Music History Right There By The Edge
“Even his mother calls him the Edge” - Bono
Best intro of music history
I believe that during the live footage the album version is the one played.
I wouldn't say the beatles had great guitar players in the hendrix sense of the word...and it is the same for u2.... but then tell me anyone else who can create songs like the beatles and u2.... that's all that matters to me... its the feel and melody's I'm after .. and u2 in the late 80s was a wicked band that left there Mark...still works today.. always will ..as a guitarist..the edge is underated... have a go...it ain't as easy as it sounds..
Almost, all the roads lead to Brian Eno.
I liked the film but thought Jack was a little dismissive of Edge like “ok whatever”. I mean, the condescending… yeah I liked white stripes, but was never blown away by
I don’t like his music it’s cool but I don’t like the way it sounds
Gênio 👏👏👏👏
1:45 “the first section is a different time signature, bit of a head trip to go between the two” I covered Streets with my band a few night ago for a pub gig. “Head trip” is an understatement 😅 we scrapped the intro entirely. We forgot we had to go back to the 5/6 timing for the outro and it threw us completely off 😂 overall the audience enjoyed it though
People can say whatever they want about Edge. But anyone capable of writing a guitar intro so iconic it appears in the conversation alongside Wish You Were Here and Stairway to Heaven as the greatest in the history of rock deserves every bit of respect they receive.
Que triste como gostava das músicas dele descanse em paz nos braços de Deus Eric obrigada por suas lindas canções
The master...
Hack. Fraud.
This is the song that made me a true U2 fan and even today, 30+ years later, I STILL get chills when I listen to this guitar intro. Edge was hard on himself because he wasn't a "true shredder" guitarist, but the sound he created in the 80s is still my favorite guitar sound of any band ever. He's a musical genius, no matter what he thinks about himself.
How do you know if that is his kitchen?😂
anyone who calls themselves "The Edge" is obviously fuckin pretentious and fuckin absolutely empty inside...
Edge isn’t a virtuoso like Page .. but I like his guitar sound With or Without You & I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.. unique to the U2 sound.
super cool!!
U2 is part of my life
The Edge é extremamente criativo, ele é um produtor arranjador que usa a guitarra como instrumento para expressar as suas criações melódicas.
Beautiful. The Edge is one of the guitarists I admire. Unique in terms of equipment and style of play. I like him.
Is the EDGE sometimes taking a break from being the EDGE ???
Loved this movie...the love , respect and adoration each guitarist had for one another was absolutely beautiful. I bought this movie 4 times...last time was on blu ray...I gave it away to friends 3 times because I wanted to share the joy I felt watching it.
F is he? makes me proud to be a weeeeee lad
Just one of the things Edge does is create guitar loops that make stadiums full of people lose their minds in utter rapture, year after year, all round the world, for decades now. Legend!
This is what most of the audience waits for, me included. Best song ever.
I love his damn kitchen as much as I love their music. This is a real person, right here.❤🎶🤘🏼🥰
How these dipshits thought that somehow "the edge" and Jack White had anything musically in common with Jimmy Page. JImmy Page taught millions how to play the blues, open tunings, Gaelic acoustic quiet passages followed by heavy blues riffs, Stairway to Heaven, The Song Remains the Same, .....The edge could use a digital delay pedal.....yawn....jack white great tone but that's it, no virtuousity what so ever. No where near the same league as Jimmy Page. closer to britney spears or Paula Abdul musically
He should be called Epic instead of Edge
Phenomenal. The sheer power of truly unique and great music will never cease to amaze me!
What an innovator!
The concert footage is from Slane Castle 2001. I was at that very gig
It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve heard that into, it always makes my heart soar, especially live. And that’s exactly what music is supposed to do.
Lads a genius❤
It never got loud
Being at a U2 show and Edge starts this intro I get teary eyed every time. This tour at the Sphere is the best venue I’ve ever seen u2 at. Was there Dec 1, 2 in section 101, going back Jan 26, 31, Feb 17, 18, March 2 all in GA. I already passed my 100th U2 in Australia in Nov 2019
I’m still upset that I can’t make it to Vegas for one of those shows. ‘Streets’ is the very first song of theirs I heard live in 1987 on the Joshua Tree tour. I was 16, lol. Seems like forever ago. Doesn’t matter, I always tear up when this song starts. Always.
