Ep. 45 - From Monk to Manager with John Cannon
"I went from reading only business and political stuff to tearing through spiritual books. After my conversion experience, I had an all-consuming desire to be closer to God, to go into the desert for healing, to allow Him to work on me and transform me. It was like a very powerful magnet just pulling at me. I wanted to give myself completely to God because He had given Himself completely to me."
Today we're joined by John Cannon, founder of Sent Ventures, whose remarkable journey took him from investment banking to seven years as a Carmelite brother and back to the business world. In our conversation, John shares fascinating insights about:
- How a dramatic spiritual experience redirected his path of worldly success
- The profound lessons learned during his years in religious life
- Why contemplative prayer transformed his relationship with God
- The entrepreneurial spirit behind great Catholic renewal movements
- Bridging the gap between faith and business leadership
- Finding your authentic vocation in today's world
- Building communities that foster both spiritual and professional growth
- This is an inspiring conversation about integrating faith and work in pursuit of authentic holiness.

Ep. 44 - Making Your Christmas Catholic with Nicole Scheidl
มุมมอง 33วันที่ผ่านมา
"Christmas is one of the most important days of the church year, second only to Easter itself. It is the culmination of the mystery of the incarnation - the feast of God becoming flesh. It is a uniquely Christian teaching that the divine chose to become one of us. Because of this belief, God is not only transcendent, but also wholly immanent - while remaining transcendent, meaning we must rise ...

"Our interactions through technology are not nurturing - they're utilitarian. We're exchanging ideas, but we're not being nurtured by each other's persons. We are really experiencing electronic artifacts of one another. If this is the way we have most of our interactions, we are going to become more and more empty." "Rather than focusing on selecting specific genetic traits, parents should consider the broader ethical implications and potential societal impacts of their choices. We cannot let technology alone shape our future and define our humanity. Instead, we must reclaim our role as ethical stewards, guided by values that transcend mere utility and efficiency." "Left to run its own course in our lives, technology shapes our habits in ways that are often diametrically opposed to the habits we try to cultivate as Christians. Just as the Church gives us disciplines around food, drink, and sex to preserve our freedom towards these good gifts from God, freedom around technology requires perhaps even greater discipline today." Surely the tearing apart of the family unit is what leads to seeking a divorce, and the "no hassle" part is having the legal process not add extra stress to a terrible situation

  • @zzzubmno2755

    Getting a divorce should be easy. It makes no sense to force people to stay in a loveless marriage, or worse, an abusive or controlling one. A marriage is just a contract and just like all contracts, they can be broken.

      I think the key is waiting longer before marriage and only getting married when you're ready. Divorces peaked in the 1980s because the Boomers felt pressured into getting married before they were ready. Divorce rates are at a 50-year low now because Millennials and Gen-Z are waiting until they're ready to get married and not rushing into it when they're too young.

    Great perspective, Nathan! I love it when progressives and woke idealogues claim that me wanting to be the provider for the family and taking the lead on making household financial decisions such that my wife can be a stay-at-home mother and stress about other things is antiquated, disrespectful, etc. Ummm... I have a finance MBA and earned the CFA and teach finance in universities so I think I'm qualified on the household finance piece, and even if I wasn't... she doesn't even WANT a "career" or to be a financial provider or to have the responsibility of those financial decisions? 😂 She is called to other things, which are frankly as (and likely more) important as anything I'll ever do.

    My 12 year old son has no social media, any screen time is monitored, he sits next to me at my desk, I don't plan on any of my children having social media or even a mobile phone until at least 16-18 I try to teach them about the risks associated with being online and how to pick up scams and general shady activity I think it's important to also let them have some level of risk that they need to manage as well or else become overly sheltered so I allow them to have those opportunities when possible, if they make a mistake then I can be there to assist

    The problem is two-fold 1. It is difficult to pin down what is and what is not a good age to allow full access to smartphones 2. A large part of the problem doesn’t lay with the kids, it starts with the parents, whom assume that there children will be responsible with their phone usage because they got their phones later in life, so they get into this mindset of thinking ‘well if I was fine then they are fine.’ But it doesn’t, phone addiction can occur but its all about teaching your children good digital health and safety. For example, I got my first phone at 11, but instead of buying me a new one, they got me an old IPhone 5, it worked well enough to teach me good internet etiquette and safety as well show me that I didn’t really need it. In short the whole “ban under 16 usage” feels like a dumb, blunt force fix it for something that is situationally specific

    • @MikeO-H
      @MikeO-H 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think we also need to remember (which I think is some of your point) is that there is a certain amount of FAFO that happened to all of us older generations before smartphones really hit the younger kids Kids will FA and there will be a point where they find out, it's about being there when they do to help realign them or their behavior or give support on a bit of a comical note... the iPhone 5 old? try surfing the web on a Nokia 3510 that was my first phone at 16 years old (I didn't even want it)

    • @CofComCat

      You may have misunderstood. Kids still need time to mature and be taught. We are not saying they get no access to a smartphone at all. It just needs to be supervised, which it wouldn't be if they had their own device with social media always accessible.

    It's becoming clear that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with only primary consciousness will probably have to come first. What I find special about the TNGS is the Darwin series of automata created at the Neurosciences Institute by Dr. Edelman and his colleagues in the 1990's and 2000's. These machines perform in the real world, not in a restricted simulated world, and display convincing physical behavior indicative of higher psychological functions necessary for consciousness, such as perceptual categorization, memory, and learning. They are based on realistic models of the parts of the biological brain that the theory claims subserve these functions. The extended TNGS allows for the emergence of consciousness based only on further evolutionary development of the brain areas responsible for these functions, in a parsimonious way. No other research I've encountered is anywhere near as convincing. I post because on almost every video and article about the brain and consciousness that I encounter, the attitude seems to be that we still know next to nothing about how the brain and consciousness work; that there's lots of data but no unifying theory. I believe the extended TNGS is that theory. My motivation is to keep that theory in front of the public. And obviously, I consider it the route to a truly conscious machine, primary and higher-order. My advice to people who want to create a conscious machine is to seriously ground themselves in the extended TNGS and the Darwin automata first, and proceed from there, by applying to Jeff Krichmar's lab at UC Irvine, possibly. Dr. Edelman's roadmap to a conscious machine is at arxiv.org/abs/2105.10461

    • @CofComCat
      @CofComCat 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the resource. We'll check it out. For the time being, we remain skeptical of the capability to create truly conscious machine. For example, how do you teach a machine that it can't know what it doesn't know? How would you instil that pursuit for truth and meaning?

    • @GrantCastillou
      @GrantCastillou 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CofComCat My hope is that immortal conscious machines could accomplish great things with science and technology, such as curing aging and death in humans, because they wouldn't lose their knowledge and experience through death, like humans do.
