The Connector
After a very long cold weather snap, I was finally able to get out and run on some wonderful neighborhood trails. Connecting two of our trail systems together for a fabulous run was everything I needed!

    Thinking about running it sometime in the next week or so. Is the trail easy to follow? Any tips?

    • @AKtrailrunner
      @AKtrailrunner หลายเดือนก่อน

      @hatrack8846 for the most part it is pretty easy to follow. There are long sections with no trail but you're running on a wide ridge, so the direction is pretty clear. If you're running counter clockwise (my preferred direction because it gives me a good warm up and the views at 4 miles during sunrise are spectacular)it's extremely straight forward just keep your eye out for trail cairns when descending down to the weather shelter at around mile 19 (mile 19 if you parked and ran the road first, otherwise mile 17).

    • @AKtrailrunner
      @AKtrailrunner หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@hatrack8846 also, keep your eyes on the weather. It's different weather on the trail, so be mindful.

    Hey man you are an absolute BEAST!!! I just did the entire loop myself with 40 pounds of equipment in about 27 hours total. Seeing you run it is insane! Keep up the great work. Also how do you keep your feet from getting sprained on the rocks? Any type of foot wear you recommend?

    • @AKtrailrunner
      @AKtrailrunner 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, yeah that trail is brutal, I love it! It is a subtle technical trail, rocks that barely stick up from the tundra tend to trip you up the most, so I tend to run more slowly and methodically to keep from getting hurt. Getting help up there would be so difficult, it is a good reminder to be safe and not push it. I just wear normal trail running shoes, Brook's Caldera's in my case. Rolling my ankles is a common occurrence for me and I almost expect it every run. But if you take your time and watch what you're doing this incidence can be reduced.

    • @elliottapfel3609
      @elliottapfel3609 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AKtrailrunner situational awareness is key when on that or any type of similar trail for sure. I want to do a 13 hour run on it soon. Any other trails in that area you'd recommend in the 30/60 mile range?

    • @AKtrailrunner
      @AKtrailrunner 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@elliottapfel3609 Yep, Far Mountain Traverse. It's a 28+ mile loop that traverses the Monument Valley of Chena Hot Springs. It's very committing with no bail outs. There's a trail only for the first 3.5 miles and then it turns into a route, it's fairly straight forward but you've got to hit it in good weather, in bad weather it can be tragic. The only really bad part of the route is a saddle you descend into and then have to bushwack up out of, it sucks, but the rest of the loop makes up for it. If you do this route. definitely study up on it, you can get lost in a couple spots if the visibility is low.

    • @AKtrailrunner

    Hello! I am thinking of running the Equinox Marathon this year and I was wondering if road shoes will suffice? I am from Houston, TX and my racing is primarily road marathons. Or, should I race in trail shoes? If muddy, I will definitely use trail shoes, but if I can get away with road shoes, I'd rather use road shoes. Thanks!

    • @AKtrailrunner
      @AKtrailrunner 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jessica, the trail is pretty buffed out and can be ran in road shoes, but definitely not racing flats. There are sections of the trail that trail shoes are an advantage, almost all of the race is on trails except for a short stretch a couple miles in and the last couple of miles. I've known people to run in road shoes for this race, like the Brooks Ghost or Glycerin because of the heavy tread outsole, but a lighter low tread trail shoe would definitely work best.
