Hello everyone,
Jim Ballard here I am a Woodworker & maker in TN specializing in woodturning. I have been turning since my freshmen year of HS in 1976. My passion runs deep for this Art and I am now turning full time. I also love photography which has led me to filming. I hope it shows in my videos. My videos of late are a new phase of, get to the turning quick. Show the finished piece in the begining and not waste any time.
Shorts have recently become a great avenue for folks to find my channel and see what I may be up to. Thank you for visiting.
Please note that in some of my videos I do not always use a face shield. I do not advise this for anyone new to turning or to anyone who might turn at very high speeds. I rarely turn more than between 3-500rpm on anything with a dia of 10”.I understand fully the risk I am taking.
Thank you for your support and please be safe and turn as slow as possible.
On my front banner are my links to Etsy, web page and linktree.

I do this exact same way only I use the 60 raptor gauge!👍
@@jonperley7304 I haven't bought a new gouge in years
I have seen a lot of turners refer to the 2" protrusion of the tool. Why 2 inches?
@DennisDolan-fl3mw Hello Dennis, it is in a range of distance that, in combination with everything else, delivers a usable angle for optimum use. Could it be more or less? The answer is yes. However, find what works for yourself and then always rinse and repeat. The 2" is just the middle of the road. I hope this will help. Take care,
Clever
@@rlarson8470 thank you Larson
Why 7 1/8"?
Great question, Dennis. It is just a length that I use that is in a range of tolerance. It may work at 7" for you. As an added note, if the sides get to be growing in length, take some more off the front. Over time, you just steer that ship and keep that feel of its cut managed in your own sweet zone. If you can manage that, you will turn more and take less of that expensive tool. Take care, and thank you for commenting, Dennis.
I cannot believe that someone would be so stupid as to wear flip-flops in a workshop!
Thank you for this interesting comment. I don't get many comments these days so, I appreciate it. Take care
Nice little vase
Thank you Mas
Great video. Right to the point. I have tons of Spalted Beech that I will be working on after watching this.
Awesome! Let see what you make.
A complete work of art ! Thanks Jim
Thank you for that. Comments like that make the juice worth the squeeze.
Beautiful workmanship
Thank you very much.
Hi Jim, Looks amazing..... i still have not come to it to make a barrel Jim's style .... to many hobby's i gues..... hahahah
Thanks Peter, Maybe one day you will give it a go. Thanks again,
Nice guitar music!
Thank ya Tracy
so extremely skilled
Sorry I'm late, my friend. Your comment was, for some reason, held for review. I really appreciate your comment. It means a lot.
Excellent instructional video. Thanks.
Thank you, Dennis. I appreciate your comment.
Hey Jim, this is Casey from Rockler!
It was great to meet you today, Casey. You are more than welcome to try this at my studio. Give me a shout.
@@ballardjim sounds great to me!
Using your hammer dose it not damage your drive center. Jim's wood shop.
It can, and I have since purchased a softer hammer.
Cool items Looking Great
Thank you. They sell very well.
My new bar for festivals worked great.
We The People
That one is on the shelf
Love this
Thanks Woodruff
those are awesome!
That coming from you, Kim, is very much appreciated. I'm looking forward to seeing you back at the lathe. Much regards, Jim
@@ballardjim Mee too! Your work inspires me and I can't wait to try this. God bless! Happy Thanksgiving ❤️
@@KimTippin Please let me know how it goes when you do. Take care,
It's called a piece of art
Good call
When casting this cherry burl, it is always a great surprise.
Maybe the names of Whiskey clubs ?
Great idea, Peter but that would be a special order.
I just bought a brand name bowl gouge today and it was only $50 bucks. I don't think that's that expensive. Good video though.
Thank you
This pen was purchased at 1st showing.
That wire hanging down could be dodgy
Studio is much better now. That was a few years back. Thanks for your comment.
This pen was sold quite fast at it's first showing. I miss it already.
Man in the Box. Nice!
Thanks, Tracy. I'm just taking advantage of all the tools offered
Great tunes!
That it is!
Was this at grand river arts fair?
No sir, it was in Gallatin TN.
Jim, you are so talented! Love your vids!
Thanks Tracy
What videogame is that from?
Sonic
Sonic for sure
Never retired just on to new projects 😂😅
Very true!
For sure
@@ballardjim I appreciate it I will definitely follow for the process of your labor and to see the end results and hopefully learn a thing or two
Why did I think this was on a drill press? Nice work!
JUst the camera angle I guess. Thanks!
Turned out nice Jim! What kind of wood did you use? Thanks for sharing!
Mahogany. Thanks
Straight to the action, no flashy intro music and what your uncle third removed had for breakfast last Sunday-you get my drift. Exactly whatI needed to know and clearly see. You have a great shop mate there, thank you for sharing your skills. Greetings from Tasmania Australia 👍😁🇦🇺🦘
Hello and thank you very much. I am still using the same gouge. I hope my recent videos hold up to the same scrutiny.
Quem sabe sabe! Beleza!
Thank you
Uh oh! That could have ended badly. Thankful it didn't.
The wood didn't care for it much, and I did not care for those calipers anyway.
Love this! Also, good tune!
Thanks as always Tracy
how many do you still need to make ? ;-)
At the moment I need 52 more out of 100. I'm getting 6 a day but that is with a lot of other things like sanding the tops and Bottoms and packing for shipping
Hope you have a duplicate that's a lot of spindles!😮
I am the duplicator. The total number needed is 100. Shouldn't take too long. Take care.
No finger damage.... then youre ok :-)
All is well my friend. Thank you
Love it
Thanks for your comment. That was the 1st time that has ever happened.
You’ll never believe this, but “Accidental Raspings” is the name of my Steely Dan cover band. Nice work, by the way. Loved the format.
That's great you caught that. The format was fun. It makes for an easy workflow when editing. Thanks Cody.,
great idea Jim
Hello Brian, Thanks man. If you need some dimensions, let me know.
Simply beautiful! You are a true craftsman!
Well, thank ya Tracy. Always great to hear from ya.
What’s a spindle
It could be the pickets in a railing, backs of wooden chairs etc.
Bowl gouge? It's more like a spindle gouge, with a shallow groove.
Thank you
Have a great idea let's make a video with the title and the video is so short that you can't even see anything that reflects that title. Thanks bro
They aren't called shorts for nothing. Thanks for your comment, really.
@@ballardjim I really wanted to see what the final product was. But you never showed it, so the video felt like a short tease.
@@CC-mq6xl correct. Please visit my channel. Thanks
You can’t do that. It cuts into corporate profits. I will forward this to them PROFIT BEFORE PEOPLE!!! You are in violation of this ethic.
That was very well said.