Even his mother calls him “The Edge”
How cool to see edge digging out the box of 4 track cassettes.
make a song that makes ya jump up and down sweet sweet sweet
This and Light my fire by The Doors are probably top 5 musical lead into vocals ever created.
To this day, one of the biggest surprises of the Edge is that no one knows what he keeps under his hat.
Goosebumps.... every time! Especially when I'm there live in concert
1.12 you MIGHT have something there Edge
He can sure write great guitar riffs, but that kitchen looks like a poor man's kitchen from the 1970s 😮
🙂
@4:35 holy crap is that the Edge not wearing a hat?!?
His kitchen looks so bloody normal.
The guitar??? What freaking guitar if I may ask??? It's all pedals, it's all... made up not sweat, not talent. I still can't-don't know what is The Edge doing in this documentary? He'd paid his way in... is Is this song his best? or One?.. "One" is known by the chorus and verses, in other words as U2 is known, by Bono! Take "One", or this "Where Streets have..." compare any of these things to Immigrant Song/Whole Lotta Love, or Stripes's 7 Nation..., Dead Leaves &..., Blue Orchid.. what in God's sake is that guy doing here! If someone explain reasonably, I'll get it.. and it's not simple, minimalistic shiiit... Simple is good, is art. Simple is... 7 Nation Army, is Hypnotize, simple is Gallow's Pole, it's Dazed and Confuzed... "Where the Streets have no Shiit" is all arrangements, I play guitar, I know what a guitar made-up sounds like He's definitely not at the same level at the other two guitar gods, at some points it's even a pity to watch him wither and bow down to the guitar gods Jack and Jimmy Kinda pissess me off cause I think it would be the best documentary every if "tHe eDgE" would be replaced by Lenny Kravitz and add as the lattest guitar player Alex Turner Imagine 70's: Jimmy Page 80's: Lenny Kravitz (F^^*uck the Edge), 90's-2000's Jack White and 2010's Alex Turner THAT. that would be a documentary
It pains to me seeing this guys talking about music. Music takes you..? If Page would let himslef taken away or Jack there wouldn't be great guitar players... How Stairway to Heaven would be kick off? The Edge says he let music takes him away because Bono's lyrics make the whole song, tell me... Just tell me.. please.... How Seven Nation Army would exist if Jack would let be cariied away by Meg's drums? drums are just a secondary act or... How Stairway to Heaven would be carried away "by the music" if the lyrics start more than a minute after? Not only these songs, ALL OF THEM!!!!!!! A GREAT GUITAR PLAYER CREATE SONGSSSSS! NOT LET BE CARRIED AWAY!!! A loser guitar player follows the frontman and became a companion guitar, that is what the Edge is, and that's why most of the documentaery he's surprised, he just don't have that creativity
Bro, you are clearly way out of your depth here. Cause both Jimmy and Jack described it as taking them too, just in a different way. And if you don't get why he is here. That is your loss. It is a celebration of the electric guitar in all its forms. Not just the ones "guitar players" think are correct and proper. I play guitar too and think The Edge has a very understated brilliance, is he the best ever? No, not even remotely. But he makes music that takes you places. And that is the point of music in the first damn place. Not virtuosity, showboating and all this making it into a sport. So that is why he is there, he was one of the main ones who showed that guitar playing can be so much more than being larger than life and showing off. He showed the beauty in minimalism, plus he can actually play guitar. You pay enough attention to all his recorded works, you can clearly see this. And is a very accomplished slide player to boot. He just chooses to pare it back to fit the sound of U2. What a musician should be doing in the first place, being a member of their group. Not trying to be bigger than it. I hope you can learn to be more open minded and less critical about others playing. If it isn't for you, fine, so be it. But why not go find a forum dedicated to hate on him. Rather than coming to a video that clearly was posted in celebration of him? It's just a waste of time honestly. All the same, I wish you all the best.
