Surely the tearing apart of the family unit is what leads to seeking a divorce, and the "no hassle" part is having the legal process not add extra stress to a terrible situation

Getting a divorce should be easy. It makes no sense to force people to stay in a loveless marriage, or worse, an abusive or controlling one. A marriage is just a contract and just like all contracts, they can be broken.

Do you an alternative? Maybe wait longer before marriage? Endure a marriage that you don’t want to be a part of? State a solution, not just the problem

Great perspective, Nathan! I love it when progressives and woke idealogues claim that me wanting to be the provider for the family and taking the lead on making household financial decisions such that my wife can be a stay-at-home mother and stress about other things is antiquated, disrespectful, etc. Ummm... I have a finance MBA and earned the CFA and teach finance in universities so I think I'm qualified on the household finance piece, and even if I wasn't... she doesn't even WANT a "career" or to be a financial provider or to have the responsibility of those financial decisions? 😂 She is called to other things, which are frankly as (and likely more) important as anything I'll ever do.

My 12 year old son has no social media, any screen time is monitored, he sits next to me at my desk, I don't plan on any of my children having social media or even a mobile phone until at least 16-18 I try to teach them about the risks associated with being online and how to pick up scams and general shady activity I think it's important to also let them have some level of risk that they need to manage as well or else become overly sheltered so I allow them to have those opportunities when possible, if they make a mistake then I can be there to assist

The problem is two-fold 1. It is difficult to pin down what is and what is not a good age to allow full access to smartphones 2. A large part of the problem doesn’t lay with the kids, it starts with the parents, whom assume that there children will be responsible with their phone usage because they got their phones later in life, so they get into this mindset of thinking ‘well if I was fine then they are fine.’ But it doesn’t, phone addiction can occur but its all about teaching your children good digital health and safety. For example, I got my first phone at 11, but instead of buying me a new one, they got me an old IPhone 5, it worked well enough to teach me good internet etiquette and safety as well show me that I didn’t really need it. In short the whole “ban under 16 usage” feels like a dumb, blunt force fix it for something that is situationally specific

This is dumb! Teach kids how to navigate the world we live in. Trying to lock them away from it is only setting them up for failure!

I think the evidence is starting to show overwhelmingly that the crazy thing is to consider NOT banning children and teenagers from having smartphones and social media.

Where money flows usually has little to do with where money OUGHT to flow!

It's becoming clear that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with only primary consciousness will probably have to come first. What I find special about the TNGS is the Darwin series of automata created at the Neurosciences Institute by Dr. Edelman and his colleagues in the 1990's and 2000's. These machines perform in the real world, not in a restricted simulated world, and display convincing physical behavior indicative of higher psychological functions necessary for consciousness, such as perceptual categorization, memory, and learning. They are based on realistic models of the parts of the biological brain that the theory claims subserve these functions. The extended TNGS allows for the emergence of consciousness based only on further evolutionary development of the brain areas responsible for these functions, in a parsimonious way. No other research I've encountered is anywhere near as convincing. I post because on almost every video and article about the brain and consciousness that I encounter, the attitude seems to be that we still know next to nothing about how the brain and consciousness work; that there's lots of data but no unifying theory. I believe the extended TNGS is that theory. My motivation is to keep that theory in front of the public. And obviously, I consider it the route to a truly conscious machine, primary and higher-order. My advice to people who want to create a conscious machine is to seriously ground themselves in the extended TNGS and the Darwin automata first, and proceed from there, by applying to Jeff Krichmar's lab at UC Irvine, possibly. Dr. Edelman's roadmap to a conscious machine is at arxiv.org/abs/2105.10461

No, they should not. That requires a counter-cultural mindset... but it seems to be the only responsible position. Even Bill gates doesn't let his children have phones until they are 14.
