People need to read the history of this wonderful man. He was a dancer and lost his leg in a cotton gin accident at the age of I think 12 his uncle made his first leg. He went on to be a great performer and owned a resort up state NY in the Catskills from the 50is to the 80is. He should be an inspiration to every American you can overcome anything !!!

We came back to the theater and gave our report to Mr. Bates. Off he went. About ten minutes later, he returned. Seems the staff at the restaurant refused to serve the "nigger." There was no other restaurant close by. So we two 4'10" giants grabbed him and marched back to the restaurant. We demanded to see whoever was in charge. Out came the manager. We told him in no uncertain terms that they would serve Mr. Bates or else we would call the newspaper and the radio and TV and ruin this restaurant. Mr. Bates was served. Mr. Bates still felt humiliated. This was the first time Eudi and I could make a difference. We continue to this very day. Eunice M. Rose Southfield Michigan

Mr. Bates was hungry, so we suggested that restaurant. Off he went. About ten minutes later, back he came. He was livid. The staff at the restaurant refused to serve a "nigger." We, at 4'10" , took him back to that restaurant and told the owner that we and all our troupe would not only eat elsewhere, we would call the newspaper and the radio/TV news and tell them how horrible they treated an icon of the theater world.

I had never heard of this talented entertainer before a few minutes ago when his name came up as an answer on a Match Game rerun. Gene Rayburn quickly pointed out that Peg Leg Bates was, indeed, a fine tap dancer. The celebrities kept riffing on the name. I'm glad I followed up on the lead.
