awesome stuff folks!
Playing in a dumpy venue for 10 people is the epitome of the punk scene. A+ love it, wish I could have been there
Just abandoned the van. I woulda just fixed it
that second song is pretty bad ass
Here is the album this is the partial demo of. thebismarck.bandcamp.com/album/sweet-emotion
Glad to see this experience hasn’t changed a bit since I did it in the 1980s. Wonderful documentary!
Seattle is a dump
Also in the first story about the van in Montana, this was before cell phones and even pay phones were scarce in these rural ass areas.
Yes! I made this thing! I made this thing and I want to share it with you! Yes! It is a compulsion to play music! Watch until the end, very wise words are said!
1:41:00 it's survival like in jail. .
This is so accurate and awesome. Thank you.
17:13 was it hulk Hogan? I know he played bass.
Chris Jericho
Done it. It was hell. It was great. Best. Stories. Ever.
This is not about touring but it’s “touring” sheety bands with no following, thinking they are good with no concept of getting paid. Even an okay band makes $400 to $600 per night.
Can anyone tell me what the opening credits tune is?
Credit Sequence song is "The Nightfeeders (Live)" by Nudity. cful.bandcamp.com/album/nudity-is-gods-creation
Oh for Christ Sake! If you had money to rent a U-Haul & send two ahead on a Greyhound, "You were not honestly on the road"... I've been there. Did it for years playing. Some times playing 24 nights a month. You have no idea. lol.
I respect the hell out of these people for wanting to get their art out there. But it doesn’t seem like there was much demand for it in many instances!!! At that point, do you still drive 8 hours to play a show in front of 4 people for no money??? Even worse, losing money. At what point do/did these guys decide that this just wasn’t worth their time? It’s fascinating!!!
God bless these people for following their dreams but damn…
Wasn't this originally called "Why you do this"? Based on a Death Angel lyric?
Mary sent me to this video. I can't wait to finish!!
A lot of likeable people featured here. Their music? Perhaps not so much. The market is telling you something if you drive 10 hours for a gig that pays the band $100 (or something like that). And what the market is telling you is that what you have with the music you are playing is a hobby, not a career. The sentiments expressed by various people at the end have it right: touring for these people and their music is best seen as an adventure, a way to meet people, a way to travel and/or a way to hang out with their friends. And if for whatever reason that my ears and the ears of legions who are not showing up for their performances can't perceive, they actually LIKE the sound of what they and their friends are playing--hey, all the better.
Mary Spender sent me here, and I'm so glad she did!!! This is awesome
Thanks!
Amazing documentary.
Thanks!
I've always ever played one tank getaway gigs (if you wanna call 200 miles one way 1 tank) so I don't have to deal with shitty accommodations, getting robbed, or being around my band mates so long I can recognize their fart smells blindfolded. And mind you, I've been doing this since 1986. But this movie made an indelible impression & maybe it's time I change my perspective. So long as it don't kill me, WTF? Right?
A.I. music is going to fix touring.
Playing Fly Over -country. Cool!
Now I want to be in a band again and go on tour ....
What touring in a bands early career, when you are in vans not tour busses, that time is called Paying Your Dues, for a reason folks. Simple as that.
As Hozoji put it - "Prove it" tours.
pretty engaging documentary. I'm not sure what to think about (1:25:45) when she says "it looks like a hooker died in here" I mean, I'm not a PC trumpeter but : Hookers are people. Sometimes they are stuck in tough situations. Poorly executed joke. I don't think she meant anything by it. But maybe the editor could cut it. For her sake
RIP Steve Albini
Such terrible news. He was such a nice guy to me.
Subscribed! Encore:)!!!
I was 4 minutes in when I discovered this wasn't a trailer.
The longest trailer ever!
Thank you so much for making this documentary. I've watched it countless times to the point where I can quote it. I've toured for years and this doc is spot on! The stories we can tell...
Thanks! Yeah, this movie really seemed to strike a chord with those in the know.
Just want to say, I'm obsessed with your channel. Long live The Bismarck and all the bands featured.
For one reason and one reason only if by chance of some divine power you are watching I know how special I can make it for you
Longest tour I did was a week snd a half of the United Kingdom (which is where I’m from) . Sharing hotel rooms with three other males to keep costs down. That was long enough and more than enough traveling for me, especially with the characters I had to tour / play with. Needs must I suppose but I’m not sure I could have handled those much longer American tours. If your not a original member of the band and haven’t had all those years to bound with other band members before the ‘big’ record company signing and touring the non music moments of a tour are very tough
Saw you guys in Houston with Something Fierce. One of the best shows I ever saw.
Can I get a show of hands, can I get a witness?
🥰
🤣🤣🤘🏼🤘🏼
First off, great documentary. At first I was wondering if I could make it thru 2 hours being that all the stories and scenarios were so back of hand, but the familiarity and relatability set in. The laughs start about midway thru for me culminating in the biggest ones from the Tight Bro’s complaint log (the actual entries 😂). I was in Behead The Prophet No Lord Shall Live with Quitty and Dave Harvey (Tight Bros/Nudity), and know a few other subjects in the doc from Bellingham (James Burns, you were funny as usual, Ty) and having toured with Thrones, Joe is always somehow a sight for sore eyes and tours solo often so it was great to hear his perspective. Imo, Dave and Quitty left out the BEST part of our BTP Fargo story: between the two huge floods on either side of our date there (which was on the national flood alert), the audience we played for and their energy, because they had been sandbagging all day out of necessity for their community, was WAY better than average and fucking off the hook high on the energy scale! As I recall, they were bouncing off the walls!!! Thanks for including falsetto coping mechanism voice tho. That produced some laughs (at least when we started doing it at that diner in Fargo) and could be recommended to those on tour when things seem crappy.
Thanks! I should mention that not only was I at that Fargo show (I am from Grand Forks), but I was also in one of the opening bands too. Small world!
"100% Dave Grohl free!" I'm sold!
Was in a band for three years; went on tour once (1991) 6-1/2 weeks, 23 states, 7,862 miles; a life changing event for all of us. Same kinds of stuff - breakdowns, awful hotels, in the summer with no AC, no credit card (cash only), a "calling card" for long distance calls, no email (obviously), staying with people we just met, etc. Anxious to hit the road with somehow getting home being the ultimate destination. Music has become life. Loved the documentary :)
They went a little too far in a few places.
It's never too far...!
Best of the worst sets.
Oh man, this is the best documentary that I have ever seen about touring. The last time I was on tour was 2015. Did 35 days on tour through France and Belgium. 38 venues 39 gigs. Holy Shit !
This is such a great film! Real, honest, entertaining, and insightful. Everyone is likable, and relatable...We need more of this in the world. Great job!
Touring is a lot like joining a gang or the military. It tests your health, spirit and mental resolve. You will never forget the people or the bonds of the people you tour with. And if you survive it you will know if you want to continue to pursue music or go get a regular job
A friend of mine who was in the army saw this movie and sent me a message - "Touring seems a lot like being in the military, hurry up and wait."
@@ericfundingsland confirmed! Thanks for that insight

I'd like to actually hear some of these bands. I'm sorry but a lot of indie bands can't play. Yeah I know you're hip bla bla bla. I've played gigs with more than a few. They can't actually play. Yes Zeppelin was great for a reason. The Beatles were great for a reason.
