Great acquisition! Needs a lot of love. As you found out each spark plug represents a cylinder. Bloody good show mate! You can’t kill these. I used to own a 1971, 6 cylinder. Now into a 2004 Disco and doing up a 2005 D3. 👍🏻🙏🦘
Besides overdoing it with 800 grid, there is nothing wrong with using some glass. I have an 8 mm glass plate for the same purpose. I'm a machinist and blacksmith btw. You did all the right things one should do to get it running trouble-free. Nice work young man. :)
I've just bought one just like this!
They are nice little motors just make sure you check operating temperature with a heat gun. So long as you are under 50 degrees on the head you are good. Make sure to flush after every saltwater use in a bucket of water, above the lower unit.
bro i have a question . i got the same engine and it has massive problems to start with the e-start, but if you pull it starts right up on the first pull . if you e-start it sounds as if it backfires the pistons or something and it completely stops the starter motor . battery are fine i switched between 5 differend ones and on all 5 the same result . it only starts on e-start if you push start button only for glimbse over and over again until it starts running . you can not push the button and hold until it starts than it blockade completly
From what I can tell by your description it seems as though the starter is weak and cannot turn the motor over a full revolution. Correct? If so, check and clean all your connections from the battery to the solenoid and to the starter. Then do some checks with the starter and solenoid. A lot of this can be found in the workshop manual and done with a simple multimeter. In the end you may be up for a starter rebuild or replacement. But do all the checks stated above before throwing any coin at it. You don’t want to buy a new starter and have the same problems if you know what I mean 😂
@@BIGRIG2005. the motor turns the engine pretty quick but as soon as the engine want to start up it locks up like as the cylinders are flooded but it isnt . connections are all clean on all the batteries and the connections .
I had to rebuild the starter on one of my Mountfield Empress mowers. I had to admit defeat with this one because there was simply no way I could get the armature back between the spring loaded bushes at the bottom and that end of the motor was sealed - I have no idea how it was assembled when new looking at how it was assembled. Being an older mower I couldn't find a replacement but a bit of research showed the same motor was used in Atco cylinder mowers with a different top/mount. So I got that made a good starter with parts from both! You did agreat job on this. Top job dude
I love this. Always been a huge believer in repairing instead of replacing wherever possible. I collect and restore lawnmowers, electric fans and audio from the70s and 80s, love outboards and have had many over the years. As an engineer I admire and love your enthusiasm and knowledge with putting your skills to all sorts. Keep up the excellent work, new subscriber
Didn't realise the difference between an alloy and stainless prop.
Hope you had great Christmas. Outboard are such appealing things to me. Good work on this one

So your self Xmas 🧑🎄 ho ho ho gift turned out to be a Yama hahaha! Good practice for you and you shouldn’t lose on that one. Watch the sunburn though unless you’ve been into the Xmas cheer. 🍻🍷🙈 May 2025 be profitable. 🙏👍🏻🦘
Thank you for very informative sharing
I need a video just like this on the ford 3000 gas engine, 3 cylinder.
Nice find. You’ll need a truck load of boats for all these outboards! 👍🏻🙏🦘
Nice work there Bro , as you said a few missing parts and your laughing!
Interesting thank you i leaning a lot
Good video. I really enjoyed it. Great work on that engine. That thing looks amazing.
Steady progress mate. Nice job on the injectors. Some mechanics put a dot on each nut as it’s tightened so they don’t miss any. Do you test the copper washers with a magnet before figment. Some supply shops are dodgy. 🤔👍🏻🙏🦘
Yes most definitely. The magnet won’t pick up Good copper washers. The ones the magnet picks up get thrown straight into the bolt box because they won’t seal diddly squat 😆. Edit: I do the dot method a lot a work. Just a simple paint pen mark and you can look over everything once done to ensure it’s all tight, or if you missed something.
Awesome video and cool channel. I just subscribed. And where is part 2 i cant seem to find it? I may have to do this to my tractor. Hopefully not lol but i may have to. How did you get that metal cover off that covers the rear of the camshaft? Back there where the hydraulic pump gear is.
