"Hurricane" was composed by Paul Madeira Mertz who was a jazz pianist and arranger who had first worked with Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey in 1922 in their first orchestra The Wild Canaries. Mertz had been a pianist in the Bix Beiderbecke band The Rhythm Jugglers in the 1920s and had worked in Hollywood on film music from the 1930s to the 1960s. He had played on the 1925 jazz classic "Davenport Blues" by Bix (and featuring Tommy Dorsey on trombone) in 1925 released on Gennett Records. Mertz also played piano on the 1927 Grammy Hall of Fame inductee "Singin' the Blues" by Frankie Trumbauer and his Orchestra featuring Bix Beiderbecke, Eddie Lang, and Jimmy Dorsey. Mertz also wrote "Hurricane" in 1927 which Miff Mole recorded. He was also a member of the Jean Goldkette Orchestra in the 1920s. Born in Reading, PA, he died in Los Angeles in 1998. "I'm Glad There is You" (which he co-wrote with Jimmy Dorsey in 1941) is one of the greatest jazz and pop standards of the 20th century. Mertz deserves a shout out.

Bunny left the world too soon, but he left a lot of good records in that short time.

I have to check out the difference between this version with his Boys and the other one his Orchestra.

Pops is the best. His trumpet and vocal solos defined seminal jazz in the 1920s. Every musician since then owes Louis Armstrong a big debt. A rhythm master. A genius. New Orleans home grown, but destined for the entire world. You know Pops is jamming with the best right now. Showing all how it is done. The most important American musician in history. Bravo.
