Yeah it sounds like a no brainer for you then. N64’s are about to get to the point they need recapping too which might be what’s happening to yours.

I think what you said is valid. I sort of make the same point in my video. As I have a retro tink 4k. I think if you’re like us and you have the best upscaler or other versions then this console makes no sense really. However if you’re just dipping your toes in, maybe you already have the Pocket then I think for the price point you actually get a lot. I assume you wont have to mess with this like you would do with the mister(again i have one 🤣). Original pads just plug in and work, the same with all original peripherals. I know you can get adapter for the mister but you have to hope the core writer made them work. I pre ordered one cus im really intrigued with it, and i will be putting it up against an n64 with and without hdmi mod linked to a retro tink 4k. The modern world is very polar, it’s ok to not want a product because of valid reasons, that doesn’t make you a hater haha.

@@QTronics true and I think for content creators the hardware will pay for itself once it’s released and you guys can make more videos doing unboxing and reviews. Just based on my own experience with the Super NT, I loved it at first, but it’s just a dust collector after I went back to traditional hardware (snes jr. with component to CRT). There was a bit of adjusting settings in the NT’s menus to get the scanlines to look good as well. Up until the retrotink, it’s been really hard to replicate the scanlines and smoothing and blending of pixels of a CRT. Granted, I expect more filter options to be available for the 3D, but once it’s out and the hype dies down, I feel enthusiasts will ditch it for traditional hardware or a more robust upscaler. Nostalgia is a huge factor too. A lot of people remember the N64 from their early teen years playing multiplayer split-screen with the boys. But, it’s just not going to be the same trying to get some 30 and 40 year old friends together to relive those moments. Analogue’s business strategy, besides a dose of FOMO, is banking on nostalgia by touting the N64’s multiplayer goodness and recreating the look of a CRT, both of which are very difficult to recreate the magic. Not a knock against Analogue, they will continue to produce extraordinary hardware, but the N64 is definitely a product of its time with its muddy graphics and choppy gameplay. I think there’s going to be a lot of disappointment once these games are blown up on a huge screen.

There wasn’t any official mention of this was there?

@@QTronics no. They mentioned it being a possibility a year ago, but it doesn’t look like they were able to pull it off. That would be too big of a selling point not to mention and that kind of feature would get more people on the fence to buy it if it could increase frame rates of the games.

It shouldn’t do other than you wont get the library updates for things you played. The everdrives currently work in the Analogue pockets the same way.

The expansion pak is just RAM nothing will be saved to it. Your save would be on the cart it’s self so as long as the battery hasnt run out on the cart you’re good.

@@QTronics I like to use MG Chemicals Low Temperature Solder Paste it has a melting temp of 138C which isnt so low that the console will melt it, and isnt anywhere near the melting point of the factory solder. Something like 150c or 180c could be nice too I suppose. I find 180c still needs like a 300c~ hot air gun tho, but with 138C I find I can get away with being at 240C

I think you're right. Being able to upscale that image to 4k is going to be a feat. Unless they've had help from the like of Mike Chi ( the creator of the retro tink) as they do mention VRR and obviously if we're getting 120 frames out of it we can start to have some of the cool Black Frame insertion stuff. Again though the retro tink costs $750 so im not sure how they can do it for so little. The one thing that's making me think they had help is this "Analogue3D requires a 4K capable display to use Original Display Modes" I'm sure the tink 4k neds 4k 120hrz for the black frame insertion stuff. TBH my hope is they can give me a raw 480p image and then I can upscale it myself, as then I can chose to use their upscaling or the Retro Tink 4k.

@QTronics I genuinely hope this thing is everything that everyone dreams it is. I even ordered one myself because I do believe it will be a quality of life improvement for my N64 cartridge library. I'm just not buying this 4k sales pitch. I think it's just marketing. In recent years, we've learned you can say what you want in marketing without any real recourse. It doesn't even have to be true. Take Bethesda for example. Todd Howard lied from one end of the stage to the other. "Sixteen times the resolution" and "It just works" I think are the most famous lies out of that example. Ubisoft, Microsoft, Sony, Blizzard, etc. All do this kind of dishonest marketing. People need to question the companies more and if it turns out that they outright lied, then hold them accountable. Maybe a class action law suit or something. Not because of money or anything so small minded. Because of principle. Because of the need for consequences for bad behavior. Because this practice is becoming the standard and we the customer don't want that.

4K is needed only for the CRT simulations. Because 4K is enough at usual veiwing distances to make it impossible to see individual pixels, they just blend together to form a convincing approximation of a CRTs mask, scanlines, subpixel arrangement, phosphor glow etc. AFAIK analogue haven't made any claims about higher resolution rendering, "cleaning up", or even improving framerates for the many sub-30 fps (even sub-20 fps) games on the N64. They just say it will be accurate to the original (with all the compromises) and with a very good CRT effect.

