Although they were from different cultures, my friend Danie van Graan adopted Magek and referred to him as his son.
In 2014 Magek was hunting near Kaapmuiden in South Africa and was ambushed by a leopard after firing shots at an impala. Although he managed to scare the animal off, Magek was seriously injured and later died despite Danie's frantic attempts at resuscitation. Danie was grooming Magek to work at the Emonyeni Lodge. This event broke my friend Danie's heart. He still feels deep sorrow for Magek.
