In this video, Dr. Akhilesh Sharma discusses birthmarks, explaining what they are, the different types, and how they can be treated. Birthmarks are mainly of two types: nevus, which is generally black in color, and vascular.
First, the doctor discusses nevus, which occurs at birth and may start getting darker over time. It can be removed through a small laser treatment or a day-care surgery. The other type, which can be larger and darker in shade, may be flat and could have hair growth. This type generally grows with increasing age and can be removed surgically. In the case of larger marks, mobilizing the flat surface may be necessary, and a skin graft may be required for attachment.
Now, moving on to vascular birthmarks, which can include hemangiomas, port-wine stains, and low-flow vascular marks. Low-flow vascular marks are generally less visible initially but grow darker with age. In some cases, they may increase the size of veins and bones. Although they typically appear on the face, they can also appear on other parts of the body.
Hemangiomas are present at birth but may not be visible right away. They typically grow for about two years and can resemble a mosquito bite initially. If they do not reduce on their own, surgery may be necessary.
For port-wine stains and low-flow vascular malformations, if the skin size is not large and proper care is taken, a pulse dye laser process can be used. This laser targets the blood vessels, helping to reduce the marks. However, maintenance and use of this laser can be costly, requiring around 15-20 sessions, making the overall treatment expensive.
If you notice any red or brown birthmarks on your body, they are likely vascular marks, and you should contact a doctor as soon as possible. While other birthmarks can often be ignored, vascular marks should be evaluated and treated.
Additionally, there is a type called giant hairy mole, which has a dark shade and hair. This type should be removed promptly, as it can lead to melanoma, a form of skin cancer, which can be difficult to treat.
