Well here's something you don't see every day: an early 1900's Delco "X-Ray Plant" Generator! What you are looking at here is a very rare one of a kind prototype Pencrest 300 box fan that Lakewood produced with a 6 wing blade set instead of the typical 3 wing set! Best we can tell this was designed to be a competition to Lasko's 5 wing box fan at the time but after making this one and seeing how it performed they decided to go back to a 3 wing set! Just found your channel and I'm excited to watch some more of your videos. I love old engines but don't have one yet, except for what is on my tractors. I clicked on the rest of your videos only to find that you also are into fans, me too! I have lots and lots of fans, don't find very many people into those though. Fans are just as cool as motors but most people overlook them. Anything pre WWI is awesome and plenty on through the 50's. I want to get a small antique engine and maybe run a generator off it but I never see them up for sale. I need to find a show like this.

I noticed with the valve cover off and by turning the engine over by hand the valves rotate. My guess for leaded gas? All I know these ole relics hate this California gas. I had to mix a tad of diesel for mine to run smooth. Don't know if this lead substitute works. If not I'll be hitting up a buddy that works at a private airport for some leaded av gas. Unfortunately, your best shot for a new motor housing is probably to find a cheap parts fan somewhere. Luckily these fans are still extrememly common so it shouldn't be too hard to find, however, I don't know of anyone selling parts for them. 3D printing one could be an option, it would just have to be a plastic that's fairly heat resistant because these motors tend to run quite hot. There are usually two, one in the front of the shaft and one on the back. Some units have four. at 9:37 you can see the white spacer and the black washer in your video. It might not be a washer in this example. I've seen them in about 10 fans now and I lose them all the time. They feel like metal but are not metallic (magnet doesn't work). I'm trying to figure out what material to use for oil wick on a modern fan. I only have a tiny space to push something in there. These washer style ones don't seem like they would work so well in my application. Are those felt washer wicks literally wool felt?

    • @colin_5839

      These washers don't fit into everything nativity. They are just a great material for oil wicks and can easily be cut and reshaped / resized to fit into most fans I have seen. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what exactly they are made of, but they're cheap enough that it's worth a shot at trying to cut them down to fit!

      It sounds like you had a winding short out and fail in the motor. Id start by taking it apart and doing a visual inspection of everything. Then get an ohm meter and measure out the resistance across the windings and lets see where you are at.

    • @colin_5839
      @colin_5839 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Damn that's too bad! That's why I always advocate for revarnishing these things when you have them apart to service them! Helps extend motor life and sometimes can prevent them from going poof! Chances are you are seeing motors meant for modern attic fans which are only a single speed instead of 2 and they also have the wrong size shaft. Your best bet is probably to find a parts fan, especially if you can find another McGraw Edison or one of their many rebadges because then the motor will be a direct fit. Most box fans used a 1/2" shaft so finding one with a 3/8" like these used is a little difficult. Good Luck!

    That is beautiful, the way it runs, pure mechanically, not one electronic sensor. Awesome.

      Dziękuję! To zdecydowanie fajnie działający silnik! Zazwyczaj wszystkie części dostaję od Willa Woodwarda, ale nie jestem pewien, czy wyśle je do Polski, czy nie. Zawsze możesz skontaktować się z nim na Facebooku i zobaczyć, co powie!Dzięki za oglądanie!

    From the time it fires how much is the RPMs and when it cost down just before it fires what is the RPMs . Was thinking if I e could be used to power a generator to charge batteries and the batteries power an inverter to power part of your home

    • @colin_5839
      @colin_5839 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't have a tachometer so measure the exact speed but it's only turning a couple hundred RPM max. I wouldn't use a hit and miss to run a generator because the speed isn't consistent so the voltage would spike and droop constantly. If you want to run a generator with an antique engine you need a throttle governed engine that hits every time and maintains a consistent speed. Thanks for Watching!

    when the contacts in the igniter open, it makes the spark, not when it closes. the spark comes from the magnetic field in the inductor collapsing.

    You probly have the tools to straighten the crank. Do it the same way a push mower is done, with a hammer & a piece of pipe.

    • @colin_5839
      @colin_5839 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a very crude method of doing it and can very easily end up making things worse. When I eventually am able to do it the crank is coming out of the engine and the wheels are coming off so the bearings and wheels don't get damaged in the process and it's going to be measured and put into a press and straightened. (Unless there's another way I'm not aware of that people do it in a controlled manner) Then it will get magnafluxed to make sure there are no cracks before being reassembled. The problem right now is that I don't have a press and I also have other projects that are taking priority so I haven't had time to do it yet. One day later down the line it will happen though! Thanks for Watching!

    • @Iowa599
      @Iowa599 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@colin_5839 it's only as crude as the person holding the hammer. Don't worry about existing cracks, either. it's overbuilt for what it was, which is 10x what you are using it for. really, I wouldn't worry about that lil wobble, because the bend happened outside the crankcase. but you are...so do it the safe way, start with a 16oz hammer & recheck after every strike. Don't hit it harder, just get a bigger hammer. I bet a 6lb hammer is all it would need. Ya gotta think about the mechanical processes available when that was built. The precision wasn't near what it is now, so everything was built very loose. If a farmer couldn't fix something with a hammer, pliers, and baling wire, it was junk.

    hook the engine to the rear wheels, put handlebars on that front wheel, and bolt on a seat! that'll be a hit-n-miss go-kart!

    How does the oscillating button piece remove? Is it just a pull till it pops?

    • @colin_5839
      @colin_5839 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Unless there is a screw down the center of it, it is just a snap on thing. If possible I try and move the snap fingers on the knob a little with a small screw driver to put a little less force on it, but that is rarely possibly unfortunately... If there is a screw keep in mind it might be reverse thread! Hope this helps! Thanks for Watching!

    Thanks. I just got a toastmaster with the 3 metal blades. I just oiled it (without taking it apart). It barely has a rattle on high speed anymore but still rattles on the lower speed. Does that narrow down what is causing the rattle?

    • @colin_5839
      @colin_5839 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is mostly likely due to worn out bearings. These fans were both made cheap and usually beat to hell across their many years of service so that plus the motor shaft really being undersized for the size and weight of the blade means you very often find that the bearings are worn on them. Other than that, assuming it's in good balance, it could also need some fiber washers. Always a good idea to replace those anyways, especially on fans of this vintage. Thanks for Watching!
