Hear to Learn
A parent initiated, Lincoln Public Schools' pilot program to increase student learning by improving the classroom listening environment.
Students miss 30% of what is said in the classroom simply because they cannot hear it. Due to immature listening and language systems, children have no ability to "fill in the blanks" so missed information is simply a lost learning opportunity.
Hear to Learn responds to problems associated with classroom noise and children's fluctuating hearing. Children need a signal (the teacher's voice) to be 15 decibels above background noise to clearly understand instruction. Sadly, in the typical American classroom, the teacher's voice rises only four decibels above background noise.
Kids with typical hearing struggle to hear instruction, as do those with other complicating factors such as learning English as a second language, hearing loss, poverty, learning disabilities, sensory issues, attention deficit disorders, and other special needs.
Hear to Learn seeks to install 100 classroom amplification systems in four K-5 LPS elementary schools (West Lincoln, Prescott, Sheridan and Kloefkorn).
These systems consist of a main speaker with a microphone for the teacher and another for students. The systems project sound evenly across classrooms, making every desk a good place for all students to hear and learn.
We believe the Hear to Learn project's benefits will include higher test scores in reading and math, fewer disruptive classroom behavior issues, decreased special education referrals, and fewer teacher absences for reasons of vocal strain.