Many thanks 👍. In Part 2 I resealed the injector pump. Shooting part 4 currently, will be a very big video as I did a lot in this one 😂. I did not take the rear cam cover off. To be honest I have no idea how to, but I imagine it’s an o ring holding it in, maybe it pry’s out?
@BIGRIG2005. I'm definitely looking forward to part 4 and for the cover it does look like it might pry out. I watched a video of a dude in India install one while rebuilding an engine and looks like he used some sort of 2 part epoxy to put it back in. It was a great video but unfortunately I couldn't understand what he was saying lol. Keep up the great videos. I'm looking forward to more.
I found part 2 at: th-cam.com/video/t495KaJe-S4/w-d-xo.html
Carb clean on this motor would be a good video.👍
May do it if I run out of videos to do but as of current I have a few already lined up for posting.
Well that turned out shockingly good. It was fortunate that you had the donor motor. Sweaty job in the QLD heat mate. 😅👍🏻🙏🦘
Wat is roter head holes function
Looking forward to the 7.5hp fix, as I've got that motor. Thanks for the video!
Video won’t be too far away, hoping to get it done this week.
Mr Rig; you’ll soon be the go-to guy locally for outboard maintenance (and other things).👍🏻🙏🦘
I'm tearing apart one of these now and I'm having trouble getting the engine pulley off not the clutch pulley but the pulley behind it against the motor how did you do that? Thanks
I know the pulley you are talking about, I think I just used a prybar behind it to hold light pressure and then gave it a small tap with a hammer and it popped right off. There is a proper bolt you can get to pull it off the crank however.
Another quality job! 👍🏻🙏🦘
Thanks very much Grahame!
Good job 👍
Hi, from my own bad experiences- those old grey fuel lines are notorious for breaking apart and clogging up carb jets. I think the new ones are black and you can get from BCF etc. Also, I use new nylon washers for those two gearcase bolts/screws. Prevents any possible leaks. Great video!
You are collecting quite an array of aquatic equipment. What with the flotilla of boats and all the farm machinery you could gather some mates and form a small army. 👍🏻🙏🦘
Good job. Keep the outboard vids coming, big interest in them on youtube. Suzuki 2 stroke parts are hard to come by and hellishly expensive. Probably why the previous owner bodgied up the fuel filter.
It was waiting for the great flood? Another interesting find to learn how to fix it. 👍🏻🙏🦘
Are you into golf? If not, what will you do with the engine?
Engine is going back into the cart. It is mums Cart and she wants it for a little property runabout.
I like it alot 😂
which engine is related to 4/65 engine
The 38TD BMC diesel is the motor in the 4/65. Was also found in the 4/60, 10/60 and later the Leyland 384, before the engine received a facelift and changed from 38T to the 4/98.
which engine is relate 4/65 engine
I see you do this, and I can't help but to laugh. My father did the same thing to his 532 Ritax Engine in the 90's. The guy that owned it before could never make it work. Sold it to my father for 250$ thinking he wouldn't figure out what was wrong with it. Engine had a slight warp and seals wouldn't work on it. He sanded it down on a piece of glass. Took about 4 days of work. Ran like a top after. The other guy had switched to a 582 by then. He always went to see my dad for his engine troubles after that.
Шлифовка производиться движениями как будто пишеш цифру 8, а не назад вперед..
So that Yamazuki has just been waiting for you to ‘grow up’ and fix it? 🙈👍🏻🙏🦘
I had not really even taken notice of it until the last couple of years when I found more out about it. Then one day last week I thought to myself I would pull it out the back of the shed and get it going
@@BIGRIG2005. I dunno bro I have a 1972 Yamaha dt1 Enduro 360 with 4700 original miles on it I bought it and naturally it decided to blow a hole thru the piston 2.8 miles after I bought it and come to find out there were only 5 OEM pistons I could order and one original top end assembly now there's only 4 OEM pistons left in the market and imma have to get the top end assembly because I let my boss at the shop I work in install my piston rings and he fucked 'em up so bad the cylinder and piston nuked itself within Four minutes of it's initial startup and I was running a 30:1 premix fuel so it had lubrication that wasn't an issue at all
Very thorough work and guidance. 👍🏻🙏🦘
I have an exact same model, aciddentaly pulled the starter rope on mine and i have No idea on how to put it back in the starter, can’t find no tutorial either, do you think you could try and explain to me or possibly make a video? Would be very grateful🙏
Okay, no problems, but first I need more info. These models have two different starters. The one mine has, which sits to the side and turns the engine by a gear which raises to engage. There is also a starter which the later models have, which sits on top of the engine and spins the flywheel from on top. If you have the later model starter I cannot help you unfortunately as I have never fixed one sorry. Secondly, Has the rope become fully detached from the starter assembly or is it still attached and does not want to retract? If it does not want to return back in, the recoil spring needs repair or replacement. Sometimes the spring skips it’s little spot if you pull the rope out too far and it just needs realigning, that or it is very worn and needs replacement.
