We are an independent bookshop located in Ashburton, Melbourne, Australia. We love books. Nothing can beat the simple pleasure of turning pages into a new world. We'd love to help you find a book!
Vikings vs Monks? Sounds like our normal family Christmas...
Katy has an absolute gem of a book here and it's very possibly just what you were needing for Christmas (for yourself of course). If you watch through to the end you will see Murphy protesting this unauthorised use of his deck. Enjoy!

This is the busiest time of the year in most bookshops, so fitting in video production requires a certain amount of juggling. That said, when we have two books that are this good, there is a certain urgency to tell you about them. Enjoy! We were exceptionally lucky to be able to snaffle a quick interview with Jock Serong last weekend. We chatted about his latest novel 'Cherrywood' and all things writing and reading. Katy has a review in the pipeline, so watch out for that, but until then she reckons it's great. Enjoy! You won't find finer writers anywhere than Donal Ryan and Niall Williams. Any *slight* bias that Katy may have for Irish authors is made totally redundant by their mastery of the language. Katy has been reading their latest offerings and you can be sure, they don't disappoint. Enjoy! The books this year keep topping any expectation for what could decently be expected in one year. Is there some imperative that has driven ALL the authors to crank out their best work in the same year? Here are two books that are part of the pattern. Enjoy! We do like to make our sales memorable, and our annual 'Have a Ball Sale' is probably our most idiosyncratic... The rules of the sale are that if you want the discount you have to provide us with a ball (it is the AFL grand final weekend after all). Anyone who didn't bring a ball to the shop was required to start drawing... Everyone was a good sport and we now have some brilliant impromptu artw...

Guess what? Our venture into sporty-themed bookselling was so popular last year that we’re doing it again over this AFL long weekend! If you bring any sort of ball to the shop you can partake in our 'Have A Ball Sale'. It’s 25% off everything in store on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. If you can't find your ball, draw one or borrow one… And yes, you read that correctly, we are open for the public...

Cherrywood is a great book. Now have the Great When to look forward to. Thanks Katie.
I hope you enjoy! :-)
Your book sounds fascinating. I intend to have as much fun as you had in writing it. I laughed at ‘historical fiction that never happened’Thanks to you both. 😊
It was a very enjoyable chat, we could have kept talking for the rest of Saturday… 😅
I loved The Great When. It was so much fun. I look forward to more of those characters and that world.
Yes! I really really hope he's writing quickly :-)
both new authors tp me, looking forward to both titles
I hope you find a new favourite!
Love both authors. Mr. Ryan’s book not available in the States until next spring. May pay the price to order from the UK.
Ah the joys of uneven publishing across the globe! I hope you're able to track down a copy before too long.
I’m currently reading Intermezzo.the language is beautiful. Thanks for two more Irish authors. I have read Donal Ryan but not Williams. I’ll look forward to further exploration. 😊
Yes, Sally Rooney just gets better and better.
I was looking for my next read, and both of these are now on order. Thank you!
That’s wonderful, I hope you enjoy them both!
Thank you 🫂🌹🫂
You are most welcome! ☺️
Delightful! Thank you.
i think ill start with his first book
thank you
You should hire out for audio books, Katy :)
Haha I shall add that to my ever growing list of things to do… 😅
I am reading this now really enjoying
thank you
i am adding all 3 to my tbr, thank you
I hope you enjoy them all! 😊
thankyou. I have subscribed!
Thank you for subscribing! 😊
Great title! Challenger Deep was that way for me❤
I enjoy your reviews and plan to read each book. Thank you!
That’s so great to hear, I hope you enjoy them!
Thank you Robbie Arnott for this wonderful insight into your novel and the writing of it.
It was marvellous talking with him! We could have talked for hours 😊
So glad to have to stumbled on your video. Yes Robbie Arnott is a wonderful author and looking forward to this book. Thanks
I hope you enjoy it!
What an odd music choice for the ending!
Certainly unexpected and well-welcomed. 😊
Would recommend The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. Best wishes.
I recommend a little known essay by Wendell Berry, poet laureate of KY , USA. The essay is' The Hidden Wound'. His family owned slaves in Northern KY close to Cincinnati OH. As a small child he heard his grandparents relate that they were "good" slave owners. But they were in denial. I am sure book banners would ban this book- if they knew about it.
I shall add it to my list of things I must read! many thanks
I love Wendell Berry. I’ll read it.
Love the ball of yarn!
There were so many great drawings, we had fun that weekend.

