How to Assemble a Four Piece Celtic Paddle
Kind of a slap dash video but full of important content. Love the four piece paddles, generally all I use.

Way too much work a heel hook is easier amd faster
This is an adaptive move. If you were teaching regularly, especially amongst people with challenges, you’d find a reason to use this. Additionally, American Canoe instructors are required to know how to do this and teach it. I’m an instructor trainer. My candidates often refer to this video before they take a workshop with me. That being said-- I’ve only used this method myself on a surf ski in rough water when I was alone and having shoulder trouble so I couldn’t cowboy. And there’s no heel hooking a ‘ski, or for that matter, a sit on top. Your point--that it takes time and effort is valid but misses all the reasons we might want to use and teach this.
Thmx. That helps. I also have short arms
You are a very good teacher....I wish I could find one like you!
Wow, thank you! I would love to teach rolling everywhere!
Do you know what the closest RAL colours would be to the hatch covers? Particularly the blue?
All you have to do is mount a rescue ladder in your kayak and mount a rope on the opposite side, run the rope under your kayak and pull tension on it as you climb the lader,I do it all the time, because I use my kayak for diving,no problem
@@gunslinger9560 lolz. ACA instructors are required to know how to use, and teach, a stirrup reentry. Plus this little gadget fits in a life jacket pocket.
See how the guy’s left leg is falling out of the boat at 0:52? Does he just need bigger thigh hooks? That happens to me, too.
Yes that boat definitely doesn’t fit him well. I believe the boat doesn’t have thigh braces at all actually.
Thank you 🙏🏻
I used to do that type of self rescue. But I’ve broken one paddle and when getting into the kayak and retrieving the paddle behind you, under the deck lines, you lose some of your balance. I tipped over again doing this in choppy waters. It was years since I had to do a self rescue (rolling now) but I teach it a lot. I do not teach putting the paddle under the deck lines but only tell my students about it. But still it’s many times the easiest self rescue. Nice video btw.
Thanks. Many people with smaller hands and/or adaptive paddlers need to use the deck lines. It’s an option, certainly not a mandatory one.
Can't wait to do this on Tuesday with my new boat!
Why do you place the boat upside down? Isn’t it better for the boat to be resting on its hull to put the load on the stronger hull rather than the deck?
Aerodynamics, the shape of the boat, and Nigel Dennis recommends transporting deck down.
@@capitalcitykayak thankyou cheers

