15 MinuteModeller

เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 1 เม.ย. 2018
Making model railways 15 minutes at a time. Beating procrastination, building layouts.
With projects such as kit building, scenery projects, layout building, soldering & new technologies I hope to show you what you could do with just 15 minutes of railway modelling time.
Welcome to the 15minutemodeller channel. As a long time un-railway modeller I wanted to turn that around and actually make things. I plan to learn new skills and build up a channel that you can take something from and incorporate into your layout or try-out in your railway modelling.
Thanks for watching.

From Pencil to Plywood
A look at my processor Layout Design.
In todays video I walk you through the process of how I design a new layout. From Idea to Cutting List for baseboard materials. I use a mixture of modern and traditional ideas and blend them into a final piece of paper that is the plan. In the next layout build video I will be showing you the construction of the plywood baseboard.

The 2mm Scale Association Diamond Jubilee Show Last weekend I went to my first Railway Modelling Show since 2020. It’s been a long time! I really enjoyed myself and the inspiration and communication I took away was priceless. Many of the big layouts I had seen before but they were always behind barriers and just out of view for really good look at the modelling. I particularly enjoyed the chall...

Scratch Building Model Railway Yard Office in 4mm - Final Build #03 In todays video I am continuing on with the the roof and chimney. I made a shorter video for this one. I have shown in previous ones what I did and didn't want to repeat content. The chimney turned out really well. But the roof tiles where a bit sketchy as I didn't measure the space for them. But you live and learn. Until the n...

Scratch Building Model Railway Yard Office in 4mm - Final Build #02 In todays video I am continuing on with the basic build. Cutting out chimney and roof parts. I had a bit of a FUBAR with the footage for video. It got mangled in the transferring around I need to do in order to get it to the edit stage. But I managed to save enough to get the vid out. The chimney is not ready to brick paper and...

MODEL RAILWAY TOOLS | Build A Glue Holder cheaply out of card

Short video of making a model railway glue holder cheaply out of card. It’s been a while and to get my mojo going again I have built a Glue Holder for the Slaters liquid glue I brought the other day with some plastic wagon kits. As you can see it’s a really simple build but enough of a base to stop it being knocked over and spilt. One day I would like to make this from wood but till that time I...