Its the exact same as yours, and when i pulled the other day it released and then it broke in half 😅 so i need to find an new rope but luckily i live on an farm so should be easy to find something alike and then reattach it.
@ErikJohansson-zq3up I will have a look at the bottom of it when I get home for you, but it is most likely very easy to fix. You will have to tie a knot at the end, wind it all the way around the starter assembly and then pull it a little through the hole in the cowl and then feed the knob through the rope and tie a knot at the end of that.
Solved it (kind of) i havent found an rope yet but i know how it works now. Thanks for the attention🙏👌
I have the exact same outboard. I always had problems with the Bendix type starter, so I bought a pull cord starter off the later DT3.5 model that sits on top of the flywheel. It was a simple direct replacement and works much better. The only issue I had was I also had to fit the later hood (cowling?). I'd thought I'd be able to simply cut a hole in the existing hood for the pull cord, but it sat too low and wouldn't close. Otherwise a simple job if you can source the parts.
Hi BIGRIG2005, thanks for the video. I’m south of you fellas and i have had great issues with obtaining quality parts for our Fiat 555c. You mention the injection pump is a VE Bosch? I have only been able to find a VA to VE pump conversion with cheap Chinese parts. I’d like to get in contact and ask a few questions?
Hi Trevor, yes the pump is a VE, but manufactured/remanned by DAG. I obtained the pump through South Burnett tractor spares in Wooroolin QLD. They ordered it direct from Italy though, so it took a couple of weeks to arrive in the post. I think it cost a little under $3000 with postage included, but it will definitely pay itself off as the machine starts perfectly everytime and runs like a Swiss watch.
Another machine added to the stable. 🙉🙏🦘
Put 35 carb on it and add timing
Did you change the oil filter with the new oil?
No. Unfortunately I did not have one on hand when I changed the oil. When I do the next service next year I will change that.
install the gasoline filter friend There is probably a lot of rust inside the gas tank ...i am restoring the same bike, is a great bike legal on the road and goes off-road also for weekend fun .. enjoy .. check the oil level from time to time look like it burns some oil ...
Thank you, these things are on the bucket list to do. The carb needs a good clean so that will be the next video. Stay tuned!
Excellent skills, Chap ! Greetings from S Devon, UK.
Cheers mate 👍
great video, i cant believe it ran like that, lol. what is the 3y3 designation? engine family?
Thank you 👍, yes neither can I haha. I believe the 3y3 is a designation code for the model of bike, as there are a couple of different xt250 models. I have also found all sorts of Yamaha bikes have a 3** designation code, so I think it’s just a Yamaha thing for identifying bike types and models.
Big job for Big Rig.
Are you still chewing? Lol. 👍🏻🙏🦘
No, don’t think I bit off more than I can chew with this one haha 👍👍
Good job again. It’s important to look after your Johnson, mate. 👍🏻🙏🦘😊
Congratulations on getting a job. Apprenticeship? Nice gift of the bike too. Ride safely. Cheers. 👍🏻🙏🏍️🛵🦼🤣🦘
Hi Grahame, thanks, yep it is an apprenticeship, as a heavy diesel mechanic. Bike is a great gift, only trouble is finding parts seems to be a little harder than expected 😂
@@BIGRIG2005. That’s great. I can foresee your place filling up with unloved machines like MartyT’s. 👍🏻🙏🦘
