Channel Islands CI 2.Pro Surfboard Review: will you shred like Italo?
The followup to the CI Pro, the CI 2.Pro dials up its mass appeal and dials down the conditional requirements -- but is it enough to channel your inner Italo and STOMP those full rotes in the flats? No need to watch our review since we all know that answer (it's NO). So instead, check out the video for our take on who this board is for and which conditions you'll enjoy the most!

Great video, no questions, you already answered my questions. Hope you guys have a good winter!
Yewww! Same to you! 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
Shoots! Some great surfing in some sizeable surf. Looks like a great board.
Thanks 🙏🏼 you can’t tell but tried to do our best Italo impression 🤪
Can you guys try the puddle jumper pro. I think you may be surprised by its versatility.
Tell us more! You surfed it at all? I think I can speak for all brothers and say that we’ve never tried a …Lost board. I’m certainly intrigued though.
Does that fit on the factory roof rack?
Hey Rachel! Yeah it does. There is a little rubbing from the tailgate though.
5’6 200 Which size would you recommend. I currently ride a mid 7’4. Intermediate. Mahalo for the guidance.
Hey!! Thanks for the dims, what type of break (beach, point, reef, mushy beach) is your local??
This is one of only two hybrids which the CI website says is suitable for every condition from knee to double overhead+...
Middle brother spoke truth but the other brothers were skeptics! I found it’s a surprising versatile board that can surf a wide range of conditions. The being said, I know I won’t be touching double overhead+ surf at all this winter! I’ll leave it to the chargers and remain safe on my couch. 🛋️
I’m addicted to this board. My normal HPSB is an I72 with 28L. I found a good deal for a new fishbeard in spinetek 5,9 30,2L. First toughts was… maybe this is too much volume for me (1,80m 68kg), but man this is a true HP twinnie, easy to surf and she delivers speed AF. The single concave to flat tail makes magic. Easy to put on rail and complete turns. For those who are afraid to go up on volume (max 2L above your HPSB) don’t hesitate. Riding the AMK KEELS. I got a new love😂
Yes Brother #1 loved the FB also!! 🙌🏼 we agree with your assessment, volume is your friend in this setup!
I got my brand new soloshot 3+ on Oct 18,2024. It is my first time using this for surfing but my tag was get water in it and then second time used was totally died. The quality is not worth the price.powerful funtion but no quality.not recommended to buy.
Dang, that’s too bad!! We’ve had decent luck with the tags, it’s the camera that has been inconsistent. But I guess it’s the same result, a not-so-great experience. If you want to give it another try, they do sell refurbished tags at a discounted price. Hope you get some more life out of it!
The I72 is amazing, been surfing with that model in the past 3 years... I have tried several sets of fins (Toledos, AM's, Performer... the winner is the Dane Reynolds Captain Fins in futures size L.
Nice!! What type of break do you typically surf at? We haven’t tried the DRs, but have had the recommendation before. We will add it to the list

Surfers are really rooting for this camera to work. Despite all the bad press about terrible customer support and a product that just doesn’t perform, people are still willing to throw down $1,200+ in the hopes that this time will be different. It’s kind of crazy, but since it’s the only option for self-recording our sessions, we keep giving it a shot. Hopefully, someone steps up soon with a product that truly meets the demand.
Spot on, we feel the same way. We still use 3 of them!
I took my roadie 24 on a desert road trip and kept things cold for 3 stinkin days. So great that you make these videos so people can truly understand.
They’re legit. 🤙🏼👌🏼
Can't believe it! I haven't thought of sticking my boards in my roofbox. What a genius idea to make the whole family happy
Anytime bruddah Sam!
This is the best video I've seen on elastic key strings ever!
Shoots braddah!

Lol
Hey, where do you store your phone while surfing? Is there a place in your car that you can place it where the car won't turn on and work or just stay on when you leave your phone in the car?
Gooooood question!! There are a couple options. You can leave it in the car but we’d recommend at least turning it off as well as finding a good hiding spot. Depending on the session, you can also leave it at home and just use the watch as a digital key. Hope that helps!
@@greenroomsurfreviews I read that you can also just turn off Bluetooth for the phone to not start your car. I’m thinking in the glovebox would be best with a passcode on it.
@RVCrazy yup yup that’s right. Also, we like to test the watch before locking everything down (with the phone off and outside the car). Would hate to have something malfunction the one time we didn’t 😭😂😵💫
@@greenroomsurfreviews Smart. If you have a cellular plan on your apple watch you could always call or text someone else that has your tesla key in their app to unlock your car and start it as well.
Also just picked up a black sheep lost Pisces and would to hear your takes on it
I have dd2 in spinetek and dd2 fins. Board is actually pretty magic. Didn’t like it at first and then I’ve figured it out. Although I think it was designed for small range most people including myself like it in 3+’ surf. I think there are other boards that are better designed for bigger waves but for an all arounder this one does it.
