It’s so healthy to see a collection of hard-core bus nerds in action. Last weekend( 23-03 24), Barking depot held it’s centenary with a rally of thirty or more RT’S to ride for free. Fortunately, there is a bus stop only twenty feet from my home. So of we went freewheeling. The RT is the bus of my youth, if I could own one I would; but parking is a problem.

Aldenham no longer exists now. In 1984, however, my late father and I paid a visit during an open day to the public. It was an interesting experience, and a thoroughly enjoyable day. As well as being able to the various working areas, there was a demonstration of how to "upright" an overturned bus using airbags (I dont think the Routemaster used in the demo ever ran again!!) opportunities to drive a Routemaster supervised on the test track, and a free courtesy bus to and from Stanmore tube station. I was in the industry myself for about 10 years from 2007 onwards, but it's a different world now.

Great video, however these are RT's not Routemaster as said in title.

Sad the title suggests the person posting does not know their RT from their RM. I had the privilege of driving both back in the day. Bus maintenance has never been bettered.

I still think the L T were par excellence and you would need a whiff of oxygen after a meal break to survive LT's steak and kydney pie. The most pleasant job I ever had.

I took my bus test in an RT, Len Pilgrim was our instructor 1976. He related the time when an instructor told the trainee to go through the roundabout, but the rookie literally tried to, say no more.😮

This was when there were actual skilled craftsmen that took pride in what they did. Sadly none left now.

You know what really empress me the most many of the mechanics wearing ties and vest and white shirts and ties,gentlemen absolutely LOL😋

I think that when people refer to work ethics, these people on this video exemplify just that!. I work in a manufacturing and engineering factory and I'm afraid to say that the people who work there are hopeless. No product knowledge whatsoever. Just university graduates with zero practical skills. No pride in their work.

Lovely, glad this film survived. Lot of childhood memories on buses such as that.

Extended Bodies for Most of the Buses Much as I am not comfortable to ask the depot why they stopped running the London Suburban Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW’s on routes N26, 30, 121, 230, 271, 349, N279 And 158 why can’t we make the same make of the Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW Buses but Modernise the insides of these Buses. Also make it low floor up and down and also extend the middle body part of these vehicles a little bit more so there will be more space for the wheelchair users. By the way, if you could remake and Modernise these vehicles could they also make it into a Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW Version’s that if it will be possible and to Modernise the insides of these Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW’s make it low floor up and down and also extend the middle body part of these vehicles a Little bit more so there will be more space and even a London Suburban Scania N230UD Enviro 400 MMC and also extend the middle body part of these vehicles a little bit more. What an utterly rediculous idea to keep repairing sturdy vehicles!! I live in Bolton and their buses were similarly repaired until the Leyland Atlanteans came along and they got rid of their repair facilities and all the skilled staff. Surprise, surprise, ticket prices went up tenfold and the system went from modest profit to disastrous losses every year. Incidentally, where were the so-called 'green' people in those days?

Privatisation killed off all those big workshops and the skilled tradesmen that worked there, men took a pride in their trade and work in those days. Buses these days full of plastic and fiberglass "throw away" sections. Lovely video and very informative, enjoyed it. Thank you.

Sold off for re development......and is now a business park .....just like. The shipyards the railways the mines....one time we built the world 🌍 now we struggle to make sandwiches 🥪....it’s not thatcher it’s not the government it’s the youth of today bone idle lazy bastards and I know because I was 1 of them and seen with my own eyes...how we bitched and whinged and went on strike....for some absolute hideous reasons just because we fancied a few days off.....People have it to easy in this country now and that’s the problem.

There is a lot of nostalgia from comments below but the reality us thst these public transport services and running costs were heavily subsidised to a ridiculous level. In addition, car ownership was a lot less in thrmdays so public transport was more heavily relied on. Things have moved on.

However did they do that without hard hats and high viz and steel toe boots???????????