In a lake, calm like that, you'll never capsize. And in a lake you can capsize in, you can never make an reentry this way. Completly theoretically and unrealistic.
It’s really tough to film in real conditions. Additionally, the well-enabled would not use this rescue at all. I never have, for example. However, students struggling with self rescue have and do use it , and appreciate it.
The reason you practise manoeuvres like this is so you at least have an idea what to do. After the fact is not a time to start wondering-- "what do I do now" Like all learning you have to start from a safe basic stance where you have a chance to actually learn before progressing to more complex situations..
Good example of why we practice. And, it is good to have a solid roll b4 going into surf/rough conditions.
Glad you both escaped this near-death situation. Where is the Coast Guard when you need them??? 😆
Lolz. Yeah, it was the quick sand that got us. We were afraid someone would call the rescue team on the island and then they’d get stuck in the sand too. We’d all just be standing knee deep in sand until the tide turned and we either floated out or became permanent features of the shoal.
Thanks for this video and the comments, Randi; very helpful! LOVE the puppy cameos at the end, lol! At around 9:45, you briefly mentioned "there are some things about [the low-volume Petrel] that make it less of an all-around boat" -- I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts about what those things are. (If you'd rather I shoot you an email for that conversation, I can certainly do that.)
It's wonderful to be so earnest in diagnosing and critiquing your own rolls. Always have a plan B when your roll fails you is what I take away from the video. Thanks!
What skirt is that, that comes off with one hand?
Reed, Deck B, fits the Petrel very well, and as you can see, comes off without too much struggle. The most water tight deck on the market. I sell them, but I’m not exaggerating for the purpose of a quick sell.
@@capitalcitykayakDid you find out if the Petrel Play takes the same size?
@@suebrown8129, yes Reed Deck B, same same.
@@capitalcitykayak Thanks - ordered one off your website.
Great video! You brought up some really good points. I had the same tendency to push up the off water hand as well. It is super valuable to have these sessions to practice and pin point those little deviations in technique.
I have watched many, many Roll videos, but this is one of the most instructive, explained and shown exceptionally clearly! I have been kayaking for almost ten years and I have never practiced Roll, this is one of the videos that most encourages me to do it. Thank you !!
La conocí en un vídeo de Turning Point Boatworks y hoy encuentro su canal, que me ha gustado mucho.👏👏👏 Me suscribo ! Saludos desde Argentina. I met her in a Turning Point Boatworks video and today I found her channel, which I really liked.👏👏👏 I suscribe ! Greetings from Argentina.
Does Reed put their relief zipper down low enough, or did you have to special order it to be lower than it would be for a man? I've heard that Kokatat will put it extra low for FUD use, but I'd really like to get a Reed drysuit.
Reed naturally puts their's lower, on all suits. It's one of the reasons we prefer Reed in most cases. Frankly, my husband struggles to use the standard location on Kokatat suits, and he's a boy. ZIPPER TOO HIGH Kokatat!
Talk about playing in the surf. Glad all are safe. Good learning experience
Yes, thanks, it sure was.
Cat-butt approved! :D These look intriguing.
Lol😅
Those yellow hatch covers though!!💛I just ordered a set on the CCK website!!😄 Great unboxing! (ok, back to work now 🙄)
OMG, Randi, I had no idea I almost took you out with my paddle on that final attempt!! :D :D I will try not to cause such mayhem next week. ;) Thanks again to you and Rob for all your patience and help!
It's really interesting to see how my ugly roll compares to all the other prettier ones. I'm not sure I've ever looked that closely but my hand position is definitely different then the better looking rolls.
Always learning right?
Thanks, I am curious how that stiffer carbon compares as far as resiliency to impacts - would it have less “give” and therefore more brittle or higher risk of integrity loss?
This is a good question. So far we've only had the pair of basalt Innegra boats for demo. They are extremely tough. Our carbon Petrel Play is due out of the mold in the next couple of weeks. I'll get back to this idea after we've thoroughly put it thru the wringer.
WOW! This is so super awesome!!! Listening to the feedback shared in all of the examples is so helpful to understand - especially with the slowmotion and pen graphics!!! So excited to work on the T-Rex arms!
Thanks for the feedback. The slowmo definitely makes the arm extension very visible. More to work on…
Very nice examples
Please excuse my sniffling. I clearly need an antihistamine.
This was quite literally one of my first rolls
First roll right hand way way to high. No real sweep just a push almost straight down. Paddle dived way under. In real waves this roll would fail. To say Nice is NOT helping him. Say hey good you made it up BUT do this differently. On the slow mo one the sweep and paddle position much better BUT at then end his head still doesn't stay down long enough. He SITS UP he should slide onto back deck with head. He sits up with kayak still way leaned over still . So I strongly disagree with what you say. The blade should sweep forward after he is up not just held out at side. Big water demands perfection in what your doing. You said he is experienced roller. Doesn't look so to me. I see people come up in a pool every time with poor technique yet fail in real water waves.
Yeah he’s quite experienced. When I say “nice” I’m actually commenting on getting him on video. 😅 He’s not a Greenland roller, so that’s not his stick, and that’s not his boat either. But I’ll make sure he sees your comments. Feedback is always useful, every time.
Not a kayaker but I stumbled across this video just out of curiosity the man’s kayak appeared to be a lot smaller than the lady with the green kayak. Is it easier to roll in a smaller kayak than it is a large one?
Yes, lower volume boats can be easier to roll. Apples to apples, though, her boat has less volume than his. His is longer by a foot, and has many more gallons of air in it.
This is a common surfski rescue technique.
Interesting, but too slow in dynamic conditions?
Indeed, I wouldn't use this rescue in waves unless ALL else had failed. It's really a rescue for adaptive paddlers who need tools to get back in.
Man do I remember that paddle. It got really cold towards the end and we had ice crystal's hitting us in the eyeballs at the end. Wished I had brought some clear glasses! But it was a ton of fun with some excellent condition and great company! And of course good food afterwards.
Lovin it
Two days ago I practiced self rescue using a paddle float and stirrup, with my new Dagger Stratos. I have a piece of webbing tied around the left side seat support inside the cockpit. When I pull it out, it hangs down right next to the seat. So when I step up with my left foot in the stirrup, I can get directly into the seat facing forward. Perhaps the design and construction of other kayaks won't allow installing a webbing loop this way. But if your boat has a suitable piece of superstructure, it's worth considering. Then your stirrup is always ready for use. I also use a foam paddle float, not an inflatable. So the entire process is faster than the part shown here!
Muy interesante
will this work for a sit on top kayak as well?
YES!!
In cold rough water the hands only last a few minutes. Keeping track of what goes where in realistic conditions that would cause a wet exit, this is probably not going to work. No deck load and rough conditions I'd go for the cowboy scramble.

I agree totally, I tried fiddling around with a float in small enough waves and everything was much more difficult to do. The re-entry has too many small steps. Realistically you want one or two big swooping movements that get you back in, otherwise you’ll be losing balance. A solid roll, or re-entry and roll would probably suit more in choppy conditions. I have yet to see good use of the paddle float. I find it hard to picture in rough conditions where even if you got back in, you then have to deal with spray deck and taking the float off whilst also staying stable in choppy conditions. It all seems too messy and too much faffing about.
Can I see this unassisted in even 2' bay chop?

Nice video friend 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
No wind, no waves unrealistic demo.
This was for filming. Don't know how many times you tried to film something in even Level 3 conditions, but I HAVE. 'Nuff said.
The self rescue looked good! Definitely something I need to practice more of
Just get a 2 step rope boat ladder and tuck it under the bungee of your back deck. Simply loop it around the cockpit and you have the perfect ladder.
Thanks for this very good Idea👍
Really nice unveiling video Randi, much appreciated. Will have to get more Reed Chillcheater gear to you...
Can anyone tell me the length needed for a stirup
Hers is clearly way too long. Experiment with your boat size and leg length. In fact, if it doesn't wrap around the paddle (more than the minimum turn), there should be enough of a slight pulley effect to distribute some of the downward force on the near side around to the far side. Some folks claim they can do this so as to not even need the paddle float.
