Mahalo for the excellent instructions! As so many years have gone by I could not remember how to play, mahalo for bringing it all back! Aloha!😊🌺💕
Excellent instructions... Played Sakura growing up in Kalihi and Palolo...Aloha!
That's what our family called the game growing up in Hawaii...'Sakura'. Learned from my grandmother who grew up in Kalihi. Aloha!😊🌸
What's the score gained for each yaku.
I wish you had a video on the advanced version so we could see the instructions from the website in action.
What I don’t understand about the ‘Ohana rule is what happens for the player that gets the whole ‘ohana. I mean, they will have less cards then every other player, so do they just skip their turn? Or have less turns? What is the benefit of using the ‘ohana rule?
This is honestly pretty different from Koi-Koi
Wait... Those Hanafuda cards with no markings include Nintendo brand ones, too!
Remember, speaking of sets in Hanafuda, you only need 2 cards, including the Chrynthasenum Seed (September) card to complete the Cherry-Blossom Viewing or Moon Viewing sets. I your opponent snags one, watch out!

what is the best way to shuffle hanafuda cards?
ps thank you for this video, it was very helpful!
Ahhhh thank you for such great instructions! I loved the animation! I use to play this game when I was a kid in Hawaii and I forgot how to play it! Thank you! 😁
What happens if a card you flip over is already in the right column?
Then no need to do anything.
I got the Na Pua Hawaii deck of cards and I love them. I just need to find other people to play with. I have each card inside a soft card sleeve so no dirt gets on them, and it makes it easier to poke in cards to shuffle.
How I didn't watch this video before? thank you very much!
-50 points per yaku seems very harsh if you're playing with more people and the most you can make from a set is 30 points. Seems like you'll be in the negative at the end of most games.
That’s why you want to try to block your opponent from getting a yaku
very cool
This sounds like a very cut throat game
Great video, thank you!
Thank you, very helpful. Also looks like it could get complex in game play, as I played card games in the 90's but this game looks very unique. What lead me here is the controversy, over a set of earrings. In the Anime show Demon Slayer that came out in 2019 I believe, and all that rising sun history. Little that the west understood, they're simply cards as earrings.
Is there a way to play this online?
Question: if 3 cards of the set are in the field and a player uses a gaji to claim one of the cards is this allowed? Meaning if the other players do not have the last card in the set in their hands is the gaji valid and can that player claim the one card they want?
When you play the Gaji card as a wild card to take one of a Hiki, there are three cards left, so the Gaji card player takes the odd card left over. But now there is an odd 5 point Willow card leftover as well. Who, if any, takes that 5 point card at the end of the game? My family plays that the player with a Willow pair takes it, but it could also be left on the field or the gaji player could be rewarded that point card as well.
It’s going to depend on the house. You can make as many variations as you want really
Cute video and explanation. A bit complex, though...
where are you? are you good?
I clicked because of the sick looking frog
Having a lot of fun playing Hanafuda with the family! Thanks to this video we learned very quick. We have some doubts about the Hikki rule. Can you play a Hikki anytime during the game?
This is such a cute instructional! The Cartoon Art & Snap Sound of the Cards, all done with clear instructions. Waiting for the Amazon delivery of my Cards as I type. ☺ 🌸🌿🌺
Very informative. I swear I read "How to play Hanafuda Kawaii Style Complete Instructions" as the title, but I guess that, too, applies haha.
Me to XD
Wow this is so cool thanks for making this
I googled what Hanafuda means and that is how I got here. Also I misread the title to say "kawaii" instead of "hawaii" lol.
Thank you. I haven't played this in a very long time and wanted to learn to play again. This was so helpful
Thanks for this video. We call this variation of hanafuda, "higobana". The August suit is actually, "susuki"芒, not "suzuki".
Aloha, just found site, oh what memories.Brief backstory. I’m formally from Nanakuli, born and raised in Hawaii.I can remember as a youngster at our O’Hara gatherings, my aunties and uncles Would bring out the “Sakura” cards. Those were fond memories. Now at the young age of 70, I’m trying to teach my friends in a small community of Alpine, California how to p,ay the game. It’s been hilarious! As my friends are native Californians and I have a vaguely remember the game, your site has made it possible to pay the game correctly, A big mahalo to you!!
Thank you for sharing, just got my first hanafuda Deck and this is exactly the video i needed and Who knows maybe One day I ll will be playing it on a beach!! Have a nice day
There's no actual strategy or choice in this is there? There is no way to avoid the willows...
It's all about luck, and about learning the suits.
i think the point is to learn the cards, not win the game. the game is just there to teach
The same is true of regular solitaire. There's no player strategy involved.
@@ChiGyu620 exactly
Really well explained
Looks like Nintendo loosened up to people showing gameplay of their games on TH-cam
Oh right, Hanafuda was Nintendo's first product before going to toys and video games
Nintendo didn't invent hanafuda cards, they just manufactured them and still do. I collect decks with many variations on the standard designs. These folks designed two of the most beautiful. A new Hawaiian style of game play arose among Japanese immigrants to Hawaii.
i wouldn’t simply discard the valueless cards because there is a yaku when you pull lots of them or have a total score of under 15
That’s only for regular Koi-Koi
this game is so fun
Ddaeng
Relavent comment nintendo
Ah... very nice! Cute animation, nice video explaining the game.
I have watched a few of your videos and like the artwork best of this Hawaiian deck. Where do I find this one? Read reviews saying people liked learning with Hawaiian deck first over smaller Japanese original cards.
At 6:09 you should have closed the fan, so that frog's stacked cards don't fly off
Hi, nice game and very nice video! I don't understand the "discard pile", what cards are considerd without points, if the point chart includes all cards are they the most simple ones, like no ribbon, no animal, no moon etc?
the easy version has point on the cards, so no worries. The original ones has no point on it, so a reference sheet is recommended
this was cute
Just won my first game after 4 games. This is a fairly easy solitaire game and I enjoy it. Just learned it tonight from this video.
Jacob are the carsa made of ordinary paper or lacquered ones?
Great! Thanks for the videos, really happy to learn this!
Looks fun! thank you!
