Acoustic Guitar Condenser Microphone Shootout - Austrian Audio OC16 vs CC8
Please visit our website for your gear needs www.maarsmusic.com
Markus & Shon are back with pair of tempting, well priced and pristine sounding Austrian Audio condenser microphones -- the CC8 (small diaphragm) and OC16 (large diaphragm). We grabbed a Martin & Co. OM-28 and a classical guitar too, plugged the @AustrianAudio microphones into an @ArturiaOfficial MiniFuse 2 audio interface and had some fun recording this acoustic guitar focused microphone shootout for you.
You'll hear each audio sample twice: first with the OC16, followed by the same performance as it was captured by the CC8.
No compression nor equalization or other tone altering software was applied to microphone audio. We kept it as raw as possible and you'll hear what these microphones sound like on a medium sized acoustic guitar played finger style, strummed with a pick and also some classical style playing.
Our first impression is that both of these microphones do a great job of describing an acoustic guitar with precision, clarity and dynamics. The microphone preamps of the Arturia AudioFuse 2 worked well -- there was plenty of gain and lots of headroom. You don't need an expensive preamp in order to enjoy these microphones (though preamps with flavour don't hurt at all either).
Maar's Music has been an Austrian Audio dealer for several years and we're quite thrilled at the growth of the product line and the service and support offered by @KorgEriksonMusic (Austrian Audio's excellent distributor to dealers like Maar's Music)

Austrian Audio may seem like the new kid on the block in the microphone and headphone market, but this isn't the case when it comes to world class engineering & product design expertise!
A little more background information about Austrian Audio:
Following the closure of the AKG offices in Vienna, we set out to create something new, challenging, and respectful to our heritage. Opening our doors in July 2017, Austrian Audio was born.
Armed with a wealth of experience and a mission to make passion heard, our team of experts were ready to take on the industry giants by striving to produce products that embody the sound and engineering excellence one would expect from a company with our history.
We started with a core team of 22 former AKG personnel from management, acoustics, electronics, test and measurement, mechanical design, RF/wireless, and software and firmware - and are continuing to grow.
We may be relatively new, but the skill, knowledge, and tradition lives on at Austrian Audio, backed by over 350 years of cumulative engineering experience. And we’re not only focused on heritage: keep an eye on where our journey is taking technology, audio, and us!

    Interesting. I would not use the small diaphragm condenser by itself as-is unless you just want to add high-pitched rhythmic strumming in the background of a track. As it is currently positioned, away from the soundhole, it doesn't have enough body for individual melodic lines in solo.A lot depends on the sound's place in the mix of course.

  • @alann5003

    I like the boomier sound of the Martin. More like a conventional size guitar yet still comfortable to play due to it's smaller size. Taylor for me easier to play due to it's lower action all the way up the neck. Both nice guitars.

    • @rorymccallanproject9887
      @rorymccallanproject9887 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@fredflinstone3173 I've had mine going on a year in January. I replaced the saddle and nut with bone (about $30.00 in materials, plus my labor) and experimented with strings several times, most recently with Elixir PB Nanos and the thing is quite a bit warmer, more balanced, and bigger sounding than it came stock (but it's still not a real loud guitar). Once it was set up to my liking, the playability is quite easy and the pickup does its job well and I've played it quite a bit, gigging with it at bars, restaurants and busking. It works great. This guitar has some special kind of mojo in it that I've never heard in a Godin/Seagull/ etc; it still sounds like a Godin, maybe it's the all solid mahogany, with BOOK-MATCHED top AND back with rosewood fretboard and bridge, but I'm pretty smitten, I have to say., I also changed out the bridge pins to solid boxwood-don't know that it did much, but it looks better than plastic.🙂I would say give it a whirl. I was able to try mine out at a local store, and it was actually the model they had out on the floor, so that helped in sealing the deal. You may not have to do all the tweaking I did, but even if you do, it's not that extensive or expensive and I'm more than pleased with the results.

    Why does it seem like he only makes a very limited number of guitars? I find it so hard to find any of these guitars anywhere. And it's like when I do find one it's not the one I would prefer. Like he only makes about 10 of each different model. I had a gs mini in mahogany which I ended up selling and somewhat regretting. My local store was a big Taylor partner so very little to no Martin guitars. Anyway after trying to find another small guitar to sit on the sofa and noodle with I drove around 100 miles to the next city which had a store that specialised in Martin. Needless to say I’ve never played a Martin before. I picked up the dreadnaught jr wow all I can say is it’s the sound I’ve always had in my head of what an acoustic should sound like. I also tried a d-28 and d-18 because I drove all that way I had to try the big expensive ones right? 😂 yes the money for those guitars is insane but after a few open chords letting them ring out I can honestly say I think it’s worth it… anyway I took the Martin jr home because I have more sense than money! 😂…. In summary I am now a Martin fan and if you can try a guitar in person even if it’s a little further than you’d like to go, do it you won’t regret it!

    • @maarsmusic
      @maarsmusic 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for sharing your story -- they're both excellent guitars with their own feel and voice! The Djr. feels a little more spacious on the fingerboard and has a familiar (dreadnaught like) sound -- all you need to do now is try the Martin 000c-Jr! We might do a video featuring that one next!

    • @maarsmusic
      @maarsmusic 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We pondered that, but since their scale lengths differ (resulting in different tension of the "same strings), we decided to leave the factory strings on these guitars assuming that both Martin & Taylor are more than capable of recommending strings that they feel are ideal for their respective guitars. We'll go with Tommy Emmanuel's idea that you have to find the best string for yourself and each guitar individually.

      Thank you kindly! The idea was to have a demo that would be simple to reproduce (simple mic, amp and guitar signal chain) -- having said that, the Sonzera 20 dirty channel isn't getting much love :( here!!!

    • @maarsmusic

      What's your go to amp for distortion? Part of the idea of the demo is that it could be easily duplicated at a PRS dealer with a simple amp / guitar setup, rather than a long, idiosyncratic signal chain. Do you like the clean tone?

      @@pino_7428 the mic position was good and the sound in this video is meant to be a relatively reproducible -- SM57 style mic (which is a bit forward / abrasive, but a commonly used raw tone). Without context, it's often difficult to judge the final sound as it would sit in a recording anyway. Thanks for sharing your feedback and preferred signal chain. We have a couple of additional PRS vids coming up and may decide to use a Marshall DSL 40 or UA Lion directed instead for the next tone!

      It's definitely darker than your typical S style guitar and the tone controls have a lot of range. Does it ever get really bright? Maybe not, but strings and pick choice alone can make a difference here too. Maybe an SE - S Style shootout is in order: NF3 vs. Silver Sky

      Gear is so subjective. People make the silver sky sound good but I didn't like it when I owned it. Probably because the mayer specs to the neck and the single coils had the bright thin sound like other ones do. The only single coil like pickups I've liked were the duckbucker set whatever they were which were like mini humbuckers so this guitar appeals to me. I'll probably try it out eventually.

      Thanks for watching and writing! What's your usual preference when it comes to electric models and pickups? Positions 2 and 4 land in the Stratocaster tone spectrum (albeit without the single coil hum) and 1, 3 & 5 kind of bring to mind a hum-less P90 style pickup to our ears....
