I'm still deciding between relocating to Rapid City or Sioux Falls when I retire. I don't mind the harsh winters, what concerns me is how easy is to to get around the city of Sioux Falls?

This is the deal for me. I have lived in this Washington DC area for 20 years and have a nice house here: until a couple years ago. The water pipes on all floors burst while I was on a trip. I came home to garbage and mice everywhere so needed a room quickly while still working. Had to let the house go on sale. One of my coworkers, a lovely Filipina, (who makes wonderful pastries) said I should not think about retiring in the Philippines. She visits her hometown often and it is not good for expats now. She mentioned I should call a DC local hotel for a room. Stayed in the room for a couple months that became years after retiring, Still there now. I could have bought another house but would have sold the original had I seen this before. The monthly rate is covered by my pension payments and includes lots of benefits plus wireless connection. The only cost is the hotel bill and local taxes. In my case I should have sold the house earlier and ‘retired’ then. Now I’m looking for another home to settle in to keep my growing stash of goods. South Dakota, or South Carolina or where? I am committed to the local hotel for at least another four months. Regards

I grew up in Sioux Falls back in the 1970s...my Dad was transferred due to his job, otherwise we would have stayed. Currently living in the Twin CIties Metro and we visit Sioux Falls every few years as we have some family in the area just across the border in MN. Considering relocating/retiring there in the near future.

I'm afraid that by asking people from other places to move to S.D. you are certainly making S.D. just like other places. The main factor that makes S.D. different is its low population so not only are you bringing in more people, you are bringing them from the places you say they helped ruin, so I must question your motivation for wanting to increase the population there when you know that population IS the problem.

I grew up in SD. Winters seemed colder back then. It really isn’t that bad. If you want it somewhat milder, you can move to the “banana belt”, Rapid City.

A 48 hour test is essentially meaningless. If your readings are low you should do a 1 year or longer test. If it’s high after a week of testing, you should probably just get a mitigation system, not worth the risk.
