Recirculating Shower For Under $100 In An Ambulance

#Vanlife #RecirculatingShower #Staywarm This is my indoor and outdoor setup for the ambulance. Some folks like exotic systems with filters to capture the water and use it many times. The foam stuff idea is great. I did all that. As an ocd gunsmith, I have to constantly improve. I got a diesel damper. ..installed after the pump. The best improvement. I even took all the foam off the pump. Google diesel heater damper.
What are the best links to find a good ambulance?
It looks like you are attaching items directly to the inside surface of the cabinet. Is it that a coating on the aluminum? That’s what I have. A textured, spayed on coating. Did you use self tapping screws? And why did you decide to line your solar cabinet with plywood instead of mounting components directly to the original surface in that instance? (I’m on the fence about it, the one reason I’m considering it is that all of the screws that come with my wiring kits are not self tapping…I suppose I could just switch out for those…).
Annie - yes in the plumbing/water tank area with self tapping screws. I attached the plywood in the electrical cabinet to the aluminum channel with the channel nuts that came with the ambo and just repurposed them. The channel provides strength and air ventilation behind the equipment that was mounted to the plywood. It also allows for semi-recessing the bolts for a cleaner surface to mount items. It also allowed (channel) to remount the bottom aluminum tray where the batteries are. At 5:11 you can see below to get another glimpse - th-cam.com/video/m9ksA4K62FA/w-d-xo.html
I am looking for a rear lift like that. Was there a manufacturer label ?
I’m 17 and I just bought a ford e350 and it didn’t come with the other batterys only one small one in the front they took the others out but it still has the inverter and I don’t know if it’s ok if I put 12v li batteries in the place for the others in the back and does the ambulance pull from those back batteries to start or is it possible to keep them separate
Welcome to your new adventure. Without knowing the specifics it is difficult to tell. Many manufacturers did different configurations. For batteries in general, it is better to have them manufactured and out in service at the same time. Mixing and matching can provide undesirable results, like the weakest battery voltage will pull the others down to it. As for chemistry, would recommend keeping them separate from lead acid that start the vehicle. The charge controller has the ability to have an input to charge your house batteries while driving.
Is there a benefit to completely separating the house and truck electrical, or can I just tie in my battery on the house side if the isolator? That way my house battery can charge off the alternator on a cloudy day.
It depends upon how it is wired and it seems like the Ambo's are all a little different and have multiple configurations. Correct, there is the way to use the alternator, as depicted in the videos connecting to the Victron as it has more than one input.
My only fear is Connecting too much power to the electronics. But I guess it’s no different than if I was jump starting the car.
Mine has an isolator but even when I supply power from my house battery I have to trick it into thinking the ignition is on before the boards are powered up.
Are you available for hire to do installs for others? I have an ambulance that I am converting. You do such a good job.
Annie- unfortunately, I'm unavailable. Thank you.
@@MrKeithCronin if I were to hire an electrician, do you have suggestions as to what type of experience or expertise I should consider?
@@anniewisecarver744 well, there are 2 parts: the DC wiring and the AC wiring. Often electricians have a strength on the AC side as it is more common. You could also consider seeking out someone that works in solar with batteries as a suggestion.
Your filter is upside dowm
Nicely done! I’m copying this setup
Just buy earplugs $1
I’m not understanding about the noise complaints about the diesel heaters , I have two of them in my house and they sound like a really quiet dryer , Ian’s I barely hear the clicking of the fuel pump I don’t get it .ones a 8kw and ones a5 kw
Great stuff very quiet ,just be aware of the base of the heater usually has a seal on the base (red or black ) this was designed so it seals the base of the unit to a floor so no fumes can leak upward into heater area and then into habitation in the event of any exhaust fail or other leaks .
Keith, are you still making videos?
Rick- paused production for now.
Good morning! Thank you for this video and sharing your build/experience. I just picked up an older 94 F350 one and am methodically going through it from engine/cab to house. Mech first. ;-). The electrical is intimidating but as you mentioned I love how well they labeled everything. I'm going to use much of your build in my plan and again, appreciate your help!!
if that is soft, open-cell polyurethane foam, could it degrade and become sticky over time?
Keith, if you don’t want that Bariatric Lift I could be willing to take that off your hands. I have a 2003 Freightliner M2 Ambulance that I’m slowly converting. I have MS and use a wheelchair 97% of the time and I’ve been looking for those lifts with little luck. I was looking for your email but don’t see it. Is it on a page I’ve not seen, I don’t think so. Any suggestions? Mark R. Weaver
First of all, nice looking conversion :-). I would be somewhat concerned about the fiberglass exhaust wrap breaking down and getting sucked into the cabin air of your vehicle. It’s hard to see, but the wrap material is constantly shedding fragments of glass.
Hi I am considering a Ambo as a tow vehicle. Are you in CA and if so do the upcoming diesel/emissions laws impact ambos? Im trying to figure this out before purchasing. Thank You
How did that work out ?
Great info thank you very much !
Great preliminary details- with the mock cardboard run - very informative thanks for that - enjoying your narration of your step by step
Get rid of all that plastic and cheap ducting and get semi ridgid dry duct. Home depot has 3" everbuilt semi ridgid duct - it works perfect. It will make 90 degree turns etc and stay in place, wont melt/smell, and is way cheaper and easier for connectors
No worse than a grandfather clock!
I did it very simple to ours. Use a car radiator hose. I am into the automotive sector. So i could get one what perfectly fits around the pump. Only the connector part could not fit. Put at the other site whats is free another thick rubber hose into the bigger one so that a lot of the pump is covered with rubber. Big difference according old situation. You can hear it ofcourse but a huge difference than before and at a very comfy level. Think simpel…..
Thanks, dude!
sorry to say but you shouldnt have the pump horizontalit wears out quicker as its not lubricating properly and will be prone to creating air bubbles in it resulting in an inconsistent flow...look up john mack 47 on here,he is really good on them and explain better.
its very hard to explain in words but I built a small plywood box for the pump and suspended the pump with loops of narrow gauge bungee cord so that when you shock the box the pump moves freely suspended in mid air the shock wave made by the pump as it clicks is absorbed by the bungee cord and silences the pump completely two holes drilled in the top of the box over the pump shafts and a looped bungee cord around the pump shaft four loops pulling the pump to the centre of the box so it hangs in mid air seems to work very well indeed, you can still mount the pump easily at 45 degrees. There are also some solutions where others have mounted the pump with zip ties to allow the pump to move as it clicks, the general consensus is to allow the pump to move freely as it clicks thus absorbing the shock wave it produces.
Have any photos?
Pump may over heat. Need a heat sink. metal mass mold around pump will deaden the pulse and dissipate heat.
Wtf is metal mass mold? R u an american? Why u ppl struggle to speak English properly? Just say a metal box!!
not sure if your pump is vertical at least 30 deg but it should be to add life.
how long does the diesel last?
Depends upon a host of variables like the outside temp, your desired inside temp. However, there is a hand pump that you can use to pull from the main tank. But that tank will last 3+ days from my experiences.
The ticking is quiet inside and out. That's not a problem for me... But, I do have a problem. I just put on a muffler and it didn't do a thing. I can hear the exhaust coming out still fairly loudly, and I can hear, what seems to be a fan? It's very loud and a bit of a higher pitch... Inside the camper it's fine. But outside it's very loud and obvious.
Is it your wife?
Great info, thanks! Do you know of a source for cheap clear lenses to swap out the red/amber ones?
Link for "Large crimp tool" doesn't go to a "Large crimp tool"
Your link for the "Large crimp tool" goes to cable, not the tool.

