Great info, thanks you.
that cat has a thing for me LOL
If she could talk, she would tell you what you are doing wrong. She loves your vids and @westerntruckandtractorrepa1353
I have worked on marine diesels since the late 80's, mostly MAN, Cat, Cummins, a few Komatsu. We have one customer with Cat mains in a push boat that has 3-71 gensets. The guy that did any 2 stroke work left, the work is scheduled, and they want me to do it. I have no issue with that BUT they want an in frame done in four or five days. That is the part I do not like. We have a rebuilt head, injectors and oil cooler from Detroit, and three kits from Interstate McBee. I'm freinds with the guy that was supposed to do the work and he says he will walk me through it. The only part I am hesitant about is fitting the liners. It is an NA 3-71 and my bud says on the low HP stuff "if it fits run it" on the higher HP stuff like the high HP turboed stuff liner fit is more critical. This thing runs at 1800 RPM on a 30kw gen that spends most of it's life slobbering and lightly loaded.
I’ve got a 4-53 that will blow 2 gallons out the exhaust in 20 minutes
Let me know if you figure it out, or if this helps
I am a mechanic with 30 years of experience in these engines and even on the island where I live we have many marine engines and I continue to repair them, what the video says is true and another problem is that the spare parts no longer exist.
I have seen x head pistons in as early as 1969.
I just assumed that DD engines were supposed to have a mess of old oil grunge in the airbox since every one I have ever seen was like that.
This has been a known problem with the crosshead type pistons of Detroit Diesel engines ever since this type of pistons was used. From memory, that was already the late 1970s. In the Netherlands, tests were carried out with rubber seals by mechanic Piet Brokx (RIP) from Shipyard De Haas in Maassluis (SDMM department), who solved the problem. In my opinion, this should have been known to Detroit Diesel specialists for a long time..
Dumb question but which way does the rod go in on a 71 series? Rebuilding my 3-71 and forgot to mark which side of the engine the numbers on the rods/caps were facing.
The rod and cap is stamped on the side that faces the blower. The blower on this one was on the right/passenger side so they faced that direction. Not a dumb question, the manual is great, but you really have to dig sometimes. There is a 90s version out there, but it is not OCR, there is an 84 manual that I like just to find what section to read. The 90s manual has a lot of updates in it. I can dig up the links if you are interested.
What's the purpose in running it against the governor at no load to break it in it has to be under load like 80% or it will just glaze the rings and liners
This was an in-frame rebuild. I loaded it the best I could . I would say pulling a dump truck around for an hour is better than no load I tried to use the time intervals listed in the manual
Set your governor gap, that'll take care of the idle surge.
I will double check it. I checked it before the rebuild but I have cleaned a lot of crap out of the governor since then.
sounded good though, You got bigger balls than me, I've built tons of 71 series motors but I ALWAYS clipped some vise grips on the rack tube before cranking it!@@RodC671
i was retired from trucking & repair & my relation has a boat with one those in it! it was forest wood! I was adopted & father mother unknown but the uncle saw my real father ( by court dealing over my adoption he worked for woods company on boats I about I found the factory was ranger boat company!) the uncle gave me a book & said here use this to fix the diesel engine! my ex ran off after I not gonna have fun! well with baby fun not what your looking for! they the 2 stroke all lope a little at idle! even 4 stroke ones do it the beast they are! i had v6 92 tt it ran away & the fire cost me my job! the place burned to the ground! the place was a moving company it had mainly light loads & not real big engines needed like v8 but gas or strait 6 or v6 2 stroke is a GM type ps that who owned the engine design! i found out in court lawyer talk! they knew it would run away & not shut off! run off its own oil! i ended up working for a GM supply place! my job was on line both ways! what i said and saw the day of the fire! or 4 stroke mack or other brands & gas jobs too! they rebuilt but the place went out like 15 years after or more!
I'm going to up the idle and run the buffer screw in a bit. I don't I think the rolling will ever completely go away but it is better warmed up.
Ahhh yes, back when Autocar was an independent US company, not a trim package for a Volvo...

Sweet!!
Wow, very cool. Don't stick your finger in there!
This is really kewl!
Anything dangerous is cool
@@RodC671 always!!
The cylinders just slide right in. What’s it take to pull an old one out?
Liners*
The 71 series have dry liners. You put a bar through the exhaust ports on top of the piston,, then as you bar the motor over, it will force the liner out. 92 can be done the same way, but they are a wet liner. If you make your own bar you have to be careful not to scratch the area where the O-rings go around the liner
@@RodC671kewl thanks for the info. Great video!
@@RodC671 so when I pull the covers on the side will I need new gaskets for them or are they pretty well reusable?
@@poorfarm-nn6ii they are generally reusable. Usually really thick cork
And maybe a little D4H cat sitting there too. I’ve got some videos running one of those. Great machine.
Yes, we just put an undercarriage on it last year there should be videos on here
@@RodC671 nice. They are nice units. A little more work than the newer machines but still great equipment.
Motocross track?
I don’t know what kind of oil is in my truck. I bought all the 40w they had at the store and plan to buy some more so I can do an oil change. But if I gotta tear it down I’d rather not dump out new oil. So I need to find the issue.
Keep watching O'Reilly's Auto Parts if you need oil. They have it you can order right to your house and they usually run a 15% or 20% off coupon.. I am betting you have the same issue we had
@@RodC671 probably so. Is it a pricey one to fix?
@@poorfarm-nn6ii it will depend on what's wore out when you get in there. It's basically an in-frame rebuild
You got a subscriber! Thanks for the info. My buddy keeps saying blower seal. I’m gonna a pull inspection plates and have a look.
The best ring compressor is a used liner. Cut off below the ports to use the lower half of the liner and tapered in the lathe
Outstanding troubleshooting and information gathering. Nice work. Glad to see someone put knowledge into troubleshooting instead of preconceived ideas and folk lore.
A lot of it was finding some old timers that lived through this era. I don't think a lot of them get to the interweb, and their valuable knowledge gets missed. The guys on Detroit Diesel Enthusiasts really helped confirm my suspicions.
Good on you mate, you briefly touched on some of the 'urban' myths that are put out there by you tubers as if they are gospel, basically when 'operated' correctly maintained, and not abused these motors are reliable, durable and have inherent longevity 👍
An aluminum ring compressor is a poor choice because it's soft
It only had to do 6 pistons, so far not a scratch. I have seen some plastic ones!
There's an update on the expanders that the points go down
Cool, can you send me a link? The last manual I have says up.
If you oil the piston skirt where the retainer goes it will always work unless there's something wrong with the skirt or the retainer
Thanks for posting that, I found it very interesting

How’s the machine been treating y’all? How many hrs? Looks great
It has been great. We are just over 1K hours on the BobCat, and about 850 on the MF.
