A lot of these points are evident in the new Gladiator movie. Weak motives/stakes, too many characters, changing themes throughout the movie, and an over reliance on referencing, but not fully capturing the magic of the first film.

Day 4,325 waiting for a gritty political thriller based on the original Wicked book. Which is almost unrecognizable in comparison to the stage play.

Disney sequels (save for a loose handful of exceptions) suffer when secondary writing staff reprioritize other "money-making" elements over theme + character. and young kids suffer as a result by not being exposed to really compelling characters experiencing challenging, frightening, complex problems and solving them. Even Moana in the first one as a character is less compelling then WallE, Remy, Lewis (the Pixar lunch table characters)

Everything about this movie impressed me even though I was hugely skeptical about the casting, the CGI, and the authenticity to the stage play. I think the long runtime is justified in order to flesh out the world building and hit more emotional beats of the plot than the stage play was able to. All the while, I think this might be one of the best, truest adaptations of a stage play that I know of. The music, the songs (no added "originals"), and the whole script (no shoe-in agendas, character deviations, or wink-wink moments) is very nearly identical to the play, and so it serves the accessibility that Jaimie mentioned. Wicked has exclusively been on NYC Broadway for over 20 years, and now the whole world can finally see the whole thing. For that it deserves huge credit.

Loved the jab in the movie at Euphoria that the brother makes to directly call out unrealistic teen shows/movies now a days haha

If I could meet me 18 year old ass, I would definitely tell him to keep on showing up and creating space for my friends. Push through the disappointments. Also to invest more into my extended relatives as I am seeing the distances grow as I approach my 30's.

one of the things i loved so much about the movie was the vague nature of his past. every choice in hirayama's life was very deliberate. whether that was good for him in the long run or not is up for him to decide i think? and that ending sequence where he smiles and tears up at the camera is a very very clear portrait of that. he knows he isn't "perfect", nor his choices. but it is the choice to smile and to continue onward that is so powerful, even if he is running from something. great video! it was interesting to hear your guy's perspective on the film. especially because i can tell you both enjoyed it but didn't get what i got out of it. it's a 5/5 with a heart for me lol.

I have been excited to see this film ever since I saw the trailer (like a week ago). I love Jenna Ortega, I loved the original film, I love Winona Ryder. Considering the economy though, it might be a couple of years before I do.

I enjoyed this movie. Not to the extent I was hoping for but the stunts and action were great, the cast was excellent and all the behind the scenes of the movie set sequences had my inner movie geek very satisfied! Great review