I have enjoyed your video and it really helps me with my recovery from my brain tumour and stroke as I try to get back to my modelling I mention my illness so you know who is watching and why thank you 😂
Thank you so much for recording this for those of us who couldn’t make it!
A walk ??
Hi thanks for that I’m just putting together a TT120 layout. Approximately 11x5 foot it’s made out of 12mm MDF board. But. I Am thinking of sticking 10mm Eva foam board on top. Will this also deaden the sound. Is it rigid enough? What do you think? Cheers!
Have you tried Ultra Glue from D M Toys and Modellbahn Union. This is a superb glue and I find a little of this glue goes a very long way. I use a cocktail stick for placing glue on small items. I have just received my first bottle of Rocket Card glue from a retailer that has come without a top or the advertised fine dispensing tube, so I have not used it yet. Thanks for the video which I found very interesting and useful.
I see no walking
We all learn by our, mistakes. Makes us get better
Great video there mate, nicely filmed. Funnily enough I am the builder, owner and exhibitor of Finlarig Halt which is in this video! Pretty cool to see it randomly pop into my TH-cam recommended. :)
Thx for watching. It was a great show an love a good boxfile layout! 😊
Really enjoyed that, thanks!
Thx for watching, glad you enjoyed it.
With the rocket card glue use a jam jar with a damp tissue in the bottom and put the glue in upside down. I have had one jar for seven days and it hasn’t blocked.
Ok thx, I’ll give it a try. It’s the one thing that frustrates me..
Wot sort of card are u using and where do u get it from .....im just started out in scratch building
Hi Tony, the main structures use 3mm mount card. This is used in picture framing and can be brought at local art supplies shops or eBay is a good place to look. I got mine free from family. All other card is cereal or food packaging card, that comes free! :) Here is a link to hobby craft to give you an idea www.hobbycraft.co.uk/decor-and-frames/frame-mounting/mount-board-and-card
Some very shiny engines there!
Nice ones too, for dirty diesels 😉
I've Been There, Nice Service
Yes must go soon! As need supplies.
Nice update today
Thx a lot. I was lucky to be able to salvage it.
Very nice kit.....well designed
Thx for the comment. It is, Metcalfe do a great job with all there kits.
Hi There a great set of videos, thats a very nice little building also it cost very little. Well done and look forward to more on your channel.
Thx a lot and glad you enjoy them. Trying to use what I have.
AWESOME!!! Keep up the good work .Hope there more to come.
Thx a lot, yes hopefully the trains got going again 😉
I didn't realise Metcalfe did a bank building, nice
Hi Fred. Yes it’s a nice kit that went together nicely.
Nice work. If you want lightweight but strong? Pink or Blue insulation foam, edged with thin ply or hardboard and under/cross braced with thin ply? There's also Foamlux - a plastic version of foamcore, weatherproof too, but it's pricey.
I didn’t know about Foamlux. I used this as I had a load from something else and wanted to try it out. Strength is not it’s strong point.. I want to try out pink foam an ply at some point too.. Thx for comment.
@@15MinuteModeller Thank you, understood, it's good to experiment and everyday is a school day for me. Please keep the excellent videos coming. I had hoped that Foamlux would - relatively speaking - come down in price over the years but it hasn't. I make do with off cuts from friends in the trade. I've a 'micro' layout on pink foam, on a light frame, it's coped well with exhibition use and garage storage. It's also a good medium to lay onto solid boards for scenery too and doesn't seem to attack/eat wiring insulation as expanded polystyrene does.
@@musoseven8218 Thanks a lot for watching my videos 😀 Strangely I was down at my local Building supplies depot the other day and saw they had a big selection of the pink foam in pretty thick dimensions but forgot to ask them how much it was. I’ve seen it used to lot by American layout builders and always been curious about the rigidity of it. Glad to know you’ve had good experiences with it and I’m definitely going to try it out for a future project I have in mind. Thanks for following along and hopefully they’ll be something out this weekend.
@@15MinuteModeller Give it a go! It has it's limitations, but it is a good alternative. Looking forward to your next video.
Nice little tutorial. Many thanks!
Glad you liked it.
I have exactly the same problem with the air bubbles in the Rocket card glue, such that I have reverted to the PVA.
It’s frustrating as I really like the quickness off the bond but the application is an annoyance. I did get some of the fine tips and been told that helps.. but..
@@15MinuteModeller The Rocket glue gives you no time to adjust, whereas with the PVA you do have a few seconds, no more, to correct things.
That’s true. If I can find the tips I’ll give them a go.. I know if I buy more they’ll turn up.. but see a return to pva
Coming along nicely there, personally I like the "To The Trains" sign in the background.. but thats personal preference! :-)
Thx for comment, and a “To The Trains” sign is not just for Christmas! 😀
Looking forward to the roof going on.
Thx, yes this one will be right after your advice..
I’m looking at making a return to card modelling, the reason I’m here. I got a little fed up of painting plastic models, as the paint prices can be quite expensive, more so when the paint doesn’t seem to have a long shelf life anymore. The last card model I built was a Manor House out of the Downesplans book, around 25 years ago, every brick and tile on individually.. I don’t think I have that patience anymore, as I’v gotten a little grumpy with age. One thing I have tried with brick paper, is running it through my wife’s Sixxix Big shot machine using a Wills plastic brick sheet as an emboss, just to give the brick paper some texture. Btw, thanks for the scale model scenery link, I’v ordered some brick paper from them to try, and all I need is another Downesplans book for the Manor House again, as I let my others go around 15 years ago, due to a house move.
A great way to do your recycling : )
Beats having to get up really early to beat bin men! 😀
A quick tip on folding card. Make your score then fold against a straight edge to help prevent bending a keep the fold straight. I'm enjoying the series, keep it up.
Thx a lot and good tip. I’ll try on next one.
You can see more of the build in this playlist th-cam.com/play/PLIfOrVNwfe17e-Tw1kzbiZRQWBtJX6TBx.html
I take it thats 'n' gauge? or are you still experimenting with "Peruvian inverse z gauge!" or some other whacky scale?
No in fact it’s 00 so playing with the big boys.. oh and Peruvian is so last year! 😉
@@15MinuteModeller ah of course - the ebb and flow of the rivet counting fashionistas - I cant keep up with the young 'uns anymore ;-)
Get orf my lawn!!! 😉
Hi there, i am a member of the EBOR group of railway modellers and monk bar model shop. I would Like to ask for permission to share this to our EBOR group facebook page. Regards Mike
Hi Mike, yes I don’t mind as long as this channel is reference in FB post. Really enjoy the show and hope it’s back next year. Regards Tom
Keep it up! I like your editing style.
Thx a lot.
Hi, what thickness is the foam board? I assume its available in different thicknesses and relatively cheap to buy?
This is 3mm Foam Board but you can get it thicker. I would use the black type but was using what I had around.
I enjoyed seeing the update. I also enjoy working in foamcore - it’s so easy to shape and combined with hot melt glue joints I find it very easy to think in or translate a sketch into a finished form. The biggest problems I’ve had both relate as you commented: the light weight of the board. -the resulting light weight actually made typical shunting moves strange as it was so easy to nudge the layout accidentally; -mounting items like turnout mechanisms is trickier as the soft foam doesn’t readily hold like plywood; Looking forward to updates.
Thx Chris, I’m on the start of my fun journey into shelf layouts but using this as a test bed for further layouts.. I really enjoyed seeing yours grow. Have you had time to model? Thx for following along.
I’m currently building my first one too. Subbed, good luck ☺️
Thx Steve, yes exciting times! 😃 good luck with yours.
The train is really cool, thanks for sharing my fellow train brethren - TinyTrainTrack
Thx, and your welcome

Thx a lot, it’s been some time coming 😀

Much appreciated. More coming soon 😀

Hello, saw you at the tripod video Brian put out. New sub. I like watching all the trains and how you might set them up! 😀
Thx for following along.. and the setting up is the fun part! 🙂
Coming along there though little progress - its progress none the less, what sort of lighting / power setup are you envisioning?
Thx, well if you knew how long it’s taken me to get to this point.. lights n stuff will be revealed in later video.
Good start there, hopefully it will give you some good storage and I presume layout space?
Thx, yes that’s the plan. I even have a cup shelf below.. layout shelf
It's great that you're taking your time and doing it well. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress. --dunc
My friends might say I’m taking too long! 😀 Thx for stopping by
Some cracking layouts there, takes me back to being a kid again when realism started to take off, but some of these go to another level
Yes a bit different to the oval of track on front room floor. With some careful close up pics sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference.
Some masterpieces on show there, thanks for sharing
Thx, yes there were some real nice layouts. I’m going to return to get a better look.
Very nice video 👍
Thx a lot
