ONE OF A KIND Pencrest 300 Prototype Box Fan - Overview and Demo!!
มุมมอง 8199 หลายเดือนก่อน
What you are looking at here is a very rare one of a kind prototype Pencrest 300 box fan that Lakewood produced with a 6 wing blade set instead of the typical 3 wing set! Best we can tell this was designed to be a competition to Lasko's 5 wing box fan at the time but after making this one and seeing how it performed they decided to go back to a 3 wing set! Not something you see every day!

Nice show I am going to try to make the next one! Thanks for taking me along👍🏻
After watching this I'm getting cranked up for the shows next year! Can't wait to get back to 'em...
Thanks lots of nice engines. Especially like the 4 cylinder Fairbanks. Would like to see one making electric power someday.
Lots of col stuff there. Thanks for the video!
Real Nice fairbanks start up Colin !!!🎄⛄
Thanks Will!
Great show! Thanks for putting this video together.
Yeah they are really getting better and better with time! That place is certainly growing quite a bit! My pleasure! Thanks for Watching!
Imagine running that on a static phase converter
I can't lol. Must have been wild to see it just fire up on full power when it was installed in the building back in the day! Thanks for Watching!
Can you identify an old box fan with no tags or writings for me?
Probably, but you would have to send me pictures.
@colin_5839 how do I send them...I've never sent anything to someone off youtube
@Malcomb35 Facebook messenger would be best if you have it, if not I can give you my email
This is super cool; I too collect vintage fans live it man!!!
Thanks! Cool, glad to hear there's another one of us into this LOL! Thanks for Watching!
I have a similar ideal and I think you are correct about the vibration effecting the carb float. Mine starts easily but is not very well balanced and must be on a heavy cart or it bounces all over
Yep that sounds about right! A lot of engines back then weren't balanced... but it didnt matter when the equipment they were bolted to weighed 3 to 5 times what the engine did LOL. If you can get it tuned in good so it runs nice and slow then it won't bounce too bad at all so I suggest trying that if you haven't already. Thanks for Watching!
I just picked me up a 10" oscillator. But it needs A LOT of work! Do you know why they called Trade Wind?
Sweet! I have one that's also in really rough shape lol. I think it was just a model name, much like any other model. Not entirely sure why they got away from it and started making basically the same fans with the regular GE logo on them though. Thanks for Watching!
Good video, I've been applying oil to my fan but it doesn't last long before seizing up or making noise. Last time I disassembled it, I realized the "permawick" material was crumbling and useless. It started making noise again today and sent me down this rabbit hole, and I'm absolutely going to try cutting up some felt to fit in there.
Thanks! Yeah I've done this to countless fans myself now and it always makes a MASSIVE difference! Highly recommend! Good luck with the conversion, let me know if you have any questions! Thanks for Watching!
Super cool fan, Colin! 1898 incredible condition for its age. I always wanted a brass blade fan, but you know too well I don't need any more "addictions," lol😂, another "fan"tastic video, buddy! Thanks for sharing with us!!
Sure is!! I think this one had been restored at one point, but even so it's in amazing shape! Hahah, one can never hurt anyone! Plus, even if you did get sucked in, at least these are cheaper and smaller than engines lol! My pleasure! Thanks for Watching!
Hey, do you by chance remember where you got those oil wicks from? I've been needing some new wicks.
I don't remember off the top of my head but if you check out my original video on the conversion I believe I show the original McMaster Carr number in the video. Hope that helps! Thanks for Watching!
How did you get the fan blades off?
I just carefully pulled on the center of the blade hub and it slid off. If you spray a little penetrant spray into the hole in the center of the rubber grommet that holds the blades on it can help them slide off easier if yours is being stubborn. Thanks for Watching!
great looking fan, the grille is fantastic. on the lookout for one of these now!
Thanks! They're around so I'm sure you can find one! The 4 bladed ones are the hardest to find, bu the 3 and 5 blade ones are definitely fairly common! Thanks for Watching!
I've been looking at a few of these engines and they are very interesting! I've noticed from later versions that they were made in Lansing, MI, which is where Novos were made. It really makes me wonder if they partnered, or had some kind of contract since the bottom ends are so similar? Haven't seen another one as early as yours though.
Interesting! Surprised that you have found more than just one around LOL! Interesting! There was also the difference between the regular "Ideal" and the "Goulds Shapley Muir and Ideal". One was made in the US and one was Canadian I believe. From what have been told mine is GSM Ideal and is a rarer variant at that, but without the tag I am sadly just going based on what other collectors have told me. Either way they are really neat and nice running engines so if you have the change to get one I recommend it! :) Thanks for Watching!
That fan is superior to what they make today!
Sure is!
1898 - WOW! And old man Tesla was still around at that time!
Yessir! Thanks for Watching!
I thought these had a separate start winding on the first position, maybe that was earlier fans
Nope, they work like a modern shaded pole fan motor believe it or not! Thanks for Watching!
Thanks Colin thats a cool old rare fan and it did have a distinct sound like a cessna taking off in the distance
@@kevincragg2959 Sure is! Definitely a bucket list fan for me! And yeah that's a good way to put it lol! Thanks for Watching!
