    Good tips but how can playing with the speakers on with Bluetooth off use more battery than headphones using Bluetooth? Are you using dongle or even the 3.5mm jack? In my experience the Bluetooth off always helps with battery life.

    Some of these tips are just kind of bad. Specifically, hard limiting the processor speed and the governor changes. Linux already has pretty good scheduling, and schedutil is optimized to only adjust clock speed as needed and provide the minimum needed for performance. Meaning basically, just leave schedutil on and leave it alone. You don't need to adjust the clocks manually because schedutil governor will do this automatically. The undervolting advice is great though, and definitely a good tip for both battery life and reducing heat/fan noise.

      Thank you for your comment! I appreciate you pointing out a potential flaw in my video! I did thorough testing with the options before making a video, and consistently got less power when using the 'conservative' governor. I didn't do any research regarding the power governors or what they actually do behind the scenes, and I 100% should have done that before telling everyone else to use these settings. All of this was based on my own testing and what worked for my deck. You're also correct that manually setting clock speed after setting the governor to powersave or conservative is a bit over the top and probably not needed. Yet again the only reason I got to that conclusion was because of my testing, and manually setting the clock after adjusting the governor gave less power draw. Even if it was only 0.2 W less. I really appreciate you pointing out things in my video, and taking the time to leave a comment to help me improve! If there's anything else I'd love to hear also!

    I play with my charger on all the time does that ruins the battery? It doesn't go to 100% anymore and aparantely this is working as intended but I'm still worried

    • @RuinedByMaths
      @RuinedByMaths หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Steam Deck limits the charge amount to 80% if it is on while charging (I think). So if you're playing on the Steam Deck it will only charge until 80%. If you charge the deck while it is off, it usually charges to 100% although the light on the top goes green at 90%. As far as I know, playing with the charger in all the time does ruin the battery quicker!

    • @JuanPablo-nx2oc

      @@RuinedByMaths oh.... Since I got my steam deck I basically only play with my charger on since I heard there was no problem, something something once it charges completely it stop using the battery and uses the power from the outlet. Also it never goes beyond 89% and turned of or not I never see the green LED anymore using power tools plugin it seems I can force it to charge to 100 but I don't know if it is safe... I'll try later Also I use power tools so it stops charging when it gets to 90% since I heard this is good for the battery, also with or without the plugin/option on it doesn't charge to 100% anymore

    • @jeffg492
      @jeffg492 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Steam deck powers the SoC directly once the battery reaches 90%, and bypasses the battery if it's in use at that charge level. So no, you won't harm the battery playing while plugged in.

    • @PKD145
      @PKD145 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@JuanPablo-nx2oc I think there was a power tools update that fixed the stuck charge limit option. If it didn't for you for some reason, there is a command you can type in the console in desktop mode to change it back to 100%. To clarify something, having your battery at a lower percentage of max (like 90% as you do through Powertools) is better for battery longevity. That last 10% charge comes from increasing the cell voltage. I believe the typical max charge voltage is around 4.2-4.3v for a standard lithium ion battery. The higher voltage is less stable in the battery, leading to increased wear in storage. Most things that come with lithium ion batteries arrive charged to around 50-60% max charge. This is because that is the most stable cell voltage range, and it leads to noticeably less battery wear in storage. TLDR: Really any charge level between around 30-80% is very stable for a battery, and minimizes battery wear.