@davidste60 The N64 doesn't use individual pixels it uses polygon rendering. As for the rest of your word salad response where you put words in my mouth and try to sound technical, I invite you to go back and actually read my comment and comprehend the difference between giving an example of lying in marketing and actually stating that a company has done so. If you pay close attention, you'll notice that I never said analogue was definitely lying about 4k or that they were going to upscale in a specific way or another. I said that I SUSPECT that they may be lying and that it wouldn't be the first time a company has done so, using the specific and well documented example of Todd Howard and his famous "sixteen times the resolution" and "It just works " quotes during his Fallout 76 reveal presentation a few years back. See the difference now? Great. If you wish to respond any further with any more ridiculous and disingenuous ramblings in an attempt to appear intelligent at my expense, then know that you'll be ignored. I was responding to your comment about 1080p being the best we could expect from N64 and that it generally tops out at 480 output originally. The 4K is relevant for CRT effects, not because N64 graphics themselves justify 4K in any way. In my opinion, MY position and statements were clear.

I never said it was a cash grab I asked the question if it was. Not sure if you actually watched the whole video, but I do fairly answer that questions. I even explain how much money it would cost to get a N64 to be playable at 4k FPGA is a form of emulation very low down but it still technically an emulation you even use the words recreation and simulate. Implying it’s not the same. The original hardware will have quirks this will not. also to get 4k images out they are having to mess with things and upscale. So again not a copy is it. I do agree that FPGA though is the closest you’ll get to a true interpretation of the original.

Did you watch the video? $250 is a lot for a console, nostalgia is high for the 90s now. Is the console worth it? Or just cashing in on a trend? If you watched you’d know my opinion

Hopefully you and your kids love it. There’s something nice about plugging in an hdmi and a power cable. Simplicity at it’s finest

TBH without a good upscaler the n64 looks rubbish on modern TVs. the cheap upscalers dont help much. However $250 is a lot to splash on a retro console

@@QTronics I do play mine on a CRT very rarely and use an official s-video scart lead (had the lead since release, hard to find) it looks really nice. I have 68 cartridge games some boxed and to tbh some of them haven't aged well the way they look on screen. I still like to play it now and then but it's not a retro console that draws me in to play but that's not saying the n64 is rubbish because i still enjoy playing my favourites on it when i do play.

@@retrostansolo exactly man. I think that’s a big reason why it hasn’t sold out and why there isn’t as much excitement for it. It’s more a knock against the N64 and not Analogue, but the N64 just doesn’t have graphics that have aged well. Blowing it up in 4k with fake scanlines on huge OLED screens are not going to make the graphics look less muddy. Nor is this going to make the games run smoothly. 20-30 FPS was the average for most N64 games. imo you’re better off playing an N64 on a CRT for the definitive experience. Jankiness and all. Not this tho.

Yeah too right, I mean the N64's are probably getting to the point they're going to need re capping soon. Plus the power supply is still using direct mains. Me and a friend did convert a N64 power supply to use USB C though :)

Im 99.9% sure it will. The pockets work with everdrive’s. And there are rumours krikzz(maker of the everdrive) has worked a number of Analogue products. Seeing as the cart works on a normal n64 then it should work on the 3d

it’s really not that far off from Analogue’s other offerings, and it’s especially reasonable given that their primary competitor, the Retrotink 4K - shown here around 6:20 - is $750.

If you only looked at the base line without any details it is expensive. However when you compare it with the alternatives it’s actually well priced. Remember this is a remake of a nearly 30 year old console. Analogue isn’t making these products for kids. They’re making them for old people like me. People whom are in their 30-40s, nostalgia for the 90s is high now. 30-40 year olds are expected to have disposable income and anyone into retro consoles knows it’s not a cheap hobby. I done mind paying premium prices for a premium product. Not only that but only having to have a power wire and hdmi, is much easier than getting your upscaler out.

Tax and $28 for shipping oh yeah and most importantly we haven't got not one demonstration haha

@@QTronics Apparently, adjusted for inflation, the original N64 was about $400 so this seems like a pretty great deal if you like Analogue.

I also did respond before the video was over, but was mainly just commenting on the sentiments that I see out there, video titles, etc. not your full personal opinion ;) So wasn't saying this to you specifically, just putting it out there :) I probably should have clarified that in my comment. I was at work though, and a bit rushed typing.

There’s a difference between product quality and business practice. All my criticisms against them have to do with their business practices.

@@SumDumGy That's valid. I know that a lot of people don't like the way they do things. However, they're not an evil corporation. I can see someone not liking how some of their releases went, but they aren't one of those companies that makes the world worse to live in. The way they do business in fact, has kept them IN business. Tons of retro companies have just disappeared because they didn't run them well enough. Sad, but true. Analogue funds their new projects by selling A) good products, and B) selling good special editions. They also keep the runs low enough to not put them under water. I wish they'd do more runs of some of the products that have been unavailable for a long time, but it's THEIR decision. I also wish scalpers weren't an issue, but that's not their fault, and they've actually improved quite a bit with making sure that people that want something get it. (the last two-three releases have been just fine. So, while I get that some people don't like how they do things, their business practices aren't some evil-empire sort of thing. Sure, you don't have to buy and support them, if something about them is distasteful to you, but saying their business practices are somehow wrong, is a bit of a stretch in my opinion.

