Not really much of a story, just a cool video of the Collins Foundation restoration of an old B-24 into The Dragon and his Tail. Years ago I had an older, retired, Italian man living next to me. We used to chat all of the time mainly about computer stuff, but also about his service in WW2. He wanted to be a fighter pilot. But instead, they stuffed him into a B-24 as a pilot that flew in the pacific. He told me few war stories, mostly trying to avoid them. He told me of the 'Torpedo Juice' that they made themselves. He told that his preferred way into the cockpit was to climb through the nose gear. His plane was "The Dragon and his Tail" He was very proud that when the Collins Foundation restored a B-24, the first art work they used was The Dragon. He was one of the first that was taken up for a ride. Not sure if he was ever behind the wheel on that ride. Joe's gone now, I miss him.
Mad. I stood next to this thing in 2002 or so. Pease Airport in New Hampshire. They also had the nine of nine b 17 there. I still have the T-shirt of the nine of nine. I washed it today funny enough. Maybe that is why i am here.....
Neat little model of the DC-2 on the bench!
Remember watching the tape on this at the national library.
It's ALWAYS ALWAYS Mr. Schroder!! He NEVER needs sleep. He doesn't think about food? It appears as if Mr. Schroeder is the only railroad engineer contracted to be in all of the passenger railroad videos of days gone by! What would they do without Mr. Schroeder??
Roger sr. 🫡
Budd and Lou... I see what you did there. 👀😆
I think the guy in the engine room is my father who was a riding tech on passenger trains
I remember these cars well growing up in the 1960's. My grandfather's summer house in West Wildwood NJ was less halfway up the street from the Pennsylvania Reading Seashore Lines track into Wildwood NJ. The RDC's passed through our neighborhood many times a day. The tracks are long gone and what track remain from Cape May and North of Cap May Courthouse are all overgrown. Several RDC's sit stranded on a siding in the Courthouse. They are gutted and covered inside with graffiti. Very sad.
Isn’t it still done the same way basically?
Passengers had to enter through the cab!
A great movie......USA was the best.... but no more with biden and the democrats
Too bad for all the fallen flag railroads. The merger of Pensy and New York Central forming the Pen Central doomed both fallen flags. It became increasingly difficult for railroads after the end of the 1950. I model a fallen flag railroad, the Central of Georgia since I used to live in Georgia. CofG was purchased by Southern Rail lines in 1962, and then Southern was purchased by Norfolk Southern after acquiring Norfolk Western, forming the parent company. Cheers from eastern TN
Thank you for making this film available. It has allowed me to more realistically fly the DC-3 in MSFS 2020
Such an ornate old diner! (A maintenance nightmare!)
Engineer Schroeder is violating the "100 Mile Rule"! His union won't like that!
Too bad we don't have all that industry here anymore.
So many human computers working in unison. Watching these films convince me of one thing - I am not smart enough to work here
amazing technology and craftmanship to build the plane
That was real railroading, not like today.
America should have made continuous significant investments in passenger rail transportation between major cities. We should have been a world leader, enhancing and innovating the experience. Sad.
Fascinating movie
Arthur Kennedy. A movie icon.
On a sunny fall Sunday afternoon while flying kites near the Needham MA reservoir with my cousins' father a RDC ambled by on the tracks above. What a beautiful sight AND memory. That was 60 years ago...
I wonder what that station is around 8:40?
I grew up right above the railroad tracks in Woods Hole, Mass. Thank you for sharing this great documentary that features my childhood home and the beloved ferry Islander!
It didn’t get maximum economy because union rules required an engineer plus a fireman. Thus a one car train needed a crew of three when you added in a conductor.
Fix the aspect ratio please. S t r e t c h e d isn't the way we see the world.
A gateman, a motorman? When I was a engineer I was the motorman too.
It's not enough to couple the cars together with drawbar "knuckles." The brake lines have to be connected as well. Not too difficult, but requires stepping between each pair of cars and fastening the hoses together with a twist. The brake check requires the entire trains brake system to get pressurized to first set the emergency brake chambers one each car . . . and then (via an ingenious valve system) to pu enough pressure in the line from engine-to-rear-end to then release those brakes. It's amazing how simple, complex and functional and it is not that different now vs. 80 years ago. Small differences like way more unit trains, yard air pressure (to prep the trains before or without an engine) and electronic controls. Safety, durability and efficiency are always the goal.
"non-habit forming" lmao
The Richard I. Bong Veterans Museum here in Superior has a restored P-38 on Display. Richard Bong had 40 confirmed kills and is known as the Aces of Aces. There are many stories of his flying around Superior during a visit. Some true and some have been embellished over the years. In any case he was a great flyer and had a great plane.
Where do I signup? 😮
Beautiful consists.
What a beautiful and elegant looking dining car
The engineers don't wave from the trains anymore, not like they did back in 1954,when I was a boy, I'd hang around the tracks, watching those trains going to Louisville and back.
Noice how well dressed everyone is?
WHO DOESNT LOVE THE FORTRESS!!!
THAT was great--- but I'd say the MOST BEAUTIFUL B-17 landing was the one made when the guys in it had just finished their LAST MISSION and would be going home!!!
Good Stuff. Thank you.
I always wondered how Spencer Tracy fit in the back of a Lightning in that film where he's a ghost.
It's very interesting seeing what must be a very early diesel locomotive paired with old-fashioned heavyweight cars. A combination of the old and hyper-new.
Teletypes? Two-way radios? Diesel locomotives? My gosh, what WILL they think of next?
you had to ask didn't you? 😂😂
So were these two actors actual C47 pilots?
y'all aboard ladies and gentlemen, on our time travel train.
Greatest time to grow up, be home by dark, fishing, hunting, dirt clod wars and rock fights with the neighbor kids from down the road. Watching and hearing the steam engine train whistles in the distance wondering where they were going and the places they were seeing. When I was a kid I couldn't wait to get off the farm, now I'd give anything to go back. I'm Proud to be an American, the Greatest Nation on God's Green Earth, may she Live Long and Prosper...Good Bless All...and Ultra Maga
Couldn't have said it better myself, so true, thanks!!!
Rock fights, now that brings back memories. Learned valuable life lessons back then, latest generation is lost in their phones.
Mr. Schroeder looks just like my dad
I just love videos like this. I wish America could be nice like that again.
Im just like everybody else
Depressed and lonely?
