STALLED PROJECT – CLASSIC 1984 LAND ROVER NINETY SOFT TOP – STEVE EXPLAINS HIMSELF – MAKING A PLAN
In this video, Land Rover Monthly's Steve Miller explains himself - why has his Land Rover 'Defender' Ninety project ground to a halt?
He gives some background on buying the Land Rover all those years ago, the adventures and modifications it's been through so far, and the several distractions that have caused the rebuild to stall at the rolling chassis stage.
We get a look at the current state of affairs - would you save or replace the bulkhead and tub? Either way, there's a lot to do. And you'll see it all here on the Land Rover Monthly TH-cam channel, in more detail in Land Rover Monthly Magazine, on our social media channels and on The LRM Podcast.

Great to have a project as others have said bits are not getting any cheaper , I would get a galvanised bulkhead or you'll be pulling the truck apart in a few years
Do it once, do it right!
The guy with the black hair is as weak as pish, he’s also pretty passive aggressive 😅 cool video though, very interesting.
What he lacks in strength he makes up for in sarcasm
Enjoying the strip down and rebuild if your putting the hardtop on could you do a detailed video on it as there's nothing on TH-cam anywhere apart from quick ones missing adding the bolts , rubber seals etc after putting mine on with my son (both novices ) we found it hard to get the main 4 corner bolts in and the roof to screen as new rubber seals did not help due to the thickness of them so we put longer bolts in to pull it down tight as the normal ones were to short with it then we put the originals in and replaced the ones we used to pull it down , There' loads of fitting a canvas top as I have used your video before I put the hard top with catflap on. Thanks
It's a truck cab, sorry! Thanks for watching though
Looking forward to watching more along with Martins rebuild one thing mentioned " there's nothing left of the original Land rover " Just then how will it become tax and MOT exempt chassis , engine, bulkhead etc changed so a Q reg in my opinion.
Like-for-like replacement parts and modifications fall differently under the guidelines
Subscribed and keen to see how you do this as my 90 needs doing 👍🏻
Thanks for watching and subbing
This is what life is all about. You will get there in the end and then like me, you will retire with 5 or more cars, but the Land rover will always be one of them Just keep going. Chassis and Bulkheads and doors, have really shot up in price since I bought my galvanised chassis in 2014. That is the only worry.
Everyone’s looking forward to seeing the project progress in 2025, no pressure Steve!
Triggers broom springs to mind!
Thanks for watching!
Q: How do you eat an elephant? A: One bite at a time.
New bulkhead and loom. The real question is the colour? Loving the podcast! See you in February!
Thanks for watching, see you then!
Come on Steve, get cracking with that plan! I’d definitely go new on the bulkhead & wire loom.
I personally quite like the look of county body but with galv chassis and galv bulkhead and galv capping. At least whilst the galv looks fresh
I will it's just dropped through the letterbox😀
Merry Christmas chaps! Life without Land Rovers? Shudder at the thought. If I must though, new Land Cruiser. Right, back to resurrecting mothers ‘10 L322 with flat battery related woes.
Merry Christmas! And good luck
Nice job guys. Here in Johannesburg South Africa I renovated my 69 2a shorty. I bought an ex army 2a 109 plus about an extra 10 inches added to the rear chassis by the army for some military reasons as a donar vehicle . Anyway it had 18000miles on and every nut and bolt was original. I had to remove from the donar the front cross member as mine had been butchered in a previous life to accommodate a Nissan 6 cylinder diesel. When I took off the front cross member off the donar vehicle the inside of the chassis was still bright silver metal. How I wish I could have given it too you guys. Good luck.
Why would you not strip and check the diffs.
Because the Land Rover drove perfectly before stripping with no untoward noises (well, no more than usual anyway)
@@landrovermonthly7806 thats cool. Its looking good so far.
Excellent video, just the compliment while I'm having some lunch after fitting a second hand 300tdi engine to my disco. After a bit of a mishap. It does give the magazine a new perspective, hearing and seeing you in real time, after seeing so many pictures over the years of you explaining land rover jobs. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Good luck with your project!
Question , would you remove the VIN off the frame and apply it to the new frame ?
Being military, the old chassis didn't have a stamped-in number. If the old chassis had one, the area it would have been stamped into would have been cut out and kept.
Why didn't yas pressure clean the motor and gearbox before installing it
Time
It would be great if oxford made these models in 1:43 scale
MARTIN and NEIL great to see you fellows since lr owner days
Well said Philip
200k € 🤣🤣🤣 for a car what will rust in some years?! No sorry!
Its like the Birmingham coat of arms . One working and three watching !😂
Haha!
Need to spend a bit more time slinging your bits so they’re level
We did have a proper level bar but it robbed too much height from the crane.
Very interesting to hear the LRM contributors on the podcast, with Alisdair Cusick on the latest one.
Stay tuned for more soon!
