Homeschool House Calls
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 17 ก.ค. 2020
Hi! I’m Deven! A homeschool mom of 5 with 18 years of homeschooling experience & over 10 years of consulting.
After graduating from the University of South Alabama, I found myself planning to homeschool my two small children for their preschool years.
As kindergarten approached, I found that I loved homeschooling. I didn’t want to stop. So, we jumped in and never looked back.
No matter why you are here in this journey, I want to help you jump in. Distance Learning, Public School at Home or Traditional Homeschooling - Let’s find a way to make it better.

What are the PDF and answer keys for? Do the kids have access to that?
@@Linda-ww5mu Yes, the kids do have access to the PDFs. They are guided notes to the video, labs & help make the curriculum fuller. Answer keys are for you to grade them.
Would you be willing to share the document?
@@adrianebuettel3766 If I can find a copy, I will. My laptop was melted in the fire.
I can completely relate with going through and buying a ton of curriculum because it is so hard to find things that work. Most of the curriculum I've paid for has gone unused. I prefer the term learning difference rather than struggling learner or special needs. Everyone is capable of learning, it's just finding a way that fits their learning style.
It’s hard finding that perfect fit!
Are you happy using MiaPrep for you high schoolers? I'm considering switching to MiaPrep for the 2024-2025 school year for two of the high school core subjects.. Any input is appreciated
Yes, we have been very happy with it. The only part we don’t use is the math. We use Teaching Textbooks inside.
I received online assessment by a recruiter for MIA prep online school, what do I need to prepare for to complete this assessment?😢😢
I have not used the online school with my girls. My suggestion to prepare is old school. Get rest. Eat a good breakfast. DON’T worry. A placement test or assessment isn’t a pass or fail test. They just want to know where the student is inside the curriculum. Where they place best. That is to the student’s advantage.
@@HomeschoolHouseCalls no I meant sorry I am recruited for possible teacher position at the company, what should I do to prepare for the online assessment they give prospective teachers??🙌🙌🙌
That’s amazing! Since I have not been a teacher for MIA, I would not know how you can best prepare. BUT, I would think it wouldn’t be too different than any other teaching position. I know from a parent perspective, I would want someone who is not only knowledgeable but also engaging & kind.
@@HomeschoolHouseCalls you awesome person, thanks for the reply🙌🙌
Did you dye your hair?
😂 You are cracking me up, dude!
😁
No one post what the curriculum looks like
I show it from the student’s side in this video. If it does cover what you want to see, I can make another video on the weekend. Mia Prep: What does the Student dash board look like? th-cam.com/video/WC7EC5q5j-8/w-d-xo.html
Thank you so much for this info! Answered a lot of my questions and I can’t wait to watch more of your helpful videos.😊
I’m so glad it was helpful!
😁
Thank you for this - it’s so hard to find reviews for the high school program from Mia!
My pleasure!!
Hello, new homeschool Mom here. I have been doing research on Mia Prep and Mia Academy for our curriculum, and I have a question. When you choose a course is that for the entire year or semester or would you have to pick multiple courses to complete the year?
It’s actually up to you. You choose the start & end date. If you wanted just a semester, only do half the courses you want to complete. Example: During the first semester, math science, elective. During the second semester, English, history, elective.
Is this for the curriculum online or the online high school version of miaprep ?
Curriculum
Is this just Mia Prep or the Mia Prep Online High School?
I don’t know how I missed this! This is just MIA Prep. Not the high school level.
This was helpful. Thank you!
I’m so glad!!
thank you!! im not a parent but im a student using miaprep and was curious what the parent portal looked like haha ^^
You are very welcome!
My oldest daughter was a twin that we lost her sister at birth. She had many developmental issues but started public kindergarten on time. At about half a year I put her and her older brother in a private Christian School and she had to go to K-4 because the regular kindergarten was already reading. When she was in second grade and two more kids later I had to put her in public school because I could no longer afford the private school. When she was in 8th grade I decided it would be best then to homeschool my daughters. That year was very challenging! But regardless she didn’t make passing grades so I kept her in 8th grade again at home. Incidentally, that year I discovered she had been one of those student the system was just passing along, so the second year I taught her how to study and learn the material. A few years later she again had to go into public school, and she graduated at 20. The school kept asking her after she was 18 if she wanted to quit, but she gad learned the importance of getting educated and wanted to graduate so they allowed her to stay that long. Now, I know this is a LONG comment, but my point is, we don’t have to keep them in a certain grade because of age. Work with each at their levels and trust God, if you believe in Him. Aimee graduated College and got a master’s degree too.
What a wonderful success story! We need this in the homeschool community! Mamas need to hear that there is hope & a future! Thank you!
Sounds like a fun day!! Wish I was local to attend.
It really was a fabulous day!
Thankyou love ♥️
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you so much 💕
You’re welcome!
Informative tutorial. Many thanks! 👍
You're welcome!
Isn't a credit 120 hours?