Yeah we had a similar experience! It’s best in bigger/better waves and we prefer other models to grovel. We really dig spine-tek and would love to get our hands on a DD2+Spine-Tek. Hopefully soon!
Can I ask what size you went with relative to your height and weight? I have read people opting to go smaller, like 4" below their height, but I usually ride a 6ft 1 and I am 5ft 10, 176lbs, so buying a 5ft 6 doesn't really make sense to me. Thanks.
@sebbeasant1868 yeah great question!! Lots of opinions on how to choose dimensions - here’s what has worked best for us 🫣 we like to stick to the shaper’s proportions and if we find our preferred volume, that gets us to the right board (or close). Before we recommend a setup, what type of waves are you in? Skill level?
@sebbeasant1868 I’m 5’10” 165. I thought the 5’7 was a pinch too big. I would size down to the 5’6 if I were to get another.
this was really helpful! thanks
🤙🏼
Thanks for this helpful and honest review. After seeing this im sticking to recording 4K on my iphone
Yeah the video on iPhones is definitely better!! Our biggest issue is who stands on the sand to record 😭🤪🫣
@@greenroomsurfreviews well, for 1500$ you could hire someone for at least a week or two ;-) Otherwise for just analyzing your own surfing, cropping is gonna be good enough if you're not too far from the phone.
is it similar to sub driver 2.0?
Brother 2 here. I have never surfed on a …Lost board. Would love to try it as it is another Californian native company. As described on its website, “it loves small to average surf and really does well in connecting the dots in mushy points, or weak, broken up beach breaks. A surfboard developed for competitors in sub-par surf, that actually transitions perfectly to everyday surfers. The SUB DRIVER 2.0 was derived to benefit the Pros, yet it really is perfect for most “Bros”.” 😂🤙🏼
Right on with the sampler comparison. I have this board and it’s not like the original DD at all. It actually seems like less rocker, and the tail is a lot less refined or performance style.
Yeah we weren’t disappointed but also it didn’t exceed expectations like the OG DD did. It’s a good board, just wasn’t the magic sled for us! Is it too early to start frothing for a future DD3🤞🏼?
Has anyone tried with quad config?
That’s a negative ghost rider! I can only speak for myself (brother #2) but I have rarely dabbled with the quad set up. What do you like about quads?
@@greenroomsurfreviews well, im used to them. Basically, the speed, from first momment. But thats why im asking. I havent seen anyone
Felipe makes a compelling case for quads with his Trestles performances, that’s for sure. Another realization I had is that the DD2 comes in a tri fin set up so currently no quad option unless someone were to order a custom.
Anda the veridict?
Keeping it as a 2+1
@@greenroomsurfreviews better 2 more fast like you say
I’m 47, 185 and ride a 30.5L 5’10 HE and I use it for groveling and good waves. Spintech is the only way to ride these. PU is too heavy.
You are confirming what we’ve heard about this model! The more people we talk to regarding the HE, the more we hear that spinetek is their preferred construction. You nailed it on the head in that the PU is simply too heavy and causes the board to feel too big or sluggish. Spine-Tek - this is the way. Thanks for the share!
Great review! You guys need to try this board with different sets of fins, I've tuned mine with Britt Merrick (semi-keel) fins for most days, and only use the AM Keels when waves go off head high. I'm truly in love with with this board with the BM fins to the point that it has become my daily driver.
Thanks @luizs.f5305 we’ll give it to try! 🙌🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
Brahhhh, I wish I had discovered this tip a year ago hahaha. I already sold my board but the good news is that Andrew has his. Could be a game changer for me. Unfortunately, I don’t think Dan will be trying it anytime soon 😂
Pyzel red tiger review?
Yo Ronny! We have yet to sample any Pyzel nectar. Your comment sent me down a worm hole on Facebook marketplace. The red tiger and white tiger both seem like boards that would be up our alley so know it’s been added to our list. Bad news is that we are on dad time which equals 🐢. Have you surfed any Pyzel boards yet?
@@greenroomsurfreviews All good lads, Can confirm also on dad time. But looking to see some reviews before i treat myself to a bday gift. The red tiger and chili churro 2 look good.
Thank you
Let us know how the session(s) go!!
Think it would be a good begginer surfboard in a 5’10? Im 5’7 155 pounds.
hey charleshawk6668!! we’ve found what benefits beginners most, is time in the water and repetition. Even though the G-Skate was designed for the average+ surfer, if it gets you in the ocean more, then the short answer is yes! That being said, we think you can get more value and skill progression (faster) with other board choices out there. A Costco Foamie or MF Softboard will increase your wave count and you will get use out of them year after year (PU boards yellow and break down faster). If only we had taken our own advice, maybe we’d be average+ surf dads instead of just average surf dads 😭👴🏻 Let us know if you have more questions! 🙌🏼
Its crazy how individual surfboards are. What works well and is fun for 1 person, is a dog for another. You guys nailed the point of paying full price. No one wants to pay $800+ for a "maybe".