So with the early fans, you could stick your fingers into the blades, but with the earliest fans, you could stick them into the motor too! Incredible piece. Any particular reason the bearings were replaced when it had a 120s+ coastdown beforehand?
@@Xyspade Yes, this fan was made in a time when common sense was more common and people were smarter and didn't sue over stupid stuff lol. Yes, spindown time is poor measurement of motor health, it's often the fans with new bearings that are tighter and have shorter spin downs and fans with really worn bearings that have long ones. This was one of those cases: worn bearings mean excessive clearance and a little less friction so it coasted for forever. Thanks for Watching!
Wow, a Tesla that’s actually cool.
@@DBVintage Hahaha! You know it! Thanks for Watching!
Pun intended?
Wow! That's an old one. And she looks and sounds great!
@@paulsto6516 Sure is!! Thanks for Watching!
Wowzers!!! So it doesn’t have a “start” switch? Looks black in the video. Must be a super dark green. Liekly a very old green paint job? Is the orignal finish japan or black paint?
@@AmeriFanPicker Nope, aside from the dead spots this thing starts and runs like a more modern shaded pole motor would- no start switches, just select a speed and it goes! It's not a super super dark green, definitely lighter than GEs green with the AOUs, maybe it's the lighting or your computer screen making it look darker. I actually quite like the color, but apparently it's not original. Whoever did it definitely did it a long time ago and did a very nice job with it! Not sure about Japan or not, I'll have to ask Rob! Thanks for Watching!
That will easily chop a leg off
If you aren't careful it might LOL! Thanks for Watching!
@colin_5839 lol, I partially speak from experience, because last year, I accidentally kicked a vintage Gilbert desk fan while it was running. Since the rear part of the grille is practically non existent, my pinkey toe made contact with the metal blades, and it was almost chopped off. Thankfully, I went to the hospital and got it fixed.
Nice, the old engines are very interesting
Thanks! Yeah they sure are! Some might even argue they are addicting LOL!
I’ve got the 12 inch versions, they are just great fans.
Nice! yeah they are pretty damn good! Thanks for Watching!
I rarely comment on videos - but this thing is awesome. I saw it pop up in my ebay feed and was sad when it had already sold. Such a cool piece of history. I actually have one of the massive 5-blade Lasko fans that this purportedly would have competed against, and I tell you what, that thing is just as deafening as this seems to be lol. That thing is built heavier than almost anything else i own and will never leave my collection. Thank you for sharing this!
Ohh damn, that's wild that you also saw it! Guess Rob beat you too it LOL! Yeah it's certainly a very unique piece of history so I'm glad it's in good hands where it is being used but also preserved! Ohh man lucky you! I really want to find one of those someday! Probably the closest thing to this monstrosity there is LOL! Thanks for Watching!
I can’t get to the 4 screw behind the fan blade. Nothing lines up to get a screwdriver on it. Any suggestions.
Pull the blade off first, you have to do it to take the rest of the fan apart anyways. Hope this helps! Thanks for Watching!
Nice, I have a vintage Gilbert desk fan, the windings on that fan are also very dark, because when I first got it, it was sized up and it had a loud buzz, I do think it is caused by heat because before I repaired the Gilbert desk fan, the motor will get very hot after a few hours of running, thankfully no burning smell.
Yeah it sounds like it locked up and got real hot at some point. Check the amp draw, if it's within spec then you are probably alright. If not they aren't too terrible to rewind! Thanks for Watching!
@colin_5839 I can't check the amps because I don't have the tools, and I'm only 15. Plus I don't know the model, and the info tag is destroyed.
I once had a lakewood to c-122 with the scratchy bearing sound even when I oiled it, later I took a look at the bearings and it was deeply scored, and one time I accidentally ripped the entire bearing out, so I think the bearings are deeply scored on that fan.
Yep that would definitely do it! I bet the bearings in this thing are super scored up too....
When is the service video
Yeah this is one I just haven't gotten around to yet. I have sooooo many projects waiting and constantly have new ones rolling in so sometimes it takes me a bit to get around to some of the other ones. Not that I've lost interest in this fan, I've just found some more interesting stuff to work on recently.... Thanks for Watching!
what is a franken fan?
A fan made out of lots of different pieces. One could also call it a Johnny Cash Special LOL! Thanks for Watching!
I love to see when people appreciate and focus on specific antique items, I just love anything built from before my time, it’s just such a different experience seeing something that was built with the purpose of lasting a lifetime, compared to something built with the purpose of breaking in a few years (if you’re lucky). It makes me sad to think about when, how, and why the mindset ever changed? Surely greed isn’t a new concept that began when everything started being made from cheap plastic instead of the high quality metal we see here, right? It’s such a shame we allowed corporations to take everything over, pushing us towards an unsustainable future, and ruining the quality of our day to day lives…
Hell yeah! I'm the same way! I might only be in my 20's but I miss the days when things were built to last and be serviced. Well it's the combination of cooperate greed and people always wanting the latest greatest new shiny piece of crap product and having no interest in doing any form of maintenance on anything. I do strongly believe that if we stopped this behavior the world would be much better off for many reasons.... Ohh well, sadly the only thing you can really do is boycott the throw away society and repair, use, and preserve the old stuff! Thanks for Watching!