I really enjoyed the fact that this was done in the drive and not in a garage with big post lifts, etc. It is inspiring me to get going again on my Series 3 109. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great job. Future topic I would like hear discussed would be chassis option from various manufacturers, and why you chose HD chassis over standard, positives and negatives.
Good idea, we'll do our best to make that happen!
This is a great topic. Replacing chassis in a 74 NADA in US, trying to decide between Richard’s or Marsland but can’t get a good answer as to why one or the other!
I have to say this has been an amazing short series and super helpful for me. I’m only just starting my restoration of my 1969 Series 2a after it being in boxes for the last 7 years. It’s really handy to see how things go back together that way I’m not missing anything 👍😃
Botch job, should of cleaned everything up first
What difference will cleaning it make? 😂
As other comments, axles and engine/box were cleaned later.
Way to go!
Thanks for watching, Scott!
How did you protect the holes you drilled? I assume some sort of spray on galvanised paint? Thanks
Primer and paint, but cold galv spray is best
Next series needs to be Martin behind the camera whilst Steve finishes his Ninety! Enjoyed the video as ever gents, look forward to the next video.
I hope you don't mind waiting a few years...
I have an even better idea. I continue to film, whilst Martin finishes my Land Rover!
I’m going to re chassis my 83 110 , can I ask why you didn’t paint it as I’m in two minds myself?
It was purely a time thing. Definitely worth painting if you can
let me know if you fancy doing another one :() iv got a 1971 series 3 109 sat in my garden needing a maer chassis and bulkhead. haha.
Get stuck into it!
Its caused me no end of annoyance that you didn't even wash the axles off. Terrible
We were against the clock when this was filmed, and didn't want to put the axles on wet. They've since had a blast with the pressure washer!
A brand new chassis deserved to have the engine/gearbox to be degreased and steam cleaned.
It was pressure washed after filming. It's not all that interesting to watch!
Ha yes, we have been rather spoilt by Mark Evans’ “a 4x4 is born”.
@@landrovermonthly7806 Why did you not clan and pain the axils prior to fitting
Time
@@landrovermonthly7806 yes this isn’t Project Binkey 😂
Must admit, my OCD would of at least pressure washed the axles. Any reason you cannot copper grease the bushes as they go in? Great work so far!
The engine, box and axles have since been pressure washed but we were battling the clock to get it rolling. Bushes are an interference fit so anything that adds lubrication should be avoided. Thanks for watching!
Top tip, if you’re using and engine crane on gravel, buy. Couple of sheets of ply or osb to run it on…. Makes the job much easier
Your old chassis looks in remarkably good condition!
It's not as good up close!
@@landrovermonthly7806my 110 chassis was like that Currently fitting a new Maer chassis
Great video.. keep it up👍👍👍 waiting for the next video👍👍👍
Thanks for watching, won't be long!
What a load of old twaddle
Thanks for listening!
That chassis is going cheap/free haha could do with one haha
Old one's already gone, sorry!
@landrovermonthly7806 haha
Don’t mark the lids of the bolt tins, mark the tin itself - that way, if you or your assistant have more than one lid off at the same time it won’t matter if accidentally the lids get switched - just a thought?
Good shout!
brilliant, just shows what can be done at home with a few tools and some good friends. looking forward to the next one
Thanks for watching
Hi great video to watch and it’s helping me
Glad you enjoyed it!
Is this a genuine V8? Asking because of the recessed front panel.
No, it has been converted with a 101 Forward Control engine
@@landrovermonthly7806 Thanks for the quick Response. You mentioned this some minutes later in the vid, too, so sorry for the redundend question. I meanwhile had a closer look on the MAER site. Are there some additional brackets for the V8 engine in the Series 3 Chassis welded to? The background of my interest deals with one of my pending Projects, which is a 1967 Serie 2a Petrol Pick-up 109, which I like a little bit more than the Series 3, because of the inner head-lights. The chassis is rotten. Buying a new one from Marsland or Richards would be very expensive, die to toll, tax and freight. The 2a is a civilian one, but I contemplate to go for a 1 Ton/ mil Chassis with extended springhangers ( Like my 109 S3 ex-mod FFR LHD (200TDi) has.
The adaption for the engine is done with very old Milner Phillips conversion brackets, so there are no changes to the engine mounts on the chassis, they remain the standard mounts for the 2.25 four-cylinder. No modifications to the chassis are required
Very interesting, looks like Neil’s SWB series is going for the bare metal look!
I took (most of) the paint off ready to repaint it. Haven't found time to get it done yet!
This was most enjoyable to watch 😃 I love the detail, I respect how much time it took to film & edit it, incredible work 👏 Look forward to future episodes!
Thanks for watching!
Great to watch. All the best jobs are done round the back of the house, usually in the pouring rain, umbrella at the ready. Keep up the good word, already looking forward to watching the next installment. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
