Art Deco Abstract Shelf - Walnut & Curly Maple
In this video, I made an abstract, art deco style shelf using walnut and curly maple. Full lap join has the curly maple shelves set into the walnut uprights.

Making a Dining Room Table from Reclaimed Lumber
มุมมอง 1K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
The boards we're using for the table top were sheathing off of an old garage built in the 50s, with lots of nail holes and tar paper residue. The base it built from poplar since it takes paint very well. There were lots of cracks in the old, dry wood we used for the top, so we used multiple butterflies to stabilize the cracks - far more than we expected.

Excellent work enjoyed the video😊
Thank you. I appreciate you watching.
Great job Les.
Thanks Ron. Appreciate it.
I like the way you make things out of wood.
Thank you.
Looks beautiful!
Thank you!
Nice work.
Thanks.
that tool you use to spot if there is a nail on the wood, what is it called?
Mine is the Little Wizard II. I'm pretty sure I bought it at Woodcraft. Thanks for watching.
Glueing the drawer fronts. Genius. Never seen that before. Definitely using it in the future for these types of fronts
Thanks and thanks for watching.
Do you have plans for that piece? I do mostly Greene and Greene and Stickly.
No unfortunately I don't. I made it based on the spalted maple I had to work with. I appreciate you watching the video. I've yet to do Stickley, I'd like to at some point.
Well done, sir.
Thanks and thanks for watching.
Did you do a rough cutout and then finish it up with a flush trim bit using the under mount sink as a guide? I was thinking about doing this. Did you get good results?
Yes. That's exactly right. I have the full video with more detail on my TH-cam page. This should be the link. th-cam.com/video/U4TGVcBJFCg/w-d-xo.html. I'm pretty low tech so this may not be it. If not you can go to my page and view what parts of the 11 minute video you would like. Thank you for watching.
Beautiful! Love the design and the use of the recycled wood.
Thank you very much!
Love the reclaimed wood top.
Thank you.
What poly did you use and brush to apply???
Minwax satin oil based poly with a natural bristle brush. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful. Such a nice table.
I think so too!
Nice work.
thanks.
Fantastic!
thanks.
A property fitted and centered drawer front is a mark of craftsmanship. Excellent work!
Thank you. I appreciate you watching.
Yeah, that's bullshit. Saying "don't remove your guards" while you remove your guards is hypocritical. Either lead by example or stop playing make believe. It was nonsense when Norm did it, it's nonsense when you do it.
You’re right, which is why I dropped it after my first few videos.
Cant you use a steam iron for the first one? 😂
Why didn't I think of that.
Completely agree about jigs. Accurately made, they make such a difference to the ease of building the final piece. The clock reminds me very much of Voysey. I made several versions of a Voysey clock with different columns configurations and with tempus fugit as the clock spacings. Then my wife and I went to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London (which is the Mecca for Arts and Crafts afficiandos) and saw an original Voysey. My copies are about 12” high (which I thought was in proportion); the original Voysey was over double the size. That shocked me.
I'm not familiar with Voysey. I'll have to look him up. I really appreciate you watching the vid.
thanks for sharing! Love the clock!
Thanks for watching!
You make it look so easy!
Thank you.
Cool!
Thanks!

Thank you and thanks for watching.
Great to find a new craftsman... Your work is highly detailed and creative unfortunately I couldn't hear your explanations. Be helpful with a clip-on mic. Loved the finished piece... Something we never see here in Australia.
Thanks for watching. You are right about the microphone. Been kicking something like that around.
Superb!!
Thank you.
Bravissimo 👏👏👏 Gran bel lavoro 👍👍👍
Thank you.
Love the Green and Green pegs.
Thanks and thanks for watching.
I love this , I'm partial to this style and you did a great job on it ! The only thing I didn't like is the door rattle which can be easily remedied with some shims behind the panel. It's beautiful !
Thanks. I appreciate you watching.
Excellent work.
Thank you.
Bravo 👏

@@lesmasonwoodworks the pleasure was mine!
Fantastic build. Lots of good little tidbits to use watching the process and beautiful pieces too.
Thank you and thanks for watching.
I am a sucker for anything Arts and Crafts. Our home is full of Arts and Crafts details, frames, table lamps and furniture. All the 2nd fix woodwork plus many doors are shop made out of European oak. As I sit here, I’m looking at a cherry bookcase with many Greene and Greene details - again made in my shop. My wife and I spend many happy days visiting authentic Arts and Crafts houses here in England. Skill is universal whilst taste is personal. So, personally, I would have stayed with cherry for the drawer fronts; but I particularly like the shaped drawer fronts. Many of my pieces feature the cloud detail but I have to admit that I had not thought of using it for drawer or door fronts - that will be on my next A&C. Again, no criticism intended or implied but a few “differences”. When I made my bookcase, I could use a Morticer. Now, my body won’t let me and so, I go with dominoes. I make the plug holes either on a morticer (just a couple at a time before I have to give up) or the square hole punch by Veritas. I use either ebony or bog oak for my plugs. Clearly, neither Greene and Greene or Morris or Gordon Russell or Barnsley or whoever used poly varnish. I don’t know about G&G, but looking at detail at my originals, I think it probable it was a shellac sanding sealer and then paste wax. Like most woodworkers, I don’t have a dedicated finishing room. So, I want a finish which cures quickly so that I can reclaim my bench and prevent dust contamination plus, ideally, needing only one coat. So, I now use 2 pack hard wax oil. Late last year, the Wood Whisperer published a YT video reviewing 2 pack HWO. Well worth a look. His overall winner was Natura Onecoat. I had never tried it - not yet over here in the UK - but they were kind enough to send me a sample. Love it. One coat gives a durable mid-level sheen and, within an hour of applying, I can carefully move the piece to one side. It does cost more per can but a little goes a long, long way. The makers say over 55 square metres per litre. I think that’s an underestimate. This week, I finished a half moon table and used only 125ml for both sides of the top. I’d really recommend you trying it out. I’ve subscribed to your channel and excited to see what you build next
Thanks for watching and subscribing. I'll check out the Wood whispers video. Finishing is one of those things I never quit looking at.

Stunning !
Thank you. I appreciate you watching.
Outstanding work. You inspire us mere mortals.
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Hi. Beautiful design and execution on this piece. Is it your own design or from plans? I always enjoy seeing fellow woodworkers using tools I use! It somehow lends credence to my decision to buy THAT tool. I believe we have the same router, orbital sander and band saw. As an aside, yours may be the first workbench I have seen made from cherry.
Thanks and thank you for watching. The piece is my own. This one is the fifth one of this basic design I've made.