@ You’re very wise for your age, and not just because I agree with you 😂. I only started really getting into vintage items after finding this really cool radio cabinet from the 1940’s - it had this fold out record player, and tiny flip up lid for the volume and stations. It was in rough shape cosmetically, but built very solid (I didn’t even want to use it as a radio anyway) so I ended up gutting, and refinishing it (probably the first time I’ve ever used tools, and was well into my 30’s) then turned it into an entertainment center for a bit, but now I think I want to turn it into some kind of jukebox/audio player with a computer (only because my old stereo setup is too big to fit inside). The only thing is that I’m not handy at all, but for some reason I’m pretty good at refinishing wood furniture, and ended up doing a few projects since that. I’ll tell you one thing, old sewing machines make pretty awesome desks/tables (There are specific ones, I think it’s called a “parlor sewing machine cabinet” where the machine slides straight down into the body of the cabinet, it’s just really cool, and you can find people giving them away every once in a while. Nice to meet you BTW! Oh, and I just tried to take apart my old fan (which is how I found your video) but It might be too advanced for me, I had no idea about the complex wiring or how difficult it would be to even get apart, but the biggest thing that stopped me from going forward was that the thing is caked in grease! You probably said it in the video, but what’s a good first step for getting it off? like spray the whole thing down with some cleaner, or something else? thanks bud.
The valves are fine or it wouldn't be running like that😮
No they are in fact extremely worn out. The guides are incredibly worn so there's lots of lateral play meaning they don't seat the way they should and the valve seats and surfaces are also pretty worn based on how the valves seat. If it were any other engine in my collection all that stuff would get fixed but again this one is purely a neat display piece because of the conversion I did to it
Keep oil in it and it will run forever
That's the goal!
That runs pretty good that flywheel helps Don't worry about the conditioner or the compression or it wouldn't be doing that
Compression's pretty low because of how worn it is but it's got enough to run
You have to have a governor that will kill the spark but you need heavier flywheels. I don't understand why you would want to do that but go for it
It was a simpler way to make it into a hit and miss engine that didn't require extensive machining and modification. Makes for quite a show piece too! People can never figure out how I did it LOL!
It doesn't matter as long as it isn't knocking As long as it starts and runs good it's okay fix one thing at a time
Well with my engines I always completely tear them down and completely rebuild them before running them. Oftentimes there are plenty that people had been running and the crank pins are worn way undersize and the rods are worn way oversize, the bores are tapered and out of round, and the rings have massive gaps. Sure they might run ok but I just like to go through them and make them right. That's where the fun in it is for me and also I don't want to worry about having them be difficult to start or beating themselves to death internally when running. This engine is really the only one I have that I know is super worn out and run anyways because I made it into a hit and miss engine and run it as a display piece.
David Bradley
Not it was actually from a Waterbury walk behind tractor, not a David Bradley. As far as I know DB only used the larger number series engines like the 14 and 19 on their tractors. Thanks for Watching!
It’s not the 60s or 70s it’s a 1950s Dayton fan
It was actually made in the late 1940's as the title of the video specified. Thanks for Watching!
I have the same fan and mine has developed a rattle every once and a while, when it gets shaken a bit or is oscilating it rattles, then sometimes it stops, then sometimes it rattles again. Any ideas of a quick fix?6
Yeah mine vibrates a little too sometimes. I'd start by checking that the blades are in clock and balanced and that the rubber bushing that holds them on the shaft is still good. If that's not it I'd pull the thing apart and replace the thrust washers and also oil the bearings / regrease the gear box while you are in there. Hope this helps! Thanks for Watching!
Nice, I have a similar fan to that but it's Eskimo branded and is seafoam blue edit: I think all of the Mcgraw Edison box fans from the late 60s had a nail, because my Eskimo box fan, also from Mcgraw Edison has a nail holding the wires in
Very nice! Probably the same fan just one of the many rebrands they had back in the day. Thanks for Watching!
I have one since 1992 in Costa Rica, the buy second hand today work 100%-24hrs all days, i adore too much my Sanyo table fan.
Very nice! They're great fans! Thanks for Watching!
Nice video! I will see you at the next show 👍🏻
Thanks! Looking forward to it! See ya then! :)
Nice show Colin thanks for showing it , like to get down there for a visit but but this work thing gets in the way of our social life , neveg know some day 👍
Thanks Kevin! My pleasure! Yeah you definitely gotta come down and visit at some point soon! Our fall show is November 2nd and 3rd and if that's too soon then our summer show is usually the weekend after the 4th of July. Hope to see ya there someday! :) Thanks for Watching!

Sure is! You will have to come down and see it in person sometime! :) Thanks for Watching!
Oh wow, that’s amazing. What decade would something like this be from?
Yeah it's a neat piece! I believe it's from the teens or 20s. Thanks for Watching!
Nice show Colin !!
Thanks Will! If you are around on November 2nd and 3rd that's when our fall show is! :)