@@RetroVzqz9313 Bro, I don't hate guitar players, at all, I respect all of them bc as you are, I am one too, I see (be aware cause it's a long text, don't read if you don't want to) Limp Bizkit copying Korn, you know Linkin Park in the same way where guitars are just an ornament, but the genre exploded back in the 2000 Maybe you and I didn't like that bc it was grunge mix with hip hop, or maybe you like it I am no U2 hater, I actually grown up with U2 my album was Joshua Tree and the most powerful voice and lyrics I ever heard came from Bono, and... If you are a guitar player and a U2 fan, you KNOW, you KNOW The Edge was another instrument Minimalist? don't bullshhhit me. Minimalist is Jack White with no bass Maybe you got me wrong thinking The Edge is nobody, like all what he did is worthless, no.. it's not Most of the people out there in rock n roll, maybe they can't do what The Edge does, what I meant is that, he's NOT ABLE to be great in the hall of fame He CAN'T create, meaning, he's no able or he has no the capacity to create a memorable riff like Jack or Jimmy As you see on this documentary, when Jack asked The Edge to do his best and he COUDLN'T BECAUSE HE HADNT' THE AMP AND PEDALS WITH HIM You know what I mean now? He's not that talent, in rock and roll he's shit, the producer just didn't thought of someone better or get him bc U2 was his fav band bu he's not the best of the 80's by far.... FAAAR Just tell me that The sloppy Edge is better then Slash? (and not trying to say Slash is the best guitarist of the 80's, there's more) That doesn't mean that he suuuucks, he doesn't, but The Edge belongs to the ornmanents bands like Depeche Mode, Kraftwreck etc He's just a gear assembly of the band, a part of something... Important, but not the base of a band.. like Jack White is or Jimmy Page is... Jack White made legends songs, Jimmy Page made legends songs, what The faucking Edge ever made to be clissified as worldwide without making Bono the main thing in the song? Nothing
@@Stdstr Dude I totally respect and see your point. But you are once again comparing two totally different types of players there. The Edge vs Slash? First off Slash is a lead player extraordinare with an excellent command of rhythm when needed. Meanwhile, The Edge is a damn fine rhythm player and an amazing textural player. The often forgotten third style of playing. So this is total Apples and Oranges. Is Edge worthy enough to be in the Guitar God Pantheon? No, not all. But as a songwriter? Yes, he has created riffs and parts on songs that have inspired legions of guitarists. That act as creative fuel for all kinds of artists. We cannot diminish this man's work. I will admit, I am a massive fan of his. He is a hero of mine and a huge inspiration. But I don't lionize them. He is still a human. Still has limits and can only get so much praise. Mean so much to me. But yes, I see your point. I just happen to adore Texturalists the most. The guitarists from the late 70s up to now. That focus more on evoking a place or washing the song in color. Than anything else. It is very effects heavy. And many may see this as "Non-Playing" but to each their own. Everyone has their own pet sounds. Sorry, if I came off a bit of a dick the first time btw. Judging by this reply, I am relieved you seem to be not a total crazy. I avoid getting into this for that exact reason. Also, yes, Edge is not a total minimalist. He is from Wales. Their music is very choral in nature. He translated this to the guitar. I guess I meant for his prime years. It was. And I do dig Nu-Metal and harder forms of Alternative. I honestly love all music. Nothing really phases me. Even the low tier stuff of nowadays can have a part that appeals to me. This is why I am pursuing a career in audio engineering. To help others realize those sounds in their head. Whatever they may be. I appreciate the convo here. Your views are great to hear. Nice takes on it all. Thanks for that.
@@RetroVzqz9313 I get it and you're right about the differnce of music, but U2 plays on thin Ice of Pop music, it's like Coldplay So if you're telling me Evanescence guitarist we're talking in the same frame Rock different rock style, but still rock The reason The Edge can't be even be consider on this is because of their music. Which is the most rock and roll song they have? The do have a couple; Elevation, Kiss Me, Thrill Me.. But their best song are One, Without Or... (actually bro I'm a U2 fan I grew up with their music I know U2 but this scapes the reach of the Edge) Zepellin, White Stripes are entirely Rock Also rythm is not something you have to appreciate man, if any guitarist or any other musician have no rythm they can't play any instrument, period. It's the basics of music Also man, you CAN'T, you just CAN'T appreciate a Rock & Roll guitar player by the tech! So you think that reggeaton Idk Maluma is better singer than Mariah Carey just because Maluma knows how to "geniusly" use autotune? It's nuts Also I get it, maybe you grew up with his music, I'm not saying The Edge is trash, he's good, but not at the level of these monsters, far from it, he's a pop rock guitar player, he's just an acompanion of the music And actually as a kid one of my first CD's was the U2 greatest hits the one with the kid with the soldier hat, loved U2 along with Queen and Scorpions, then later came Zepellin and White Stripes, but music is music man Not problem, I don't take things personally so don't apologize to be aggressive, I get the passion and I do enjoy a good talk with someone who know music though a different angle, a poorer one hahaha Cheers bro
can we address the washing machine right next to the fridge? Is that a thing people do?
