Nemesis - When Losing is Fun and Epic // Board Game Review
In Nemesis, the odds are against you. Most likely, you will lose. Also, you might be frustrated with the amount of luck and randomness, long playtime, and player elimination. BUT, if you accept all this, you will be treated with an epic cinematic experience that your friends and you will remember and talk about for years!

Gizmos has a lot of positives - great engine-building mechanics, marbles, quick play time, interesting theme BUT a couple of fixable issues make it unplayable for me - a dispenser that does not work; iconography, card and player board design that I do not like. Actually, your statement that Welcome to the Dungeon and Skull fall into the same game category is spot on. Yoy helped me to make up my mind, what goes into my boardgame collection taht I am narrowing down to "crown jewels" only.
Here I beg to differ. This game brings the wonderfull CODENAMES experience to the small gaming circles - like 2/3/4 person. My experience tells me this is the size of the most common gaming enviroment. That is my my gaming group - familly, closest friends/realitves - all casual players. DUET offers an excellent way to get to know better the people that are close to you. Also, the tension of race is still there - bit it is a race against a clock. And I would not worry about repetitve pattern of planning and grinding. This is much beyond what casual gamers are willing to commit to. CODENAMES DUET is definitely a game that needs to be there. Otherwie, we would not experience CODENAMES game.
Really likewhat you are doing - and appreciate it very much. The way you defined your ranking system is one of the most smart AND useful I have seen. Color coded video gallery is such a great implementation of clear visual communication, right from the first glance. The way you formulate opinion on a game resonates really well with what I am looking for. Keep up your great work, Sir! For years I have been looking for a way to communicate, in an approachable manner, about boardgames. I love boardgames and I would like to plant this love in others. I was thinking about adults with familly lifes, those who are not geeks and have little time / attention capacity to do research or learn rules or play long and complex games. What you are doing is so adequate that I feel, I do not need to search anymore. I sincerely hope, that your channel grows and becomes more known.
Thanks, great review!
Interesting take. I agree, the text is way too small! It can play somewhat slow. Lots of steps. I think a lot of what changes the gameplay is how the monsters each have some ability that changes the meta. And when you play with 4+ players, you can really start getting into good battles around who gets what adventurer. The risk reward becomes huge! But it's also so easy to make a mistake. I think the Black Market expansion also adds a ton to the game. More cards and more choices. It changes up the meta in a good way.
I hard disagree, 3 is the best number to play at, a bit of chaos but not too much, and it's a filler game so that's okay. Warrior and rogue are definitely stronger than warrior and mage, but if you are playing with a casual player you can just give them that information to make the game more even. And the game is only complicated (for casuals that is) if you include the mage, just remove it from the game if that's the case. I played this game even with my mother and grandmother and had no problems whatsoever, in fact maybe the first game I saw them have fun with. Didn't play at 4 (probably too chaotic I agree there) or with the sequel so I'll not speak much about that, but certainly the characters are more complicated in the sequel so probably agree there.
WoW great analysis, you have 1 subscription from me, keep it going!
Oh wow: Red?! I LOVE this game. And we won on All strategies. Perhaps you should play with only 2 although when we play with 4, a 'double pick lane', one can still win. Sorry I don't agree with your assessment and strategy analysis. I DO like your video. :) Thank you PS We are all S/W Engineers and really dug into the game. ;)
What so you think about witcher old world in comparison
Hey. Nice review. I really like Ierusalem. I’m a Christian myself and finding a game about Jesus and the last supper, it’s just amazing. The game mechanics are strong. The game is fun. It has a race element to it because players start sending the disciples to the table and scoring points and you don’t want to miss out! It’s just fun and tense in the best way possible. And on top of that, the theme. I had to rate it a 9.5/10. Also because it’s so unique. And also components quality is good. It’s just a delight. It’s not a 10/10 just because it doesn’t play as good at 2players or solo, as it does at 3 or 4
Hi, I really like the nemesis oath, it set the right mind set and striped away any false hopes. You mentioned an extension with different dies which are more favourable, what is this extension and where to find it?
Your review is very good!! Really… it goes directly to the point!! It’s a very fun game! If you keep it for long enough, you can come back to it and you will have almost the same fun again! I don’t have the last 2… but I’ll be getting it as soon as I can. They were not released in Brazil as of 2024…
I agree.
Pick-o-min-o 🙂
Can't stop is a great game. Does it reward luck? Sure, but this is not a problem. However, my favourite dice game is Claim it! with 2 players (can be played online at yucata), and 2nd is Gang of Dice (can be played online at Boardgamearena). I dislike that neopren edition, agreed. I got a cooler edition with big wooden climbers.
