My goodness! I took a summer trip and spent 3 full days sunrise to sunset on the river. It was amazing! The fish there are quite peculiar.

Lol. That's true the Metolius is difficult.
Good video and it's great to watch the trout as they take the fly. One thing, don't move the fish back and forth when letting them revive. Their gills don't work backward. Just let them rest for a bit and then give them a gentle push as you release.

Fall River fish don’t run much they just flop around a lot lol still fun but way different than catching a fish that size anywhere else imo 🤷🏼♂️

Getting the right feel and perspective when Filming water is always such an interesting thing to try and do. That river is definitely not small, the flow is substantial, and it has some really deep pools. But the bits you showed made it look like a smaller creek, lol. Definitely some tough water to learn. Great fish!
ODF&W says Keep all small bass from John Day River. They are reducing they are preying on salmon fry as they come down stream. What is your take?
It was my first time fishing the John Day. I do not know enough to have a take. We did not plan to eat them so we threw them back. It's tough with non native species of fish.
Great review. I've looked at it and the FishPond too. Have not made a decision yet. I'm also interested in both companies' larger packs. I've got a trip coming up with hiking 1-8 miles (each way) and need more space for rain gear, lunch, hydration, etc. I would also use any of the items for a boat drift bag, so waterproof is necessary.

I used to fish there in the late 60's. There was never anyone there at all, the place was incredible back then.
Depended on where you fished. A lot of dead, sand bottom, water with pockets of holding water. The hatchery was always a nice section, and then there was my favorite pod of mayfly takers in the road bend pool.

Great video, great fish and great scenery: I liked and subscribed. I also subscribe to another Oregon fly fisherman who posts on TH-cam and in his videos, he is never wading in the Fall. I noticed you were barely seen wading: do you make a conscious decision to fish from the bank so as to not spook the fish, or is it prohibited/frowned upon? And are those native Rainbows or stocked?
Im glad you enjoyed the video. We mostly stayed out of the water not to spook the fish. I believe that the majority of the fish are stocked.
Another reason for minimal wading is the water temperature. It's around 40 degrees typically.

NWFFOF was my first fly shop, when they were out near Gresham. Several flies and my first St. Croix from there. The Shutes was the most amazing river I have ever had the fortune to fish/camp on. Many firsts. I've watched a few videos from there and it's great to see quality fish coming from the same places I and friends/relatives fished 30 years ago.
That was my first time fishing with NWFFOF. And it was a blast. It's a first-class outfit.
I always appreciate someone that actually uses their fly reel to get the fish in. So many people try to strip when they shouldn't
