Parahamuti – Restoring Wetlands Through Collaboration
In collaboration with Ngā Hapū o Ōtaki, Kāpiti Coast District Council, and Fonterra, we are working with Shane and Eileen Walker to restore Parahamuti, a wetland on a retired section of their farm. The Walkers share how this partnership is helping turn their vision into reality, transforming Parahamuti back into a thriving ecosystem that supports mahinga kai and native species. We’re upgrading the Mills Street stopbank. It will be approximately 1.5 metres higher and will allow more water to pass safely during floods. This phase of work will be completed in October. In 2023 we planted almost 1 million trees. We protect our vulnerable native species by controlling pests in 50,000 hectares at 57 key sites across the region.
