WORST PARTS of being an Occupational Therapist II ENDLESS EDUCATION
Today we are discussing the "negatives" or the sometimes least fun parts of being an occupational therapist. I hope this is helpful for students considering the profession or other health careers, as well as for fellow clinicians to know you're not alone :)
I'm Thalia and I am currently a Paediatric Occupational Therapist in Australia.

    This is a great video there is so much stigma around working in mental health as an occupational therapist. did any of your lecturers try to talk you out of mental health. When I started occupational therapy I wanted to do mental health. I had lecturers talk me out of working in mental health. Now as a new speech pathology student I can still work in mental health.

    interesting some members of the health care team underestimate how broad and complex speech pathology is. So I can relate to that.

    this is good to know. As a nurse I did not know a great lot about occupational therapy. Not great. Started the course was not suited to it. But I am going to be a speech pathologist. I did however have one really brilliant lecturer. Her name is KP. She is fantastic. Three of us nurses loved her and wanted to be like her. My friend joked that I latched on to her because she was caring like a nurse. She is every nurses dream OT to work for and with. Can you do a video shadowing a nurse that would be brilliant. That way you can see why nurses get so protective of their patients.

    Thanks for this video, it’s so helpful to hear from Aussie OTs! What would you say is the ratio of non-paper work to paper work on a typical day? Thank you so much, I’m looking to become an OT but there’s not a lot of this kind of info out there :)

    • @EndlessEducationOT

      Really can depend on the speciality and setting you go into! For me in my private practice (community) paediatrics I need to do session notes for each of my sessions, emails to schools/other therapists, at least yearly progress reports and sometimes home programs and letters of support for other items. I'd say roughly 30% is admin time and then block out extra time as needed to catch up on bigger reports. In my other role there's much more case coordination including paper work and meetings needed for each client. Thanks for your support and all the best for the future 😊

    How’s the job market after occupational therapy

    • @EndlessEducationOT
      @EndlessEducationOT 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would totally depend where you live and I can only speak from my experience here in Australia. There seem to always be jobs to apply for however, if you have interest in a specific niche field it may take a little longer. I regularly see jobs for paediatrics, adult mental health and age care- there are probably others as well - those are the ones I personally see a posted regularly.

      Hi, This is really specific to the university you go to. It changed every year. Lots of students at my university had part time jobs- however, not during full time block placements. Check the university calendars for specific holidays each year. Usually a large block over christmas and a month in the middle of the year.

    This is a great video! My question is how does OT overlap with psychology? Especially when it comes to emotional regulation, motivation and organisation skills, self care, etc

    • @samd77666
      @samd77666 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess at what point, would a child need a psychologist as opposed to an OT?

    • @EndlessEducationOT
      @EndlessEducationOT 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Firstly, great question Sam!! There are probably multiple factors and versions of this answer. In the developmental/disability paediatric scope of practice for OT's (in my experience- not answering from my previous child and youth mental health job perspective) emotional regulation is a very common goal that we work on! Speech Pathologists can also (again in my exp) work on emotional literacy and vocabulary. I think as OT's we are uniquely positioned to understand engagement and motivation which are driving factors in working towards any goal especially with kids. That's not to say psychologists or other allied health don't have an understanding of these factors as well but i know its a core part of our approach to therapy/intervention (and what we do well). I would say when there are specific mental health goals or surrounding more specific mental health concerns e.g. depression, OCD, eating disorders rather than more general developmental goals of emotional regulation - then I would want a psych involved/or mental health service. Self care is typically OT as that is concerning occupational performance and engagement (also a common area addressed in mental health OT field incl. adults). Executive functioning (incl organisation) - I notice a cross over of this with psych and OT- families can present to both professionals for support with this area. I definitely don't have the perfect answer and to be honest I've found most allied health professions overlap with at least one of the other professions in some areas. Also need to consider in specific positions, families may not have access to the other professions so therefore you are more likely to support them with these crossover fields. (hope this made some sense!)

      Hi there, unfortunately i didn't study in the UK so I can't recommend a particular University. I'd recommend reaching out to those who are in the UK (if anyone from the UK reads this feel free to reply as well!), doing your own research and contacting the universities yourself. I'm also unsure what you are referring to by "health care set up". Do you mean owning your own health clinic/practice?

      @brigittealexander1967 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi I am also in Australia. I started occupational therapy but moved into speech pathology. My favourite teacher is a mental health occupational therapist from England. She did a Masters degree in Cognitive behavioural therapy. Not sure of the exact title. But it was a two year degree. She did it through Manchester University. Not sure if the degree is still running as it was 20 years ago. See if you can do it online. Most occupational therapists do a short course in CBD. But because she did a two year masters she seemed to be a fantastic clinician. Well done on wanting to do a Masters degree. people are complex and might not feel like telling you what is wrong with them.

      Endless Education Wow! Alright, i haven’t done Telehealth but it seems like hell. I work in a secure unit and my clients couldn’t be isolated anywhere else than jail so we were forced to stay open. It is good to still have face to face but in my setting all external leaves got revoked and still are even tho Canberra is pretty much back to normal

    Hi Thalia, Your videos have been very helpful and in a way, eye opening to me with regards to what an OT actually does in different settings as my teachers have been very vague about this and never managed to get to the point. Their explanations have been a bit all over the place and haven't been as precise as yours haha (I'm an OT student from Germany so the way of teaching might differ). Aaaanyway, I really enjoy watching your videos and getting an insight into the Australian OT world :) Greetings from Germany:)