Yeah great point jamesk9087. we’ve found it’s less about a board being good or bad, and more about the type of surfer/surfing that can have the most fun on it 🙌🏼
So basically this is the board to get when we have kids
Awesome board for the family or if waves at the local stay micro 🙌🏼
7/4-6: I travel to the Wedge (Newport, CA) to get pounded by a southwest swell, but I can't film myself since my camera isn't working and is still with SS. 6/22: SS receives the camera. 6/18: After attempting to remote troubleshoot with the SS rep, and me sending them video of doing what they asked for, I was asked to send the unit back. 6/10: New issue: camera tilts down and just doesn't function. I contacted SS by email and received a response the next day (great service in that respect). 1/22: Received slip that looks like my camera is at the post office. 1/9/2024: On 12/1/23, I sent an email to support because my tag wasn't working, nor charging. I found out, on my own, that I needed to discharge the camera battery so that the camera needed charging. Only then would the tag charge. However, it took 26 days for an email reply to this tag issue. However, the rep asked if I had any other issues and I was able to share an issue that just came up a couple days prior. So, this next issue could be considered a 2-day response. On 12/27, I was notified I had to send my camera in due to issue #2. I sent my camera back on 12/27/23 and am currently waiting for it to return.
‼️ wowzers. Yeah unfortunately we had a similar experience with the 3+. The review is coming soon…but spoiler alert, it’s close to yours!
Hi I am 5’ 11” and I mostly ride mid lengths and high volume grovelers and am thinking of getting a 6’2” to just cruise through dumpy Florida beach break. Is that a good idea for a beginner shortboarder? Thanks
Hey @kstrophs85!! Good on yah for picking a sport that will spend all your money for the rest of your life! 😭 🙌🏼 A few things we learned about the DD2 - opt for Spine-Tek/XTR, size down an inch in length from your normal groveler, and get it in steeper/better waves. (hard to recommend exact dims without knowing weight). And we know recommendation #3 might also be tough given your local. The DD2 is all the rage right now and can definitely work, but there might be better options out there. If you’re sticking in the CI family, check out the G-Skate, Rocket Wide, and POD Mod. We bet you can pick one up second hand (or all three) to find what you like/don’t like. Beginner shortboarding is all about repetition. Sounds like you’re prioritizing the right things (HV grovelers and Mid-lengths), keep that same logic as you transition shorter! But keep in mind we’re just some average surf dads on the interwebs 😂🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
Just any kind of normal sock and flour?
Yep!
good to see you guys back on the board reviews. keep em coming!
Thanks!
good review... its a good board but its not a groveller at all. The best sessions ive had were all at barelling chest high waves. Agree with the tips on sizing, i made the wrong choice and went 5'8" instead of 5'7" and its a lot of volume.
Yeah we’re hearing the magic combo is good waves, spine-tek, minimally raked fins, and an inch or so smaller than normal groveler dims. Or just surf like Dane! 🙌🏼 We definitely had fun on it (Brother #2 for sure) but might not be our daily driver 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
Thank you for your review. I had 2 original Dumpster Divers and a I had high expectations for this model. It is not as fat as the original one, and your comment that it looks more like a Sampler, it’s spot on. I surfed it In all round mush to 6 foot plus in the Maldives, and the extra volume on the front foot made it, a wonderful, forgiving, magic board. The best Dane Reynolds years were on this board(way before he was also a surf dad). I do believe that this model in spinetek/xtr (which wasn’t available back then) might be the best choice (although very expensive)- It’s good to hear honest reviews on the web. Keep going!
@Tiaguini78 so rad to hear you’ve already had it in the Maldives 🤤 yeah we’re hearing the Spine-Tek XTR combo might be the magic sauce we need! 🪄 Sounds like you and Brother #2 are part of the same FFF club (front foot forward) and might be the type of surfer this board is best for. Thanks for watching some average surf dads struggle in CA slop, we appreciate the support! 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
@@greenroomsurfreviews Definitely a front foot guy. You guys have been in Waco for a week, I have been to Maldives, I guess it’s a tie. Hope you guys have some good waves for the rest of the summer. Greetings from Portugal!
