Doulas and Advocacy - What's a Doula to Do?
Whether or not “advocacy” is a part of a doula’s role has been a source of controversy within the doula profession. Historically, many doula programs have trained that it is never the doula's role to advocate for the client but rather to empower them to self-advocate.
In contrast to this, when we consult with equity-seeking clients, and ask what they are looking for in a doula, “advocacy” is usually at the top of their list.
In this video our EDI lead Keira takes a dive into the question "WHAT IS DOULA ADVOCACY?".
We hope you enjoy it and look forward to fruitful discussions.

Ever Wonder About Average Doula Rates?
มุมมอง 390ปีที่แล้ว
Doulamatch put together this INCREDIBLE information by analyzing the doula rates of people on their website. I always geek out on this stuff because it's so cool to see what's happening in the birth world around the country. Now I'll be honest, this isn't the most exciting video I've ever done and you may want to skip through to find your state or province, but I do go through all the states an...

Interview with Greer Kirshenbaum, PhD on her new book The Nurture Revolution
มุมมอง 1.3Kปีที่แล้ว
When I began birth work 20 years ago I had a feeling that we could transform the world by starting with birth. While I still believe this, and have a little more research to back-up those claims now than I did 20 years ago, I have to admit I've been blow away reading The Nurture Revolution by Greer Kirshenbaum, PhD. A neuroscientist, doula, infant and family sleep specialist, Greer attended a d...

Are You Self-Sabotaging Yourself in Your Doula Career?
มุมมอง 588ปีที่แล้ว
In the past couple of years we've had the opportunity to hire many new doulas to work at our agencies. One thing we've noticed is how many quit before they even get started. It's a sad thing to see. In this episode we dive into the concept of self-sabotage and imposter syndrome that seems to afflict many new doulas. If you're finding yourself stuck in your doula career, not moving forward, or y...
Doula Job Options - Comparison of the 3 most common
มุมมอง 1.5K2 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video we break down the various options for working as a doula (employee, contractor, or private practice). But better than just talking about it, we actually compared REAL numbers collected from 3 doulas to give an idea of what each could look like. Now "a sample size of 3 does not a study make", but it was still a fun exercise and I think it will be SUPER helpful to those of you consi...

Helping navigate the second stage as a Doula

I'll share a little history, a little evidence, and most important what you can DOula about it with/fo...

Have you ever been a doula teacher? I would love to learn from you. Please consider it.
Helpful!
will you be coming to Australia again? Please! :)
Massachusetts now covers Doula services, but I don’t know what I think about that. I don’t love governmental oversight since I don’t trust the government. I am dependent upon them for housing and food for my family though and I would HATR for someone not to want me because of who’s paying. It’s legally discriminatory but, for example, when apartment searching, landlords can’t say that they don’t accept section 8. They do it but in a way that they usually don’t come right out and say it. I know it though and it makes me feel less than. I don’t want to make anyone feel like that, however, thinking about it as a business owner, I get the hesitation.
Loving this book! Having the scientific sources for these innate feelings I have for my baby has been so helpful. I don’t engage with my MIL but she makes all kinds of comments that let me know she thinks I am making my baby dependent and spoiled by holding/wearing/cosleeping with him.
Thank you very helpful

How do I apply to become a Doula here in Australia?
The doula profession isn't regulated in Australia so choose a training school that you resonate with and start working! There is a lot of need in Australia and a fair bit of demand. We'd love to see you in one of our trainings. Check us out at DoulaTraining.ca
This is one of the 10 comments, I am writing on youtube. Your expressions emotions justifies your point of view. I have subscribed your channel.
Thank you so much! I have my first two clients this summer and feel so prepared now! Hoping for more clients before then!
This was an awesome video! Very informative & personal for our clients!❤️ I start my Doula training next week, I’m very excited & nervous🫶🏾🤞🏾

