The thickness and depth of the bari players sound is something ive never heard. The bass clarinets control and tone are just as good as the bari's too.

Einleitung: Titel und Komponist: "Das alte Schloss" aus "Bilder einer Ausstellung" von Modest Mussorgsky Kurzer historischer Kontext: 1874 komponiert, inspiriert von Viktor Hartmanns Gemälden. Hauptthema: Eindruck eines alten, verlassenen Schlosses. Hauptteil: Struktur und Form: Langsamer Satz mit wiederkehrendem Thema, das eine melancholische Stimmung erzeugt. Melodie, Harmonie und Rhythmus: Die Melodie ist getragen und sanft, mit einfachen, aber ergreifenden Harmonien. Der Rhythmus ist langsam und fließend. Klangfarbe und Instrumentierung: Tiefe, warme Klangfarben, oft durch Holzbläser und Streicher dargestellt. Ein Saxophon oder ein ähnliches Instrument spielt die Hauptmelodie. I think Mussorgsky was inspired from the begining part of Mendelssohn's "Violin Concerto In E Minor", reducing the tempo. I listened recent and for the first time this Mendelssohn Concerto and the first part seemed so familiar. Where it is from??? I finally remembered: Mussorgsky - Pictures...!!! I have the vinyl and I found!!! THE OLD CASTLE!!! I listened again and again, it is similar, so was inspiration or theft?

I'm a clarinet player. Have been for about 10 years. Got 4 years of school for it. Most times I'd argue that clarinet was the move over sax. But I can't get that sweet silky tone on my clarinet. Need alto sax for that. Long story short, don't let clarinet players talk down to you. They can't do everything like they think they can.

Bup bumm, Bup bumm of the bassoon.....and the legato sax!....with the swelling and diminishing strings...the middle discordant tension....

I am a great believer in musical tradition, and the saxophone is not traditionally a part of the symphony orchestra. When it does make an occasional guest appearance in this genre it is always memorable. Ravel's choice of alto sax was perfect, nothing else could make this melancholy tune so haunting. Ralph Vaughan-Williams included sax in two of his symphonies. No.9 is scored for three saxes!

This might be my favorite piece of classical music. It has a certain mysterious sound that I can't get enough of. Lastly. That Sax brought it home!

One of the sweetest pieces of music ever written. And this is THE best recording of it that I've ever heard. Sublime performance.
