I used your advice from your video from 4 years ago Last year.. It worked perfect. I did the same thing again this year. I can't believe how big your palm has gotten. :)
@markmalander9521 That's awesome! Yeah, it's growing tall. It did slow down a little this year.
@@jasonpollock9798 I have three around my deck.. Kind of like you did. The middle one really grew well. One of them my daughters dog peed on it and it kept burning it. I confronted her about it but I caught him peeing on it again. So now its the smallest one. I hope I get more growth this coming year :)
What about ventilation so mold doesn't grow
@@curtisortiz128 it's open enough with the cracks it's fine. Never have had issues. It's not tight.
Best video
Looks great! Love seeing the progress on your posts on Zone Pushers
@@ShoeTELEVISION Thank you!
Impressive dedication :)
I want to see it with the lights on!!!
My Needle palm had mold on some of it when uncovered in spring. The past 4 winters I don't cover and it seems to do better. I'm in zone 6 north of Pittsburgh. I have 2 Needle and 1 sabal minor unprotected all winter.
@@JackWilkinson-i6u oh then we are close. I'm in Clarion County. I left my needle palm uncovered last year.

I have gaps in my boxes also for ventilation.not sure if it actually helps or not but my palms do well with that method.
How many watts on the lights?
I’ll be covering my 4ft windmill next week or so out here in Bristol Connecticut. Thanks for sharing!
@@davidwight4643 Sure! Good luck.
Well done we all do things a bit different, whatever works ♥️🌹🌹🙏hers to a mild winter 🙏
Surprised that even 1,200 mini lights keeps it warm enough, but clearly it works. Incandescent Christmas lights are almost impossible to find now. None of mine are as tall as yours. I use plastic 55 gallon barrels spray foamed inside and stacked to protect mine. Omaha, NE 5b
@sashaeffer Yeah, they work great. It stays nice and warm inside.
I made the switch to mini incandescents this year after using C9 for the last three years. Lowes Home Improvement carries GE String A Long Constant On mini incandescents (white box). They're the only store I'm aware of.
@sashaeffer They keep them pretty warm. In fact, I'm going the other way. I'm getting too many lights plugged in. They are burning out the top string because of the load. Ugh.
Always fun to see what other people are doing with their palms.
@newyorktropicalgarden9364 I'm not sure it's right, but it works. Lol
That thing has gotten really big. Thanks for sharing your method it will help when I cover up mine in a few weeks
@@bluegrasspalms Sure thing!
Dude the lights for heat is smart
@@itsjakobcurry Thanks. They work great.
My friend in north Florida used the Christmas tree lights for years and works great. She got lazy and did not replace the year of a freeze and a couple of the palms died, the trees were about 10 years old 😢
@@credmon3346 Oh no!
I’m in Ohio just starting out I’m going to give this a try. Thank you!
Best of luck!
I overwinter my sabal minors the same way,and I guess I should keep them moist because at the end of winter they look like they have dried out
Thanks for sharing your method! Looks really good!
Looking good Jason 👍 liked & subscribed 😉
Nicely done , keep up the Zone pushing 🤗♥️🌴🇺🇲🙏🌴 Jose's Tropical Garden 🌴 Central NJ
Dude spends $200 to protect a $30 plant 🌱 lol😂
At that size, it is no longer $30…. If you buy a potted 3-4 ft windmill off the internet…it costs better than $200
@@Slo-rydeI paid $120 for one yesterday it’s about 4-5 feet tall.
@@IJUSTWANNAFLYDJIDRONES71 that is a good price for that size….Could you tell me where you got it?
Thanks!!
I don't have problem with drying with my windmills in carage but i have lost alot of washingtonias for being too dry.
Trachycarpus seeds don't need extra heat. Room temperature is good for those. I have done cold treatment to those seeds before germinating.
Cool, thanks.
Hey Jason, Burlap is also good to use because it drys out quickly. I am also in PA so we have about the same climate. Im in z7a . I cooked a palm using c7 or c9 lights before...dont wanna do that again. Your palms look great. The key is keeping them dry
I used burlap for a few years. Now I just use the insulation board. Seems to work good. We really haven't had any winter yet this year. Love it!!
the thermo cube makes sure the palm doesn’t burn right?
you could build a 10 ft wall enclosure turning back yard into a court yard, and then install underground air vents connected to a empty drain pipe system deep underground which will warm up the court yard to 45 degrees in the winter and cooling off the area in the summer. you would install a solar panel to operate the fan in case power goes out. then you can place the frost cloth over the courtyard in the winter turning that section into a zone 8b garden.
I'm not sure I have that much energy. Haha
Nice recovery!
hi hi................
All looks great JASON!
Thanks
Amazing property, must be hard work looking after all these awesome plants, the Trachy at 15:12 is very nice looking too
It's work that's for sure! haha Thank you!
Nice palm
Thank you!
Question, do you have to add the protective barriers on the outside? Or can I just use ropes and lights? Or can I use spray or wrap instead?
Update?
It's grown about a foot. It's doing great!
Nice palm and a great spot!
Cool Trachy, nice job
Thank you!
Where do you buy Needle Palms? Thanks
I got this one from mail order natives. It's really nice!
@@jasonpollock9798 Thank you. I just went to that web site and all the palms they had were out of stock. Maybe later on in the year I will try again. What USDA plant Zone are you in? Thanks again. Jack
@Nothing Lost I'm zone 6. Yeah, I ordered it back in February. I had them hold it until April and warmer weather.
@@jasonpollock9798 That is a great idea. I will keep that in mind... Thank you
How did your needle palm seeds turn out?
Is it possible if you added a frame support system for the protective box that it will stay upright?
Yes, that will be this year's project. I'll have to. Haha. It's getting so tall.
@@jasonpollock9798 that's impressive. Great job! Happy growing season
That’s a real gorgeous windmill 😍
Thank you!
If I live in zone 7 would burlap wrap and Christmas lights be sufficient enough for windmill palm?
Possibly! It would depend on some of the cold spells. Cold and moisture is the problem. If you can keep it dry it may work.
Yay it worked! Your palm is looking real big and has some huge fronds on it.
Id be very interested in seeing these palms inr, I live in Bethel PA and i want to plant a bunch of theses beauties in the front of my house this year.
They do great in Pa with winter protection. My big one is 7 years old and about 12 feet tall.
@jasonpollock9798 your don't produce seeds yet do they?
@Hello, Its Austin No, I only have a male. No female.
You made this look insanely easy. I thought it was way more difficult than that!
haha Thanks. It's getting harder. It's about 12 feet all.
If only I could build this for my 25ft tall palm trees😂
How long can you keep it covered like that? Do you cover it anytime it gets below 32F or can you leave it uncovered below that? I live in zone 6A in Ohio and will be attempting to grow one next year. Thanks for the video!
It's covered from November until March or April. It doesn't need light. The lights I use are just for heat.
Great job Jason and very informative for others who want to grow Trachycarpus f. palms in cooler winter climates. Cheers
Do your palms require any sun during the winter months?
What do you use to hold the foam box together in the winter? Tape? What thickness is the foam board? Thanks. Nice job!!
Do you have clay soil below? Your way is the common way.