I just got hired for my first 3 clients and I am so excited to incorporate ideas from this video. I was worried about going over hospital interventions and all the information being daunting but this is a really neat approach!
This is the full quote which no one says it. "A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one."
Hello. Which are the steps to become a child birth educator and doula in UK? Thank you.
Lamaze is an International organization if that interests you and is well-known everywhere. But I always encourage people to choose a certification that feels in alignment with WHAT and HOW they want to teach and go from there. Good luck in your searching and feel free to check out our trainings at doulaschool.ca
I truly thank you for creating such a dynamic video. You shared so many gems, and critically asking the deeper questions to follow up with your business.❤
I didnt knock it
Thanks for making these videos!
Currently reading this book and I am soo grateful for it. Thank you this interview! So interesting what you said about how we’re the most informed generation but the least experienced.. that hit home bc I realised how before having a baby I never really experienced babies around me. For me though, I felt like it forced me to tune into my intuition more and cater it towards my baby trusting that everything she was was absolutely normal and perfect for her. We bed shared since day 1, breastfeed on demand, spend all day everyday together. She is 11 months now and absolutely thriving in every way. So proud of her! I am hopeful and optimistic for the future generations to come.🙏🏽🙏🏽
I don’t see the plan
I have two young boys and I love the idea of becoming a doula but I just don’t have the support as far as babysitters and caregivers that actually trust to leave my kids with.
I just want to thank you for this video! The value added is incredible. Thank you for your time. 🙏
I just checked the website and just missed the August class. Will there be anymore in the future?
Just added our next one, which will be November!
How often do you see your client in a week?
Most doulas include a couple of visits only during the pregnancy! Some include more or have different packages, but it's not the same as visits with a primary care provider since we don't have medical duties. It's more for getting to know them and vice versa.
Oh I see. As a Postpartum doula, how often would you say a client should be seen?
Ah! Well that will depend on their needs and mostly their budget. We sometimes work one time with a client to help provide education and demonstrate techniques and some clients will hire us for 3 months of support! As a birth doula most doulas provide one or two follow-up postnatal visits.
Thank you! Any word about a night doula ?
Well that's usually a little simpler. Typicallly we'll do a check-in when we arrive and then the parents will want to go to bed to get much needed sleep. If the person is body feeding baby then we'll bring them baby to feed and then let them get back to sleep. Different doulas handle things differently for overnight so there is a lot of variation, but mostly people are hiring us so they can recover and sleep so we tend to focus on baby and not on any other chores at night.
Hi I was just wondering is that ok if a mom is 40 weeks pregnancy
Love this! I just have a question, would that value (a month of daycare) be per month or the whole package until the mother gives birth?
Yes, as I describe and have found, that's equal to the typical package (a couple of prenatal visits, birth and one postpartum visit).
You are amazing. I’m off to spend the next hour and a half before a prenatal visit making a pie chart and printing the ideal birth game!
Thank you!🙏🏽
Thank you so much for posting! I can't wait to share this with my husband! He's gonna be my advocate and helper and he's more than willing to do so, I'm so grateful🥰
Good luck!!
Well done on an excellent resource! As a non-clinical midwife and CBE, I would love more of this showing things like sacral pressure for pain relief and those techniques applied on hands and top of shoulders to release oxytocin! I'll keep watching your space and learning to betterr equip our couples for positive labours and births.
The only way I'd ask for a refund would be if my doula couldn't make it to the birth for some reason. But also I can't stand the term birthing person. I'm a woman, not a birthing person, or a chest feeder, or a bleeder. Just say mom. (Because even if she is placing her baby for adoption, she's still the birth mother and should be respected as such)
Unfortunately depending where the doula is certified, we have ethics standards to adhere to and they include using those terms :( but I agree with you 1000%. A WOMAN gives birth.
Do you offer training and certification? I don't see a website. Thanks!
Hi Rhonda! We do :). We have a number of doula and birth work certifications available. You can learn more on our site at doulaschool.ca/?fbclid=IwAR0M4899trTbMZnJCEi3LwtXj2oWpAEcsveRbNEIZDmKqAeHbh025GRNrzs

This is one of the most valuable videos I’ve ever watched. Thank you so much. I really love your perspective. I’m still working on my certification but I know I will be certified this year. I had to get out of my own way! This video is one of the many steps that helped me feel “ready & worthy”. I come back to watch it every once in a while.
Thank you so much Anahata, really sweet of you to say. I'm glad it was helpful!
unrelated but you look just like Alicia Silverstone !

Thank you! I really needed to hear this! I'm still working on my certification but have delayed completion due to "self-sabotaging!."
I’m that doula who keeps signing up for more classes lol
haha, you can never learn too much Krystal :)
I was induced without knowing! They performed an epiziotomy without telling me! This is abuse! That is the prime reason for my decision to be come a doula!
