Joplin Storm Passes Pierce City, Missouri, May 22, 2011
มุมมอง 186K13 ปีที่แล้ว
Footage shot off my back porch in Pierce City, Missouri. A few minutes into the video, my wife and I shut ourselves in the basement. This is the same storm system that spawned the tornado that destroyed much of Joplin on Sunday, May 22nd. Pierce City is located about 45 miles east southeast of Joplin. You may recall that much of our town was taken by a tornado on May 4, 2003. Check out my other...

Following the "Falling Leaves Festival" quilt show in Pierce City, Missouri on Saturday September 12th, 2009. We set up the camera and recorded as we broke down the huge quilt racks from the show. This time lapse of the of the approximately 46 min. process is a homage to the old Benny Hill show.

Did you think the tornado was still active?
My name is patty drake and my ex husband is Rudy Batchelder and he was volunteering for the American red cross in Joplin and we were in the his truck we were at the soul creek 😢
Thanks for posting this! I'll be doing this course in December of this year
The wind in this video sounds like an incoming tornado, except it builds and then lets off, an incoming tornado doesn't let off....it just keeps coming with one of the most chilling sounds there is 😮
where was this
Those poor windchimes went thru hell...lol
My wife and I were team long haul driving at this time, we were scheduled out of OKC to drop an empty refer and hook up a load at the Flying J in Joplin that evening. About 75 miles into the drive, the weather report and local conditions started getting pretty sketchy. It was around 5:00 and the sky in front of us was a giant strobe light. Never seen lightening like that in 10 years of long haul. Woke the wife and pulled into a restaurant parking lot for dinner, about 30 miles out of Joplin. Thank God it was time for me to clock out and make the switch. The sky to the north was a dark greenish purple, and even where we were, gusts came up hard enough to rock the rig pretty good. We sat and had dinner, lights flickered a bunch of times and we talked about how lucky my 10 hour was up. By the time we finished eating, we could tell all hell was breaking loose up ahead. I called dispatch and told them no way she was driving into that shit. Dispatch bitched a little, of course, but it's always down to the driver for safety. We heard thru CB that trucks were blown over on the interstate and that Joplin was getting chewed up. About half hour after I called in, dispatch put out an alert for all drivers to stay out of the Joplin area. That Flying J, and the trucks parked there was tore up with some fatalities and many injuries, the load we were gonna pick up was destroyed. Thank God I had to time out.
Flywheel, I am so happy that you and your wife avoided a deadly situation. Glad you guys are still in the world today! 😮
Wow! It sounds like your experience and gut instinct served you well. I've seen several videos of semis getting tossed in this storm, I'm thankful you guys were not added to the list. One more reason to always listen to your drivers! They're the ones out there, they're the ones in the middle of it, they're the ones taking the risks, they're the ones who should be trusted to make that call.
I was was watching hoping the winds would blow those stupid f*cking wind chimes away 🌪🌪🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hi
I been watching a few documentaries about the Joplin tornado, Can’t even explain much on how bad the storm was and all of those fatalities that day.😞😞
I had just turned 2 the day before this… living in the East Coast, I didn’t really give a crap about it, until hearing about in elementary school.
I cried so hard at this ....that the hospital was not spared 🤧...its like the tornado did not want people seeking help
I remember when I was little on my back porch in Springfield watching the debris from the end of the Pierce City tornado that destroyed your whole town.
Is that the roar of the tornado at 2:22??
I think, but idk
May 4, 2003, isn't that when the Kansas City suburbs got hit hard? By the way, I can hear the roar of it 8 minutes into the video.
I can't stop watching blogs on Joplin storm bless 🙏💯 them
Is this the one that hit national guard armory with ppl in it?
This may be rain wrapped ef0 notice the wind changes when it gets going
hi richard reed
Pierce City's uniquely beautiful old downtown was ravaged. It is hard.
I wonder at 8:43, was that like 75 mph straight line winds, or was that a downburst?
I was in Mount Vernon, it was my brother's birthday
WOW!!!
I definitely remember Pierce City getting hit on May 4, 2003
This was a frightening storm, even 45 miles down the road.
The wind chimes are in movie mode.
Love the chimes and the bells sound while downburst's approaching 😍 cool video
I wonder if tv or radio was on to listen to whats going on, to see if theres a tornado and where it is
Zzcvwww
Unlike others, I was disappointed by the vid. I saw no real tornado action. A tiny bit of wind and hard rain. Not even any trees or branches down, that I could see. Just a good old fashioned thunderstorm!
this is the same storm that hit joplin with an EF5. The tornado had only just dissipated before it hit them.
This house was on the outside of the path,

Hello Richard Reed, is it possible to contact you regarding this video (i.e. via email)? We would be interested to discuss a license to use this video if this is generally possible to discuss? :) Cheers, Felix
So what... Lol it looks more like the weather weekend Canada on a normal winter day lol
Not worth watching
Close maybe but the twister wasn't on them.
Kudos to that fire engine trying to act as a tornado siren/warning. Bet they didn't much enjoy having to hunker down in the open with trees close by.
For any "impatients", the action really starts picking up at 7:05.
Looks like you lived right next to a park? It almost looks the road in front of your house is more a driveway. LOL interesting....
Crazy. When you look at the list of the worst or most deadly tornadoes in American history, this is the only one so far in the 21st century. The last one before it was was decades upon decades prior. That's how deadly and intense this one was! Not even the recent one in Dec 2021 could hold a candle to it (in some ways).
Looks like you all had fun! Thanks for sharing the memory
Thank goodness the Joplin tornado had long since dissipated by the time the storm had reached your location. Strong storms indeed!
This was the same experience I endured in my front yard on that day. But, god damn it. I walked away unharmed. Suicide by weather doesn't work. It's been 10 years +,, and I still want to die.
Oh goodness. Striking footage of the glow.
TREES ARE SMART! THEY ALWAYS POINT AT THE TORNADO. SO YOU KNOW WHERE IT IS.
wonder if windchimes were originally made to alert for tornados

Did you know at this point what had already happened in Joplin?
I graduated from there in 59. It broke my heart to see it like that. We was there the night before to a rodeo my grandson rode in. So so sad.