My family like Pictures. I got all expansions now, four of them (don't have any promos). I like the XL photo expansion. Bigger photos. Both the USA and Orange expansions got new tools. This is a game to play each week? No, but it is fun family experience.
Well, it is a game of logic. Games like this should always be played over at least two matches with alternate start. 2nd player have an advantage? Well, let the less experienced player play 2nd then?
Yes, I believe that the game works best with the 6 basic tiles. I play it some online on Boardgamearena. However, I like Gang of Dice (also on BGA) even better.
Great video 📸
Thank you for watching! :)
incredible video. I love this so much. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you, Scotty, for your kind words! :)
You're not playing correctly. When you lose a tile, you must flip over the highest unflipped tile on the rack. This is the reason why your games are taking too long.
Thank you for you comment. We did play it correctly - we were flipping the tiles as you described above. As I pointed out in the video - it takes a lot of time for each player to be done with their turn + stealing brings you back to square one and effectively resets the waiting clock for you.
Just to clarify - I don't believe you must flip a tile when you "lose" due to stealing. Only when you lose due to the so-called Failed attempt (cannot take any tile or no worms).
The builings and streets in chinatown seems like a better board layout than the two vertical sections in this. It looks like a harder to distinguish blob of locations although it does look nice and colourful.
Yep, I prefer Chinatown layout too!
I don't want to sound butt hurt but this game is not tend to be played with people choosing one path and stay with it without trying to dip in other paths too. You must stop your opponents progress or else it would either be the most lucky one winning of the one picking the fire path. Well tbh, the game is subtlety trying to push you in the multiple path direction by "forcing" everyone to build up a defense against the fire anyway, but it's doesn't hurt too much to ignore so I understand is a thing people miss.
All good! Probably, you are right and playing multiple paths is the way to go in this game!
Hope you have great success! We love your mission .. to bring families together.
Thank you, Charla! :)
This one I didn't like. I tried on BGA about 10 games.
Playing it with people face-to-face might change your experience. If not, it is totally fine, there are thousands of other games to choose from. What are your favorites?
These days I mostly play on BGA, it keeps my leisure budget intact, and no need to buy more shelving.
BGA is definitely great for the budget! :) Unfortunately, this is bad news for designers, publishers, and game stores. The less money we spend on them, the less quality we can expect in return long term. I am fine compensating for their work. This keeps the hobby alive! Nevertheless, BGA is a nice supplementing service.
Excellent video ... I really like how you do your videos. Thank you for preparing them for us!
Thank you, Len; glad you like my videos! Feedback like yours is very important for creators. It motivates to keep going forward! :)
Wonderful excellent video. Thank you for taking time to prepare this video. I just heard about the game yesterday and now I have it here with me (from my local game store). My wife and I will have fun with the stickers!
Applying stickers with one's spouse is priceless! :) I hope you enjoy the game after that! Thank you, Len, for watching and kind words!
It's been a while! I myself haven't tried NEMESIS but have always been interested on it, but like you said in the beginning it requires to be in a certain mindset...like wine :) it feels to me like a more complex version of DEAD OF WINTER (which why I haven't pulled the trigger on it, as I find AWAKEN REALM games more fiddly than I'd like).
I have not tried Dead of Winter, but as far as I understand there could be one traitor, or something like this. In Nemesis, MOST players ARE "traitors" in a way that they follow their own secret agendas. This makes it a unique experience when you have to work with people who, most likely, want your character dead :) Regarding fiddliness - not too bad in my opinion. And all of that can be managed by one game master.
what a great a video - a very thoughtful and unique review. Euro games with mechanisms that make thematic sense shine for me, and Obsession really is a gem!! I stumbled across you as I was looking for insight about waterfall park, glad I did. You have a new subscriber!
Glad you enjoyed the video! :) Thank you for watching!
wow, like!

Thank you, yes, this has been brought up in the earlier comments and I have added a correction note in the description. Cheers!

Thank you for watching from the other side of the globe and for your kind words! Have a blessed day!
While I agree the game has a lot of luck and many factors out of your control, you do have limited control over the catch card you get back. It's not completely random. Let's say you're in a 4-player game. Eventually you're going to receive a hand of 4 cards. You pick one of those cards and one of the other 3 cards in that hand is guaranteed to come back to you. So if your throw card is 1 and you have a hand of 2667, you can take the 2 on this turn and 3 turns later you know you'll get a 6 or 7. Though you still don't have much say in the matter, you can squeeze out a few extra points this way -- at the cost of points by taking a suboptimal card. It's probably not worth it, though. Good review! I really liked the chart you made.