@@DrJ3RK8 I really didn’t say their business practices are wrong. I did say I have criticisms. What have they changed in recent releases to deter scalpers? The one thing they haven’t done, and should do since they switched over to exclusively limited releases, is cap purchases at one per customer. That alone deters at least half of scalper activity while ensuring twice as much actual customer availability. They bank on Hong Kong to avoid taxes. Not only does this put customers in a position to incur international transaction fees but, in many cases, makes it hard to make purchases because banks often reject these kinds of transactions as potentially fraudulent. Their shipping prices are unnecessarily high. They don’t utilize the email newsletter they encourage their customers to sign up for as much as they use Twitter to promote their communications. They won’t accept the entire world isn’t on Twitter and they already employ an internal communications system. These are a few of my criticisms, off the top of my head.

@WardenOfTerra first off, no, I don't play my current 64 because it looks like shit on my TV due to no AV ports and not being willing to buy a good converter or other system, so I'll definitely play through all my carts again as many have needed a playthrough for a while. Also, i actually plan to use it at work (teacher) as an occasional fun reward with my students. And my kids love the n64, but as I said it looks like shit on any screen I own big enough to play 4 players on. My wife is also into gaming as a family and I've got controllers that will work on this thing coming out my ass so I just need the machine. And besides, if the day comes that I don't use it this is the kind of thing you can sell pretty easily, and looks small enough to store with my 4 best controllers and game collection quite easily

@WardenOfTerra I could be rude and say you are being jealous, but instead let's say you just assume others see it the way you do. So here are my reasonings to get this. First off my kids love n64 as it is, and my wife enjoys playing as well. But my main TV, the one I want us to play on due to size is hdmi only. I have a small screen for AV but it's a monitor, so useless for 4 players. My n64 is useless to me more or less right now and gets 0 play most years as a result, and a good upscaling option costs way too much, so close to the price of this that I'd rather not gamble on it vs a native output option. Second, I'm a teacher, and this will be something I can bring to work as reward and it will be fun for the kids because as much as they have siege and fortnite brain rot they do enjoy older stuff when I bring it in, they just don't have access to it in most cases so can't know that it's fun past hearing old men like me say it's great. Finally, this will be a future-proofish option to tuck away with my 4 best controllers (and a couple of spares probably) as well as my 20 or so games for future me, my kids, or just to sell one day down the road. And down the road will likely be a time when converting HDMI will bring its own headaches, so getting my Jungle Green doing anything more than decorating a shelf will probably be too much hassle for old me or my kids, or whoever buys it, but a $20 converter will probably exist.

I'm jealous, I wasn't around when the Super NT came out or Mega sg. I do keep looking out for a deal on one though. But on the flip side, I do have a super famicom, and all the tools to make a Super CIC ( region switch, de jitter, 50/60hz changer) plus with voultars edge enhancer. I think I'll be in a good position.

Same - playing on the Super NT feels totally different than any of the emulators, even the official ones on the Switch. It’s just a more “tactile” feeling in a way I can’t explain.

I hope they remake the super nt with updated features such as USB C and 4 player built in.

I have an Nt Mini Noir, a Super Nt, a Mega Sg, a Pocket and a dock. All these in classic black. I also have the Mega Sg adapters pack. I’ve basically been in boycott mode since I was able to get my Pocket/dock pre-order in because I really hate this company’s business practices. Admittedly, though, I crossed the line and ordered a black 3D. We’ll see if I come to my senses before it ships.

I picked up a used N64 and Cart with all the games on it from China and extra controllers all for under $100. Add on to make it HDMI is under $10. This way I am playing on Original hardware and its a million times better then these emulation boxes.

Yeah, I was saying if you didnt want to then buy the Morph. As you could probably just get away with the Morph as a scaler using the pack a punch cables.

I agree, the Tink 4k does do an excellent job, but you're right getting a raw Digital signal out is always going to be better. The average person however, doesn't have the ability to solder on a retro gem. Even then, when you start buying everything it gets costly. It will be interesting to get my hands on the 3d, but we both know what analogue are like. Might not even be in production yet XD

Yeah exactly, it's a weird one. As technically I have the Retro Tink 4k so I dont really need one. Not only that I have a Retro gem ready to install into my Japanese N64. TBH I just really liked the look of it, and I'm hoping it will pump out a 480i resolution too, then I can use the tink to upscale it. I'm really hoping it gets hacked, as like I said technically it has 4x the fpga size of the Mister.