Good were the day where I had the patience to try single mhz difference in overclocking and undervolt to get maximum performance at minimum power usage. Now I refuse to do this. I do have to disagree on one point, though. Setting the resolution to something much lower and using FSR to make it look better is one of those things that works in theory and depends highly on someone's tolerance for blurry images. A lot of games that can do with that combo will not look any better than they would at full resolution, even with the graphics settings set lower. Not only that, but FSR makes UI elements blurry as well and depending on the game, it might be impossible to read anything. I recently tried Elite Dangerous on my Deck OLED and once I figured out that FSR is what made the interface impossible to read (even at 800p), playing it on the Deck went from 'it runs' to 'it's perfect' after I turned it off. Also, I think it's important to point out that tinkering with each game's graphics settings also plays a huge part in battery life. That and keeping an eye on the framerate. One thing I always do on my Deck with a game I know to be demanding on my gaming laptop is turning on the performance overlay and keeping an eye on the framerate. I play with the graphics settings first, see what the Deck can reasonably take to maintain 60 FPS on a quiet scene, then go for a spin. Two things to look for are whether the FPS drops too often from that stable 60 to anywhere below 58 (especially if it goes as low as high or low 40s) and whether the fans are going off. If the fans are going off too loudly and the FPS doesn't stay where you want it to, that means the system is attempting to draw more and more power to reach 60 FPS (or even 90 if that's what the game's aiming for). When this happens, I personally lock the FPS to 30 (cuz that's something I've learned to tolerate, having had weak office laptops for years), but you can lock it to the lowest value the Deck reaches. This will make the system draw less power, making the fans quieter and the device cooler, all of which will prolong battery life significantly. This is by far the most valuable tip anyone can give any Steam Deck user, and it's not something most people think of doing due to the bad habits instilled by PC gaming culture, beastly rigs, and the abhorrent act of locking the framerate so that it's stable and the system requires less power. I understand that a tower PC with the latest Intel CPU and a 4090 can afford inconsistent framerate where it fluctuates between 70-80 in an attempt to reach 120 or even 240, but that's not something smaller devices (e.g. gaming laptops and by extension the Steam Deck) can afford without compromising either battery life or even the components' life expectancy in the case of a gaming laptop that you keep plugged in at all times (which, btw, has the potential to ruin the battery, which brings many other problems until you remove said battery and no, replacing it won't help). So, uhm... Yeah. Steam Deck users, if you're reading this, learn to compromise on framerate so you can have a more stable experience and also significantly prolong you battery life in the process. Golden tip right there. Give it a shot with a demanding game and you'll see how stable it is, how quieter the fans are, and how longer your battery will last.

I even have a powerful car charger for my SD and some phones and it wasn't super expensive. For some reason I think I’m apart of the unpopular population of mainly playing mine docked with an Xbox controller. I love love love that I can play anything, like black ops 2 zombies or switch emulation (I already own all the games Nintendo) AND still use the pc portion of it. BUT, with being plugged in mostly and never being worried about the battery draining, are there any performance increases I can add? Or any resolution improvements I could change to? 720 isn’t the best on 4k, but hitting maybe 900p-1080p would be game changing. Thanks for the good tips as well!

      I honestly wish I could help, but I haven't looked into anything to do with more performance. I do know that if you have an original Steam Deck (not the OLED) you can do overclocking, so maybe that is a path you can go down. Although I can't really say how well it will work! Also, if I didn't have a PC already; I would 100% use the Steam Deck as my main PC! You just CANNOT beat it :)

    Thanks for these, I knew a lot of them, but they're basic tips that the crying and waning side of the community needed. As I see a lot of complaining from console players who are new to PC and expect high FPS COD on the go, which just isn't realistic and gave the Steam Deck a bad rep. I run both Windows + Bazzite on my Deck as I like my AAA multiplayer experience but also my SteamOS kick. Realistically, if people want battery life, people have to start realizing that Windows is basically a vampire to the battery and will suck it away. If the Windows aspect is needed, there's Clover and rEFInd for dual booting. rEFInd definitely the easier option in my eyes. I usually do a simple random boot into Bazzite for my daily fix, and crossover to Windows if I'm craving COD or Overwatch. The main tips I have for battery are similar to yours, but... ‣ Choose, SteamOS or Bazzite ‣ Learn your settings, if you're unsure (Hi-Tech Lo-Life) has numerous video in his series 'The Steam Deck Masterclass' that cover a lot of the basics in-depth ‣ Learn that 60FPS isn't needed for everything ‣ 960x600 or 864x540 are perfect for on the go use. Basically the same, though my rules for emulation of honestly a bit different. I think the Steam Deck is really a system of experimentation, and Bazzite on something like the ROG Ally can do the same and make the ROG Ally last just as long.
