My son is in welding school. He says his instructor Manny keeps crying about how much he could be making in the pipeline instead of being an instructor.
Why 3 times? I have a 12 inch branch test coming up and videos I’ve been watching you fold it 4 times.. what is the reasoning to fold it different amount of times?
Works, but I feel youd have been better off making a leveled jig instead of grinding the coating off. As I recall in classes they said grinding on a pipeline is heavily regulated so I hope it all is up to code...
If you weld together a piece that fits under two feet on the same side and have that jig be square then you can take a bubble level and get it perfectly square without grinding anything Be a hero not a zero bub
Because a square and a bubble level could never get it done 🤦🏼♂️ I mean a laser level could never do it either 🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️ Grinding away material on a pipe that doesn’t have a round outer diameter is like trying to shoot a .308 through the eye of a needle You may hit your target but it doesn’t mean you actually did it
@ Homie You’re a welder?!? I put together a jig my 2nd week out Bubble level and it’s square every time You give the profession a bad name with your lack of knowledge and experience You stick stuff together you don’t fabricate a damn thing and it’s embarrassing
I had an inspector before telling me he wanted the whole thing buffed… I normally leave the lines from the torch but I will buff the area around the weld
In the degree from experience you get experience in tig mig qualifications stick operations on CNC plasma cutting blue print reading fabrication and tools to fix the machines of welding help.
What he is (I'm sure) trying to suggest you do for testing is as follows; * they won't let you turn in the most hideous torch cuts because (bend or break) they can't see the crack lines * Don't volunteer to polish clean your coupons in order to easily see (bend or break) the crack lines * Definitely keep them as carbon scaled and jagged edges they will let you get away with because it's a way to try to hide the stress fractures from visual inspect (after bend), so your inferior welds may actually pass. You take advice from him and cheat so you can be the one who drive 1,200 miles to bust a test, drive another 729 miles to bust the next one. Not good luck but, GOOD LEARNING!😊
Me and my buddies will never forget this. I took my welds up for a grade. And I got a pretty decent score. I let my buddy take my welds up for his score. And believe it or not his score was higher. Imagine that shit 🤣😂😂😂 I didn't give a damn I still passed 💚👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
They have to grade off of experience, your friend had less experience so him turning in your welds was a huge accomplishment for him so he got a higher grade knowing he will never score that high again
@FkUToob1776 right on that was back when we were in high school and they still had metal shop.. I don't think that school has that class anymore. I think they need to bring those classes back.
Technically, you're not "wrong". Although used interchangeably, Dross is usually impurities from molten metal like what i used to skim from the pool of Aluminum in the remelt furnace I ran in a die casting facility, or the solder pot when I was in circuit board repair. While a welder fabricator anytime we cut metal whether with flame or arc, the byproducts were referred to as SLAG.
same shit different name dumbo. On a technical level, Dross is the impurities you remove from the top of a crucible full of molten metal. Slag is melted metal that is useless.
You can have up to 1/8” of bead above the surface of the material and that code baby. Absolutely no need to ever grind your weld unless you want to make it weaker lmao.
I was welding Railroad maintenance of way products and was required to qualify AWS D1.1 which pretty much states I can weld heavy structural, Bridges etc. 1 inch groove weld test coupon.. sooooooooo

Needs no passes. And turn that machine up a good 10-15
Wouldnt that be 45 degree fittings if your cutting them in half?

Right
Grind the weld
Bend the root and do a nick break on another
If its just a bend test you need to round those edges. If its a break test then it doesnt matter.

Should grind face & root flush to the thickness of the steel

@ian3967 all of canada grinds their cwb tests for basic positions before bending
my teacher makes me clean up some welds so he can see it better but that is high school not collage
If it holds it dont matter
