Sawmill DIY/ home fabricated DeWalt Radial Arm Sawmill on a Trailer?
This is a DeWalt model 770 radial arm saw. It has only a 10 inch blade, wired 220 v. and is rated 3.5 hp.
In Northern Minnesota red pines are planted and grow like corn does in Iowa making for endless logs of the perfect size (10 inch and small diameters) to mill on this "DeWalt Radial Arm Sawmill."
I have owned DeWalt radial arm saws for over 50 years and to see their usefulness diminished over the years is sad. Granted it is a heavy power tool that people see smaller and lighter miter/cross cutting power tools as more practical, but it turns out that this old beast of a saw is an impressive solid durable, contractor grade, multi purpose power tool that can serve as a sawmill now because of it's weight and still remains and functions as a radial arm saw. Only now it does it all on a log which no bandsaw can do nor match the simplicity in it's operation. Just considering the blade is connected directly to the power source eliminating the bandsaw's convoluted changing and balancing act. Plus the round blade has carbide tipped teeth for long blade life and can be changed without moving the set height of the arm.
Putting a DeWalt Radial Arm Saw in a rolling carriage is a game changer when it comes to the home hobbyist milling smaller logs that most loggers don't want, yet ideal for timber framing small cabins, out buildings, arbors and gazeboes.
The bandsaw cut is only one pass and requires more processing to make smooth, whereas the Radial Arm Sawmill takes 2 to 4 passes setting the depth of cut deeper with each pass but with a smoother cut where a DA sander will make for a finished surface ready for staining or just clear poly.
The logs used with this saw are peeled and aged red pine just like the v-groove knotty pine paneling on your cabin walls in lake country Minnesota.
I will be making more videos of what this expanded capacity of Raymond DeWalt's 100 year old invention "the radial arm saw" can do. Dream on!

This is a contractor grade 10" DeWalt radial arm saw with a 24 tooth, Freud diablo blade , 3.5 hp motor wired for 220 v. I fabricated everything for it from the axle size and width to the carriage the arm is mounted in. There is no simpler saw mill made to handle 10" in. round logs and smaller by 12'-6" long. The trailer is made with 2" x 3" 11 gage steel square tube welded into one solid piece...

Very interesting use. But there are portable bandsaw mills the same size as you have here. Which would make the cut in one pass, with less effort. I'm not knocking your invention, I love radial arm saws, and inventive people.

Thank you for your comments and interest. If you would please read the introduction to this video. Your comments concerning efforts in more passes needed that a lesser quality saw can do should be satisfied. The pros to this sawmill design do out way the cons of a bandsaw design let alone, DeWalt radial arm saws can be bought ranging from free to the most I have paid for is $175.00. I own 11 of them from models 730/740 to 770 to 790s which are the 12" blade contractor grade mod. All 11 saws total around $75.00 a piece.

To be truthfully honest I think any and all other saw mill manufacturers are inconsiderate of their customers having to assemble the Mill, dig holes for footings and or build a shed to put their sawmills in. When the mill should come fully assembled on a trailer so all the customer need do is go to the local dealer and drop the whole mill on their trailer hitch, take it home, gas it and oil it and start milling logs. Making also the added advantage of parking the mill anywhere they want from their garage to another existing out building or outside under weather proof cover. How do you resell a mill that is permanently anchored to the ground? Shouldn’t the next owner be able just hitch it up and take it home? This mill has a one piece welded trailer with one piece 16' rails no shimming or bolting necessary. It is very smooth and accurate in cutting/milling Logs 10" diameter by 12'-6" long. I see with this mill a whole lot more ease and simplicity than a box full of parts and bolts that you still pay shipping for. And the Woodland HM126 fits on these tracks.

Very creative. I see a larger RAS in your future! Seriously, if you had something like a DeWalt GE, 16”, 5 hp, single phase saw, that could cut some reasonably sized lumber with your setup.

Thankyou for your comment. The bigger DeWalt's have crossed my mind only to find they are rare, expensive and actually to big for all the abilities the 740's, 770's and 790's can do. All three of these DeWalt models work adequate to very well, plus they are everywhere and priced from free to $100 or a little more and hardly used to almost new. They need to be re-invented as I have done. I already have 5 - 740's, 3 - 770's and 3 - 790's to make more Radial Arm Sawmills for Northern Minnesota's abundant tree country.

That's a great idea for a low investment mill. Can pick up radial arm saws for next to nothing. I may make an attachment like this for my woodland mills to do clean edging etc.

Funny you should mention Woodland Mills because I made the rails 31.5 inches wide to handle a model 126 Woodland Mill in case my old first DeWalt I bought new in 1977 wouldn't work as well as it did. I now own 10 DeWalt arm saws, 10" 770's and 12" 790's) to use if others would like me to build a copy. This saws articulating power head abilities are yet to be realized. I'm tickled pink over its future to revive such a great old iconic saw. The simplicity of use and function blows away the bandsaw style. If I want lumber I'll buy the 2 x's and use this to make timbers, post and beams for the main structural strength and looks. I have 100's of already cured and pealed red pines to mill, plus the thousands standing in Minnesota.

I have been using radial arm saws since I was 17... that's over 50 years. What is it that you know that I don't know?

A neighbor cut down a bunch of nice red pines to clear for a cabin and I wasn't going to watch them rot away like the last time I saw the power company clear and stack them away from the utility zone. Unwanted trees meet the unwanted saw!
