I did some research on this one. - The prayer is expressing thankfulness, grace, goodness.. (definitely not badness haha!), pays tribute to sacrifice, and the themes of unity and remembrance resonate throughout. These themes are also deeply entrenched with Remembrance Day as a whole! I think it's great that this man was invited to kick off the acts of remembrance; and if you don't "get" that concept, well, keep trying! Do what you can.. Where I live (and work), the military is completely made up of people of many different backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities, etc. Whatever! - and that's totally fine! Its totally normal. In a way, trying to learn about and accept other people's culture is literally part of our culture; but also, when you're in the army.. you're just a dude. Or a gal. You know? Who you are, where you come from, doesn't really matter. You show up, you do the job, smoke n joke, shoot the shit (as they say), make friends, make memories, go home. Some of the funniest, kindest, most "switched" on folks I know are muslim; not to mention countless other backgrounds too. It goes without saying.. Racism has definitely been a problem in our military in the past; but now, good luck getting anywhere with that mindset bucko. You're not going to make friends. Everyone's going to say "F*ck that guy.", then you get sent to club ed or are given the boot. If ya'll going to get tripped up about an opening prayer at a proper remembrance day ceremony, you should come to Canada where our remembrance day Ceremonies can be over two hours long. And yes! it's not uncommon to recognize different cultures and traditions at those, and it happens all the time. (First nations is another good example!) but ultimately, its more about reflecting, thinking, and being thankful for the people (so many people!) who sacrificed their lives for us. So we could be where we are today. And if that man singing or chanting a prayer, giving thanks, asking for guidance and bestowing respect on meaningful traditions makes you angry? Well sucks to suck I guess.
