where you can have various (blood) tests done if you really want that. Yes, you will have to pay for that yourself. Search for "prive kliniek bloedonderzoek" with your favorite search engine. Most tests can be done for less than 250 euros. No reason to go abroad for that.
Lived in netherlands and belgium id rather pay netherlands taxes then belgium taxes belgium taxes were actually insanely high for what we get
Most of your “don’ts” are really no problem at all. Or do not always apply. - No Dutch would be angry with a foreigner if he or she would call the country “Holland” it is common among non Dutch speakers. - You say you live in Eindhoven which is really not a bike city, nothing like for example Amsterdam or Utrecht. Brabant cities like Eindhoven or Tilburg are more car oriented with their infrastructure, people who ride bikes are mostly students, low income people or sport cyclists. If you go for dinner you take the car, or taxi. People also walk a lot, city centers are small. Bike lanes in cities like Eindhoven are quiet and those huge “bakfietsen” are rare. Even here in Amsterdam I often walk on bike lanes or cross them and make bikes stop. Just don’t hesitate and don’t show fear. Of course it is never a good idea standing still in the middle while talking on the phone. - Being late for work is never a good idea, not only in the Netherlands but in all western European countries and US. Matter of fact, if you show up late often, you are more likely to be fired soon in US then in the Netherlands. - If you invite a Dutchman over to your house for lunch or dinner, he or she will be pleased with the invitation and be very happy with an extensive lunch or late dinner. Your house, your customs, they wil adapt to this without a problem, take it as it is and enjoy. No “don’t” at all here. - Coming unannounced, depends on which region it is quite common in the southern part below the rivers and it is called “buurten” you have to know the person a little or be a neighbor. - Klant is koning, it will also depend on what kind of place of course. In a fancy restaurant, you as a customer can get away with a lot. On the other hand in a snackbar you shouldn’t whine too much and just leave if you don’t like it. I guess you get what you pay for. - There are big differences between different families on how they educate their children so be reluctant with generalizations. Oh and Dutch children the happiest in the world? These kind of researches are nonsensical. I'm sure they never asked children themselves, and if they did they would get an answer reflecting that specific moment. They probably did this research by data analysis which is not always the same in real life. Also the outcome seems biased towards certain countries. - Working overtime can be pretty common too, it depends on the sector and company you work for. Refuse too often and they might not renew your contract. - The so called directness… well your mileage may vary and it depends on what. For example, if you visit people for dinner and the food was bad, better not say it or they will never invite you again. Also, don’t tell a woman her hair looks bad or she is not well dressed. Avoid heated discussions because they like to keep it “gezellig”. It is never wrong to be careful especially if you don’t know people all that well.
Shops will sell unsold garbage with a discount sticker on it , it doesn't mean you saved money it just means you saved the company/shop loosing money on 5 items by buying items no person with common sense wanted to buy
at a basic level, all women are the same everywhere. but there are some valid cultural differences. dutch women are not great at expressing their feelings and being emotionally vulnerable, and dutch people don't really like to talk about things that make conflict until it blows up. my wife is dutch and we stress communication in our relationship, so we recognize it and make it a priority to be open in our family. conflict delayed is conflict multiplied.

Niveau video😊
There are two things really off for me but otherwise I'd love to move there: 1. As you said the healthcare - but I can just make a yearly out of pocket appointment in my home country for when I'm visiting family anyway. 2. Housing and rentable property culture - Impossible to find a house unless you have a job there and to have a job there you have to have housing, total catch 22. You are also expected to earn 3x the monthly rent even if you have enough on your account to keep paying for years, nobody cares, why aren't you making 3k+ in your broke ass home country - except if you are from the middle east, then you get a pass and you can do whatever.
Same thing about the weather. It may rain a lot but rarely every day. I used to cycle for 1 hour a day for my job, and maybe I got wet in 2% of the cases.
Your c omment about Dutch helath care is exaggerated a lot. Dutch doctors are sometimes reluctant, because the know umost diseases will pass without traetment, just by taking rest. In many cases there is no need to see a specialist and you waste collective money.
Chicken is not €17 per kg. Likely less than €10 per kg.
Novrmber and december are gloomy months . That is why Sinterklaas and kerstmis make us so happy.
In the states you only have to convince them they will be paid, necessary or not.
this is sooooo real and relatable cuz it is really happening to me now😂and i’m trying to get used to it
Fucking awful really to be replied to in English as a Flemish person who speaks in standard Dutch with a Belgian accent by Dutch people who speak Dutch in an average city as Maastricht. Is it because you don't hear a Dutch accent right away? Speak my fucking language it's yours too and I will refuse to continue in your thick Dutch accent based English
Cycling is ibdeed quite ubiquitous. Although in the winter, they tend not to clean snow from tge cycle lanes.
Is there long waiting list as in Canada? Please let me know
I can understand you as an Afrikaans speaker, and I think it's super cool
I a dutch person we are not going to act like that.
This sounds like a disastrous place to move to from the US. Especially from a smaller Midwestern town.
Also a quick note, you dont say "Hoi" to workers and strangers like it the video. Its informal.

Thank you so much for guiding Eindhoven just plainly. I used to live there for 6 years 1998 - 2004 as an expatriate Japanese at Philips. Noticed Stripe-S where my office was located became residential area but still many buildings are recognizable. You soothed my nostalgic heart gently. Great job done!
@@TakayoshiUmeda thank you so much for watching the video! 💙🙏
Just found this video. The taxes in the Netherlands are a joke in the end, especially the salary on your tax. Just ask my landlord, that rents out 20+ studios. Talking about a gap between poor and rich.
All in one, that is no't country to living ,îs Like our country the different is value moned ,here is euro that salary per/economy ,and in my country it's the same ,just i change country and people =the same problem You have ,and sine people enter in depresion ,anxiety because na have to do,and dutch people is no't really friendly , don't care about migrants ,and friendships All is fake news here, and one thing "You are no't bițch become one in tine" because girls here do prostitution ,sell content in Instagram,s3x alot, minors etc ,that country is dangerous also for everyone, and in redlight still your smartphone, money etc ,and 5th place one of the most happy country from europa 😂fake news ,king rules country i spek with people and Tell me " superficial we are good ,but in truth we gonna go down in hell " 🎉 PEACE
While comparisons between the Netherlands and Bali can be interesting, it’s important to remember the historical ties that deeply connect them. The Netherlands’ prosperity was significantly shaped by Indonesia’s resources and labor during the colonial era, an impact that continues to influence lives today. Understanding this context adds depth to any comparison.
Is the internet fast enough? Is dentistry good, particularly crowns and implants? Is the quality excellent?
Hey uhh the ither side of netherlands speaks Friese

Im just starting my rijles and Im so happy I came across your videos. Its so informative 😍 thank you!
Dutch women are very boring , and 100 percent predictable, you already know the answer she'll say to everything: NO 🤣
As if it matters much. If you text her any sooner, you're "desperate" and will be ghosted anyway 🥲
That is so not true tf
XD