Thank you for your input! Yes, if you get 2667, then taking 2 would be almost a no-brainer.. if your throw was 1. if your throw was 7, good luck. Ultimately, getting 2667 with a 1 throw is in single digit probabilities, which does not make this approach a viable/reliable strategy. More like a fluke that you would be lucky to get once in a while.. more like a random event, which is the main idea of the video, lol Randomness is not necessarily bad by the way. I am preparing for a Nemesis review, and it should be called Ranesis because how Random and luck based it is. Yet, it is 10/10 for me. Go figure. Anyway, thanks for watching and great commentary! Have a blessed day!
So I bought this game a while back and went through the first scenario. I bought it because I’m told the solo mode is great and I wouldn’t be stuck with a multiplayer game with no one to play with. I pulled it out today and realize, I don’t know how to play it. I don’t wanna do the walkthrough again…
True story.. I was in the same boat.. Sold it.. and bought it back again! :) Mage Knight is like a boomerang, it comes back, lol! :)
Bad Company is one of the games that whoever I played it with (boardgamer or not) got excited and wants to play it again. It will stay in my collection forever. The only ''issue'' I have with it ( although minor) is that the dice reflect light (because of their goldish colour combined with white dots) and it's difficult to see the result on them under certain angles. 😆 Recently discovered your channel, very nice effort. Wish you the best.
Thank you, for your kinds words! :) BC is definitely a keeper! I have good lights so I never had any issues with the dice, but I see that could be an issue.. Thanks for watching, cheers!
It's a fun game on BGA, most of the issues are solved using the online interface.
Oh, that would work! :) Thanks for the reco!
Im into this boat, im the captain. I Will go all in to the GAMEFOUND PLEDGE. Thanks!!!
I assume you have friends who are willing to invest the time together with you - I am jealous! :) You will have a great time!
@@BoardGameDetectives not really. The most experts have criticized it. It has not worked with friends... but my wife and I love it, I know it is not the most recommended to play with two but we are crazy about the game
If you two love it, you can still enjoy it! I am sure you will have good times! :)
wow what an excellent review. subbed! i have owned tapestry for about 3 years.. still have no idea how to play it, my attitude, of course. and i love Lacerda titles.
Thank you, for the sub! :) Lacerda reviews are definitely coming this year!
what are other better games similar to bargain quest thematically?
I would highly recommend Valeria Card Kingdom. If/when you are ready to play heavier games, Gloomhaven, Mage Knight, Cthulhu, Nemesis and Too Many Bones also allow you to upgrade your weapons to fight monsters. Love all these ones. There are more but I have not tried them yet.
Hi! I’m a critic at heart so I loved this video. I’m willing to listen to any nitpick. With that being said, the one issue you bring up that I personally had an issue with is the board organization. I agree with your assessment that the spacing feels bad. With that being said, I play this online so the marbles getting stuck isn’t an issue, and the iconography isn’t really either, though I 100% agree that the printed cards should have reminder text to help newer players.
Good to see fellow critics enjoying my videos! :) lol Yeah, the online version definitely solves the dispenser problem, so I guess, my review is not applicable there. Thank you for watching and your kind words!
Part of the reason I love your videos so much is because you speak slowly! I have hearing loss, and so it is difficult for me to follow people when they speak quickly. I also love all the history you share (I have a MA in Modern European History, my area of specialty is Russia/USSR). I'm glad your story has such a happy ending.
