Verkleinwoorde | How to pronounce diminutives in Afrikaans and their rules
In this video we are going to introduce you to diminutives or "verkleinwoorde" in Afrikaans. Because there are quite a few rules, they can feel overwhelming, confusing and hard to remember.
But don't worry. We are going to introduce each diminutive individually and show you the pronunciation of each and get that right first. Only then will we introduce the rules for each of the diminutives in a structured way, because when things are presented logically and in a structured way, the brain will recognize it as a pattern and that will also make it easier to remember.
So what is a diminutive or "verkleinwoord" in Afrikaans? If you take a word like "hond", we typically say "Dit is 'n hond.". If we now make that word small it becomes "hondjie". Notice the ending with "ie". So we say "Dit is 'n klein hondjie." The word "klein" or also our clue that the word has been made small or put into the diminutive form.
So how do we actually make a word smaller? We do it by adding some letters to the end of the word. In Afrikaans it will always be at the end of the word. The first one is "ie", which is the basic form that will be expanded on with more letters to make up the other longer diminutive forms.
We will also look at how to change the diminutives into the plural form and what to do if a word is already in its plural form, but not yet in it's diminutive form.
Lastly we will look at a few words for which none of the rules apply and which we need to treat as exceptions.

0:17 Use STOMPI it’s Subject (for example that cat) Tense (future, past, present whatever) Object (that stoplight) Manner (forgot) Place (Cape town, Johannesburg, really whatever) And Infinity (most of the time infinity is scrapped, but whenever anything after OM comes is basically infinity) And then you get the two verbs. Verb 1 goes after subject, Verb 2 after place. So the full one will be: SV1TOMPV2I
Good video
Thank you very much!
Thank you very much.
Dankie!
Plesier!
A very interesting and well explained video. Baie dankie❤
Thank you. We appreciate your feedback.
Neatly done, but what about the ij / y ? I guess it sounds like the 'ei', but I’m not sure if it that’s always true, or if it’s slightly different-sounding. Could you help me with that?
When 'y' forms a two vowel sound joined in one syllable to form one speech sound, such as 'ay' in day, it is a diftong. The 'y' in Afrikaans is pronounced as 'ay', therefore not a vowel standing on its own. 'ij' is not written in Afrikaans, but in Dutch only.
@@YourAfrikaansChannel So does the 'y' in Afrikaans sound the same as the 'ei' ? If yes, I can listen to the 'ei' pronunciation in the video and try to copy that, also for the 'y'.

Hi, ek wil net baie dankie sê vir jou video's. Jy is ongelooflik behulpsaam en het my Afrikaans geweldig verbeter. Julle het 'n fantastiese sin vir humor wat my in amper elke video laat lag. Ek geniet dit baie om na julle te kyk en van julle inhoud te leer. Ek kon nooit verstaan hoe Afrikaanse meervoude en sinsbou werk nie, maar jy het my so baie gehelp. Hou aan met die fantastiese werk. Weereens baie dankie
Baie dankie!

Can you translate "hy is hoog in dié takke" to Engels
The literal translation is "He is high in the branches", but "three sheets in the wind" is the English equivalent of the Afrikaans idiom to describe a very drunk person. Hope this helps.