Hi Keith, I'm just curious about how much of the electric of the original ambulance was left in the box, is the added solar a completely different system. I've seen videos of ambulance electrical systems being a complete nightmare. Would it be possible to add a generator into the old ambulance system when shore power wasn't available. Thanks for any help and answers you can provide, I'm currently weighing different possible vehicles for a future in living a nomad life. Thanks again for your time, Robert.
sure looks like idyllwild!

Great job. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Really great and informative video. You attention to detail is superb.
Do you have a list of all the items in your power system? I want to install the same thing in a 2003 ambulance I just bought. Thanks
This in detailed in the description of this video: th-cam.com/video/j1yAPU0J_Gw/w-d-xo.html
Very interesting video. Thank you for taking the time to film it and share it. I noticed you used "Lynx adapters" to connect the distributor to both the switch and the shunt. What kind of adapters are those and where do you buy them?
If I understand your question, it is from the lynx to the disconnect switch and lynx to shunt that is covered with the rubber material with the clips? Just used a copper bus bar that you can find on Amazon.
@@dailydestinations9416 Thank you for your reply. Yes, that bar is what I mean. Do you know the measurements?
@@viajesjaipurofficial Measure the dimensions of the lynx. Match them and find one on Amazon.
Great work.. I am still struggling with how to get the solar panel cables into the cab.. I don't want to drill into the roof... Thoughts? I am using a solar generator just to get me started.
Most ambo's have antennae's on the roof. So I utilized the existing hole and used this amzn.to/3PP0mYs
Keith - how did you run the solar connection into the cab?
There are hollow walls between all cabinets and fished the cabling
so you are 'backfeeding' the ac panel with a 50 amp double pole breaker ?
That's right. The Victron has a 50 amp pass thru capacity.
Great video!
Great idea, I am going to steal it for my own ambulance! Just a note, if you use the proper crimping tool for your terminal you do not have to solder them. I have worked on airplanes and helicopter maintenance and we always just crimp the terminals.
Bobcat. Looks sick.
Great explanation here. Gives me ideas for my setup.
Good video. I've been running a $150 bar fridge for about a year. It's been great on both efficiency and noise. It's not handled the abuse of bumpy roads very well though. Seems to be a bit of luck in getting a normal AC fridge that can handle the bumps.