I had never heard of this author, thank you! I will definitely read Dusk. Cheers from Sweden!
Hello Sweden all the way from Melbourne Australia! Dusk is a gem, I hope you can find a copy okay. We will be interviewing the author, Robbie Arnott this week and will put up a video shortly afterward.
You completely and utterly sold me on this book sounds like a pure delight even though I just have so many books to read I think I’ll read it next Delighted to hear you’re an Irish woman as I am although I assumed you were English
You can NEVER have too many books waiting to be read (you can trust me I'm a bookseller...). It's always nice to bump into fellow Irish, I have travelled around quite a lot and my accent gets stronger when I'm home. :-)
@@TheLeafBookshop Very true but I’m a slow reader but getting through as many as possible Such a delight owning a book shop, hope it’s doing well as there doesn’t seem to be as many people reading books 📚
Bookselling today certainly has its challenges, but is still very rewarding even if the accountant doesn't quite agree... Finding just the right book for a customer always brings a smile, especially when they come back in and tell me I got it right. And meeting authors, that's very special. Robbie Arnott is coming in this week for an interview, very much looking forward to that!
@@TheLeafBookshop Yes, it’s the gratification and enjoyment you get from work that’s more important My husband’s and I worked for years as market gardeners and we sold our produce in the marketplace…. Just loved it 😍
Your reviews are simply inspiring. 😊
Glad you like them!
hmmmmmm... sounds intriguing
I just came across this channel. Love your reviews and see books I don't normally see.
I’m glad you’re enjoying our reviews. We have a whole swag of author interviews too 😊
I just finished this novel. Great book, great review!
Glad you enjoyed it! ❤️
ooh I love that you say he's getting even better! Can't wait to read!
It’s a fabulous read, you’ve a treat in store 😊
I just finished Enlightenment and was so moved by it that it's difficult to contemplate how I can even pick up another book. It masterful. Far exceeded Melmoth and Essex Serpent in my opinion. Can't stop thinking about the characters and the profound questions and insights it delivered. Wow. 😮😮😮
It’s the best thing when you come across one of ‘those’ books that stops you in your tracks. 😊
Thank you for posting this! We discussed the short story The White Line in class, and this was very helpful for wording some of my thoughts about it. A few years late, but I'll try to pick up Other Houses sometime!
Glad to be of service 😅
Like your channel very thoughful.
Thank you so much 😊
Enjoyed
Thank you! ☺️
Ah, so exciting to discover you. I am an Australian poet, critic & literary essayist. I have also just started a BookTube channel. I live in a tiny home with the love of my life, an ex-racer, rescue greyhound named Billy-Blue. I feel so lucky. I love novellas, but read mainly poetry (especially contemporary), fantasy, magic realism & Gothic. Do you also sell books online?
Sorry for the slow reply! Good luck with your BookTube channel 😊 and yes indeed we sell books through our website online leafbookshop.com.au
Im so happy i found this, i finished stolen and loved it. I was disappointed that was the ending of the reading it. I CANT WAIT TO READ THE SECOND ONE!
Yes! Can't wait! ☺️
Go Murphy! ❤
Thank you, Katy! Intrigued by the Canadian - Irish blend with Colin Barrett. Sounds like a powerful debut. The title is feisty and it sounds like the characters are that too. I have been searching out short stories, Kate Kennedy and similar, but also more widely, so will look out for Barrett. 📚💐
Very few debuts are as good as this. Maybe it’s his short story heritage that has helped? 😊
You got me with the 'humour'. That within such bleak conditions it is also funny is very interesting. I have put it on my wishlist.
It is a very rare blend indeed, I hope you enjoy it when you get to it. ❤️
Just finished the first Caleb book. Wow! Emotions, twists and turns, brilliant humor and a fantastic portrayal of what d/D people experience. As a retired ASL interpreter I truly appreciate your deep research. Really looking forward to more, more, more!
Brilliant! You now have three more to read 😊
Intrigued and motivated to find this book. Eloquent and erudite and thoughtful are my expectations of Caoilinn Hughes after watching you. I find your reviews and recommendations helpful and absorbing and smile when your videos arrive. "Stop the lights!" Thank you.💐
Thank you for saying that, I’m so glad you enjoy my reviews 😊❤️
That is heartening news😊
So interested to read this book. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be available here in India, at least not on Amazon, which is where I get most of my books from.
I’m sorry about that. It’s only just been published here in Australia, so with any luck it’ll be available further afield soon. 🙏
Thank you very much for these suggestions, having been raised Catholic and Irish the miraculous medal brings feelings both positive and negative but mostly the latter so I think I’ll purchase it 👍🏻
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did ❤️
I’m in. Sounds fantastic. What would be the best way for me in Tasmania to purchase a copy? 👌🏻😊
I can see that Fullers in Hobart don’t have it at the moment, but will get more when the publisher finishes reprinting (which should be soon). We have two copies today, but probably better to order locally so you don’t have to pay postage. ❤️😊
A few chapters in and adoring this / can’t for the life of me find any interviews or podcasts to listen to with her about this book!
If only she would come to Australia and then maybe I could interview her 🤞😅
Great interview, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Really enjoy your channel and the raw authenticity of it. Thank you for sharing all the experience and keeping the channel for all of us real. All the best to you :)
Thanks Matthew! That’s nice of you to say 😊