A Carnegie unit is 120. Most high schools will do 120 - 180 hours of instruction. Personally, I “eyeball” or guesstimate. www.homeschool.com/blog/2020/09/guide-to-giving-high-school-credits
I would love to know more about options 1 and 2 in Alabama, thanks!
Hi there, I have been watching 2 other videos of Mia Academy, and I was wondering if the dont pass the test with 80 for example, they can take it again?
Yes, it keeps cycling then through the information until they learn it. Also, you are in control of what percentage you set. It can be 80 or 75. You can also turn that feature off.
Thanks for the videos they are really helpful. I'm interested in using Mia for my 10th grader but I'm worried about math. We did Algebra 1 last year but it wasn't as in depth as I would have liked. How do they address any gaps that there may be? Can they rewatch or redo lessons? Can parents monitor them to check for problem areas?
Math is the only subject we don’t use with Mia Prep. We use Teaching Textbooks instead. Mainly because we began using it before Mia & have such success with it. I didn’t want to rock the boat.
But, you should be able to see how they do on the assessments and you can reassign material. I love how much control MIA has.
I don’t tell you enough how much I appreciate you! Thanks Deven 🥰
It’s my pleasure! Let me know what you want to know next.
This was a tremendous help! Thanks Devon
I’m so glad! Let me know what you’d like to talk about next.
What software do you use to make your yearbooks ?
I don’t believe she used a a software. They were sent to walgreen to print.
hello, how did you make a report card using Miacademy data?
I use Solution Point Learning’s report cards. MIA Prep already tally the overall grades now. So. I just moved it over into my record keeping. I’m hoping they will soon add more control over which grades you can download. Then, I will move all the assessments.
Do they keep track of report cards and records?
Yes. You can see more here. How to set up Mia Prep th-cam.com/video/ZZmhztpowG4/w-d-xo.html
@@HomeschoolHouseCalls I watched it. Is there finals/ standarized testing?
@@jjamiyo No, ma’am. You can find standardized testing at BJU. Or Let’s go learn has assessment tests that I like.
Hello Devan, Thanks for the informative videos. Do you have one that shows the videos that the Miaprep has on subjects. I just want to make sure its not too childish.
I do have one that shows it from the students side. Let me grab the link

Oh my goodness I love her curriculum!! I just almost completed our first year of our own private homeschool vidaYHWH with her curriculum we just love it..I absolutely love and appreciate her..we love doing the break videos me and my 3..I'm so excited for next year!! Praise God 🙌 we have been thru 3 different homeschool programs they absolutely did not work for us easy peasy has been the best so far 🔥🕊️🔥 it's been such a blessing
I’m so glad you enjoyed the interview & love her curriculum. She had blessed the homeschool community hugely.
Do you use MIAPREP Online High School? I am trying to find out if there are deadline or set time frames the the work for the year needs to be completed?
I do not. We use the curriculum only. I would suggest that you reach out to mia. Their customer support is superb.
I would say that I need more on the homeschool schedule. I have a basic schedule for our first week with times and plenty of breaks but I don't know how I want to schedule from there. I think I kinda want to do "must do/may do" where he will have 2 or 3 non negotiable things and 2 or 3 negotiable things with a minimum that he has to hit.
Perfect! Let’s talk about that next!
I had that with my oldest daughter and the in the homeschooling I taught her how to study and learn because the teachers put the material out there and the learning is up to her. So with the accommodations she graduated college and got a master’s degree too.
Wonderful! What a huge accomplishment for you both!
My cat looks just like that! Love this interview 😂😂😂😂
I bet she’s wonderful!
My pain point is getting my kids to help with the housework. Their rooms are soooooo messy! 🙃
Ooooff. Mine too. It’s hard. We’ll talk about that.
Does it have fun stuff and activities like mia academy?
Yes. It does.
Thank you Deven!! ❤
You are welcome! Love my mamas!❤
Can they work ahead if they want? Also does it cover writing? How long a day does it usually take your students
Yes! They can work ahead. And it does cover writing. It’s in the optional PDFs. You will need to pay attention & assign grades for it. It takes my girls around 3-4 hours.
Very nice intro. 🌻
Thanks!
This is a great resource. You've given me some great tips of items to add to my existing binder. 🌻
Awesome!
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. ❤
It’s my pleasure!
Does this curriculum auto correct assignments and tests? Looking for a high school curriculum for my son to start grade 9 next school year. Was considering Acellus Power Homeschool, but I found Mia prep and would loke to know how it compares? Are there electives to choose from? I can't really see anything on their website, so hoping to find something here on YT and I found your video. Thanks
I’m glad you found us! The daily work will autocorrect. The assessments (tests) will not.
This is the same set up as mia academy. Wish u where showing the curriculum so I could see if it's different
I have plans to make an update since we have been using it a year now. Is there a certain grade or subject you wish to see?
Just want to see what the kids see when doing the work
@@jademcgood4314 I’ll make sure to add that in.