Thank you, Stacy, for your kind words, and sorry to hear about your hearing loss.. That must be very frustrating.. Happy to hear you love my history detours! I often wonder if anyone cares at all to listen to those.. Time will tell. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day! :)
I remember the hype when tapestry first came out. I was a little bit more hesitant in my part because I had just tried out his game scythe and did not like it at all. Eventually after a few months or so (and getting a huge amount of negativity after its release mostly because of balance issues and thematic disconnects from being a true civ game) the game went on a massive sale on my area so I eventually got it. During this time, I think TAPESTRY was technically my first CIV board game and thematically a lot of people felt like it wasn't a CIV game in a traditional sense and my thoughts having played a bunch of other CIV games is yes they are right, but I still think it has the pillars of a CIV game however the CIV aspects are ABSTRACT and why I have no problem with that, a lot of people did. I personally like the abstract nature because in my mind I can kind of make a story about my civilization even if it is a bit whacky as you mentioned. Unfortunately, I eventually did sell my copy for a specific reason. I remember playing the game (after not having played it for a while), and I remember playing someone and I had finished my final era thinking I did quite fine and turns out that compared to that person I was doing quite poorly. What ended up was him playing for another 40 minutes or so and me doing nothing because I had finished my game already. Look, board game development is complicated, balance issues and stuff is totally normal and because of the way stonemaier develops, they can only give about 2 years on development time where tapestry probably needed to be baked in the oven for a couple more years. Another missed opportunity is while those models look GREAT, why didn't you place it on your WORLD MAP! I think that was a HUGE missed opportunity and having it done in your own tableau really misses the opportunity to showcase the world that players have created. In fact, while my friend enjoyed this aspect I think that column/row mechanic of placing your houses and buildings to your little civ sheet should have entirely been cut off, I'm not sure if the expansions make it more interesting but from the base game I felt they were not that interesting and didn't add anything at all. What I think they should have done is had less civilizations so that they can focus on more interesting asymmetrical gameplay kind of like how ROOT went about it. Either way, my ultimate problem on the game was that experience. I can't imagine what I experienced was something they were not aware of. I REALLY don't understand why the game couldn't have done something like CLASH of cultures did, certain amount of rounds and the end game could happen with a dice roll to keep going the game as a variant if you want it to be slightly more dynamic. I'm okay losing and being extremely behind but I cannot stand when a game OVERSTAYS it's gameplay far more than it needed to be and be demoralized that you were 100 points higher than me while I stare at the board for 40 minutes or to me what felt like an hour. It's the very reason why I don't like monopoly for this reason and why I didn't like OATH (despite appreciate the subtle nuances on the experience it was trying to create). I wish developers were a little bit more sensitive on the different type of players playing their game, and realise if a game has this game breaking state that can happen, that they would rework the game even if it is in the late development stage. Anyways, that's my two cents....thanks for listening to my rant lol
Wow, thank you so much for so many great points! - some players can go for longer than others, which is not good... - yes to placing buildings on the main board - yes to less but more refined civilizations - scores can swing wildly - it is what it is.. Regarding the buildings - they do serve the purpose. You need to plan ahead where you want to put those humongous ones. Makes your small building placement more strategic. Thank you for watching and for your input! Cheers! :)
I preordered Tapestry when it came out. I liked how whimsical it was. Also, I am not sure many people are aware, but the first games already mentioned the online form to help adjust balance between the factions. They identified during development that additional balancing would be necessary. I ultimately sold this game. While the gameplay was fine, surprisingly, component quality was a big let down. The main board was really low density, looked and felt cheap, and curved a lot, and the experience of sliding the food/gold/star/population markers was super weird. They were cheap plastic, and the tableau had a sand-paper-like consistency. So moving the trackers up and down was scratchy and unsatisfying. If the gameplay was more compelling or they had made the trackers from from the same material as the houses and other buildings, maybe I would still have it.
Now, that you mention this, yes, moving resources on the player board is a very unique experience! It does feel like sand-paper. What's funny half of people love it, and half hate it! lol Polarizing game indeed.. As always, thank you, Brandon, for watching and your input!! Cheers!
Loving your reviews, just the right amount of detail and the comparisions are very helpful. Thank you.
Thank you for watching and kind words! They help a lot! :)
How about, world Wonders, look forward to a review on it as well.
Thanks for watching and your suggestion! World Wonders is a polyomino game,.. which I am not a big fan of.. Do you have any other non-polyomino games you would like to be reviewed?
Domino Mask etymology - who knew? Also liked the -omino chart. The game looks super fun but $79 for non-deluxe edition is a lot. And $40 for the upcoming Supermoon expansion. Sigh. I need more birthdays.
Glad you liked the -omino chart! :) This hobby is very expensive but so rewarding! Hope you can get it. Thank you for watching, cheers!
Another good review! Sorry I don’t have any authors to recommend. I looked here hoping for more book suggestions.
Thank you, Betty! What are your favorite books?
@@BoardGameDetectives I read a lot of young adult fiction. I love the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman a lot.
Ha, interestingly, I have this book on my Audible Wish List! Ok, pulled the trigger and ordered it! :) Thanks for your reco! My Favorite Fantasy books/series: - Blade Itself - The Name of the Wind - Stormlight Archive - Mistborn - Magic 2.0
UPDATE: Sooo, I bought Mage Knight back!!! Had a chance to play it with a friend to realize that nothing replaces that experience! I did go with the base box, as the Ultimate box size (which does not fit on my shelf) is ridiculous..
good call new expansion coming next year
New expansion?? Take my money! :)
It looks amazing
Maybe it will trigger a release of a new upgraded base game with new design!