Good review guys. Although I really liked the Sampler, coming from that board to the DD2 was a whole new level and a different board. The manoeuvrability of the DD2 is way better. This is my favourite board now of all time and the best board I have ever surfed, better than the org DD, Sampler, org Neckbeard/Neckbeard 2 etc. I've been surfing it for the last 4+ months. It's true CI widened the nose and tail but they reduced the overall width so it is relative and has a straighter outline with more rocker than the org DD and more single concave with a flat deck. There is an adjustment factor which took me about 3 surfs to get use to for this board. Fins are definitely important (I agree with @spiffjiff05) and I found after trying quite a few that normally the Hayden Shapes HS2 (medium) pivot fins so far to be the best unless it is fast/steep. Futures have stopped making these fins but you can still find them in shops or 2nd hand or try other pivot fins that are based on your weight (don't go too big in fins either for this board). The AM fins (AM2 and AM1) I found were too tight and even with the smaller centre fin they are too raked (so wouldn't recommend the Dane fins either which are nearly the same thing and even Neutral fins seem too raked for this board). I'm going to try the Tokoro fins next which have a 9 degree cant angle instead of the normal 6.5 and these might be good also but on bigger days when the HS fins are too fast/pivoty. In terms of size you could choose a board close to your normal volume but you could go a bit shorter on this board, for me I'll probably get another one for Aussie summer time later in the year prob around 5'7, I currently have a 5'8 which is my winter board for when I wear a wetsuit). Awesome board.
@damienphelan666 rad to hear, thanks man!! Let us know if you find the magic combo. In the meantime, if you know of a loving home with better than average surf, let us know. We might be looking to re-home so this guy can get the attention he deserves🙌🏼 we have a few other boards to test out, don’t want his best years to be wasted in a garage! 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
@@greenroomsurfreviews I'd love to but I think freight to the land of Oz would cost more than the board 😁
Just to add another point of view, I think the board would be a lot more livelier with spinetek/xtr and ridden at least 4 inches shorter than your height. I got a custom 6'0 in xtr that i took to waco and surf locally in Orange County and been really liking it. I could see how it would feel more like a HPSB in dims closer to your height and in PU. DD2 has replaced my gremlin and is now my daily for home. Hopefully you guys can try different fins as might feel a little tight with raked fins.
Nice @spiffjiff05! Yeah we’ve had the Fishbeard and Rocket Wide in Spine-Tek and loved them both! You’re not the only person who was recommended the Spine-Tek/xtr combo for the DD2 🙏🏼 we’ll add it to the list! 🙌🏼
agree on this. definitely want a more upright fin on. this board is reckon.
@gnarlycharlie69 we’ll give it a try!! 🙌🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
Sounds like an HPSB
Probably a HPSB for a average joe
Yeah it’s definitely closer to a HPSB than the original was 🙌🏼
Self raising flour ?😂
I used buckwheat (gluten free 😉) so I’m sure that would work too
❤
🎉🎉
Mind has been blown
Thanks guys, but why do you use millimeters for thickness but freedom units for temperature? Now I still don't have a clue which one to buy😂😂😢
Chris! Hahaha-you bring up great points. We are located in the U S of A so that’s where the freedom units come in. I gather the wetsuit industry uses metric units simply because the thicknesses are so small. Instead of saying .12 inches thick, they say 3 millimeters. Anywho, just figure out how cold your water is and then match that to any wetsuit water temperature chart and it’s hard to go wrong. Check out Buell Surf if you’re looking for a more affordable price and bonus if you wait for their July 4 wetsuit sale! Best of luck 🤞🏼!!
Y’all should do the inferno FT !
It’s on the list! Dan’s inferno 72 has made me reconsider my life choices. Sharp eye is on our radar for sure!
Pyzel mini ghost would do the job this didn’t do for you guys, for the waves I see the happy everyday and those boards can’t surf a wave above 2 foot without skipping out it’s so heavy and punchy
I haven’t dabbled with any Pyzel surfboards yet but I’d be seriously interested to try them out. I have two of the models that I’ve been 👀
If you could take any pyzel/CI model back to Waco, what would it be?
Speaking for brother number 2, I think the rocket wide would be so fun! Even more amazing if I could take one in spine tek. I think a 2+1 set up there would be insane. You get the hold but easy release when you want to blow the tail out. Also, the RW is shorter and curvier so it can be surfed in the pocket in tighter arcs. Lastly it’s specifically designed for smaller waves and with the spine tek “pop” and extra buoyancy, think it would be a perfect fit. The flat earth would be my backup board if the RW broke.
Since you already tried and tested the 5'8' happy everyday ,does the 5'7'' flat earth have the similar rail thickness? Thank you guys for those real reviews! Keep them coming!
Hey Goodtimes! From my recollection, they did have similar rail thicknesses. Even their volumes were close to identical. I found that they performed very differently which I’m sure is attributed to the winged pin tail amongst other factors. Both were fun but the flat earth was more versatile and could be surfed more freely in the smaller stuff. Hope that helps and nice to know the videos are appreciated by other people besides our mother. ;-)
