Nice!🎉
Just wanted to note that I spread the word on co2 the last 2 yrs since I've been in giants and 2 very specific growers, Jim sherwood and russ pugh caught on and both used co2 last yr, they have both grown for 20yrs give or take, russ had grown a 2000lb fruit one time prior and sherwood was at 1997 until 2024 when they both used co2... they are both top tier growers, they both grew personal bests last yr by over 300lbs each, Jim grew a 456lb personal best! They grew the same as yrs prior but added in co2 burners... co2 is key to growing a 3000lb pumpkin! Basically we need to immolate the pot growers to an extent. I think 1500-2000ppm of co2 is about right. Give or take a bit, Noone really knows what pumpkin plants can consume as very few growers have used it and even fewer growers have used it properly.. I'd say the Patton bros are one of the very few that know exactly how to use co2 the best within the giant world.. imagine a tomatoe plant with added co2... the hard part is having a climate controlled greenhouse so that you can keep the co2 at the correct level through the day. You don't want drastic up and downs of co2, you need it to stay constant for the very best results. Also how you manage the co2 is key, where you put your sniffer if key, at what hight and in what spot within the greenhouse is key.. I think pumpkin growers are the only ones within the giant world to use co2 so far... imagine how big the other giants could be.. higher co2 means more nutrient uptake.. I spread these words in hopes we hit 3k here soon! Once the right grower gets an enclosed greenhouse with an ac system using co2 we will hit 3k.. let's do this boys! Who's up for the challange!!?? Co2 burners are fairly inexpensive, 2-500$, the burners will also heat up your grow space in early season.. minisplit ac systems will keep your hoop house cool in the hot part of yr..
Thoughts on CO2 reducing the amount of growing days..........
@MobyMikePumpkins I would think it would extend them if anything. Check out the Patton bros, they've used co2 for a wile in pumpkins. They consistently grow 2500lbers. Pretty sure their fruit are all over 100days old.
Nice of you to chauffeur the old fella around town on your day off.
Hehe! His wife needed a day off, so I agreed to watch him.
👍🎃
55 minutes? I need to watch this around 9 pm...help put me to sleep!
Nice video! Look forward to seeing both of you in Green Bay!
I will be there!
Great video! Made my commute to work this morning a little easier!
Glad you enjoyed it!
A biostimulant is a substance or microorganism that enhances plant growth, development, or stress resistance without being a traditional fertilizer or pesticide. They work by improving plant processes such as nutrient uptake, soil health, or resilience to environmental stress like drought or extreme temperatures. Biostimulants can include natural extracts, amino acids, humic substances, seaweed extracts, and beneficial microbes. They're used to boost crop yields, quality, and overall plant health, often in sustainable farming practices. 😂
Do you keep them in the hoop house the whole season? And what do you use to cover your hoop houses?
No eventaully they come out usualley a 3rd week in may
You guys are awesome. Great video
First year grower here. This was awesome info! My? Is, once plants go in hoop house, what fertilising should be done, and how often? People say fert. Should be in soil.i get that, seems like pushing and watching plant is what growers do. Push with what? Calcium nitrate, 10 0 0, 10 10 10, nothing until out of hoop house? Watched a lot of videos, no one really talks about it.
There are lotsbof things u can use, alot of times ill use a miracle grow type product lightly, others may use humic, kelp or amino acids
@MobyMikePumpkins thanks, low slow and steady then
All time spent with Jim Ford is time well spent! Thanks Jim and Mike.
Jim ford is a freaking leggand!! The bit about growing up in a middle class family was freaking amazing!! Stupid kamala!! Iiiiiiidiot!! Lol!!
👍🎃
You are late to the party , I'll be pollinating the middle of this week 😅
Really cool experiment!
I can’t grow giant pumpkins yet as I live in a rental home, but I am so excited to plant my pumpkin seeds as soon as the cold weather is done!
What is the soil mix and any additives?
The Roots look good but my question is. Would you consider that rootbound or okay to plant? First-year grower here
Its a little bound but there is no problem planting that.
@MobyMikePumpkins good to know and thank you for responding.
Cool stuff! I grabbed some giant watermelon seeds from a watermelon that was cut open at Stillwater for the spectators to see and try. Thinking I will plant one this year, but we will see if I have room (and time) for it.
Good luck!
@ Thanks! You as well!
🎉🎉🎉
very sick! i wonder if for a pumpkin a network of smaller reservoirs for each node or every other could work well, having some nodes in dirt could buffer the plant during water changes possibly also
Its been discussed........
@@MobyMikePumpkins i'll be watching!
Do you have to use those space age sunglasses when you’re working with dangerous lightbulbs for growing giant pumpkins?
Super interesting! Thank you for sharing. Did you pollinate her yourself?
Nope
Super cool setup and grow
❤can’t wait for this year!
Drip clean will also help your roots stay nice and white! You should build a screen for your roots to grow on so they spread out nicely inside the tank.. just an idea..
Yeah i need something to keep them spread out, I will look into drip clean
I'd bet the sweet spot for watermelons is actually between 75 and 85.. could be wrong who knows. Only one way to find out! This will be my 3rd yr growing giants. I've grown herb for about 20yrs now tho. Had a garden since I was 10. I love all your experiments!! I love that you break out of the norms and do your own thing!
Air temp they like even more than that, root Temp no, we want to stay under 70-71 degrees or problems will arise with almost any plant
@MobyMikePumpkins idk... we get good air temps where I live but our soil temps never get above 70 here and the nw doesn't grow big watermelons... only where the soil temp is around 80 do we see the biggest watermelons... drip clean will prevent you have having root issues! Keeps alge down! Also keeps all your lines clean from buildup.. I'll probably use a sprayer setup inside my tank so that my roots aren't submerged in water but stay wet, just like a clone machine!! If you do submerge your roots you need to be able to pump the water out a few times a day so they get air! No hydro ever keeps roots submerged everyday all day!!
@harveycardwell7274 dwc keeps roots submerged all day.......thats what I use
@MobyMikePumpkins yang not the best.. Noone grows like that anymore.. it's rots the roots. Very few people grow hydro anymore even.. misting the roots works the very best of any hydro.. idk why I'm saying this tho, you do you lol.
@MobyMikePumpkins dwc is like having a plant is soaking soil all day every day... think about it mike.. that would also rot the roots.. dwc was a fad that ended very quickly! You won't find a single commercial grower using dwc. Very fed hydro growers at all anymore.. hydro in general sucks but it's fun either way.. misting is by far superior. But again idk why I'm saying this haha. I tend to tell people the truth even if it means they do better than I do..
Watermelons love warmer temps, pot plants don't necessarily love higher temps. I'd use drip clean to keep alge growth down! I may even give this a shot thos yr for fun! If you do it I'll do it as well so we can compare notes!
I will be doing it again for sure
@MobyMikePumpkins all right then, I'll join in with the fun!
Can’t wait to see how this year goes!
Nice I'm in UK gonna grow some pumpkin this year a little patch for my son john boy😊
Good luck!
Great video. I have tried for years to grow pumpkins and They start very well but ALWAYS get a white mold and the plant dies before any pumpkin can mature. Any tricks go prevent this?
Where are growing at?
@MobyMikePumpkins Hales Corners Wisconsin (Milwaukee)
Ok so now that we ruled out that your not growing in a rain forest or something. Does your soil drain well? What time of year is this occurring? How many hours a day does you patch receive sunlight?
@MobyMikePumpkins Dryer topsoil on a slight hill with clay a few feet down but drains well. Probably 8-10 hours sun and I usually start them inside and plant mid June. The powdery mildew starts when the plant is established and 3-4 feet long.
@Burgletrouser eagle 20 can keep powdery mildew at bay if used before that plant gets infected baf
Good video. I like the way you explain everything; very clear.
Thankyou!
Great video Mike!
Thanks!
